View Full Version : Checking in with school . .. .
livinginchaos 09-27-05, 11:52 PM Hey all!
I'm just wondering how school is going for everyone! I know school can be particularly difficult for an ADDer, especially those with a blocks schedule!
Do you have any particular classes you're really enjoying?
Any teachers that are great and work well with you?
What about classes that are difficult? What are you doing to help it go better for you?
What do you think teachers could do to help you, an ADD student, better?
I'm taking a class and it's going well!
My professor is very "user friendly." He assigns us readings each week and the topics overlap each other, this way we get the same information in a few different readings, fed to us in different ways (to increase comprehension).
But, his tests! Whew!! They are difficult to say the least.
So, I study a lot. I study for 30 - 45 minutes, then take a 15 minute break. Or I'll tell myself - if I get through this chapter, I get to watch a TV show I've been wanting to see.
I'm so angry at the counselor!! Yesterday some guest speakers cmae into
one of my classes and talked about people with disabilities. They talked about ADD,
but of course i want there because the counselor wanted to "See how
i was doing" So im still angry and i'm going to kill her
Gil, can you catch me up on why this woman aggravates you so badly? Are there a lot of people on your case about one thing and another? Adults can forget what it's like to grow. I don't remember those times with any fondness. I hated school and all it brought.
Rage against the machine was how I'd sum up my time there. I still carry a fair bit of hostility to the complacent throng.
Those are pretty strong words you offered.
I've had to do lots of killing. The biggest thing I've killed is a deer several years ago now. But I almost had to kill a horse last year at this time. I've killed many dogs, countless chickens, cats, skunks, and mice of course. It's got to the point now that when someone says they want to kill something I cringe.
The last time I had to shoot a dog I swore I was going to stop killing things, but it's just no practical with the lifestyle I've chosen. A dog full of porcupine quills is sometimes a dog too far gone and in need of release. The more times I've killed something the more sensitive I've become to the responsibility of it.
My Mum has asked me to pull the plug on her when the time comes. She's gone so far as to set it all out in a legal document called "a living will." I'm not sure how I'll feel about that one when the time comes. My Mum and I have been through some very close times. We share a lot of common ground in how we look at the world. She's my touch stone.
I'm really sorry to hear of your intense frustration. It reminds me too much of my experiences in school. I had a dysfunctional family to say the least and throughout school I was always trying to seek answers to some of the things I didn't think I could stand anymore.
It turns out that those feelings don't go away entirely, but like death, I have to accept the things I can't change and change the things I can and then with a little luck, I'll be able to tell the difference. Changing things has always been easier than accepting that I can't change some others.
Peace. Ian.
Gourmet 09-28-05, 06:55 PM Hi Gil. If you return to this thread, I am interested in knowing if your counselor or teacher made an example of you in class. Did she embarrass you in class? I wasn't clear from your post if this was the case.
If this is the case, I'd like to contribute more to your thread.
I have two sons with ADD in school and would like to know how this was handled if you don't mind.
It's a great thing to be able to vent. I worry about the word "kill" and ask my boys to choose other words, but I perfectly understand your frustration.
Thanks guy.
~gourmet~
She did not embarras me, its just that these guest speakers came in to talk about
people with dissorders and one of the ones they talked about was ADD. I wanted to
hear what they said about ADD and the counselor had to take me out of class
when they did talk about it. thats why im so darn mad
Ah, now it makes sense to me. I get it. Thanks for the nod.
Was there no reasoning with her? She might have benefited from the speaker too. Sheesh... too bad you missed it.
Could you get the persons name and follow it up with a contact to maybe get an overview of what was presented? Or maybe check to see where the speaker is next engaged and check it out then.
Ian
livinginchaos 09-28-05, 11:36 PM That really stinks, Gil. I'd be upset about it also. Thanks for sharing.
A lot of schools tape guest speakers - you should ask about that; if they did maybe you can borrow the tape to watch it. Ian had some good ideas also.
Tell us more about school, Gil!
Do you have any cool teachers? Are any classes pretty easy for you? Any interesting stuff you've learned?
Geez, school is the best ever! :D
I am having a blast in 9th grade, although it does have exams and tests overload :P But, hey, it's a challenge. And I accept :D
My favorite classes are still gym (today in football, I scored a touchdown. Yay me!) and english. Writing and running rocks!
My favorite teacher is my organizational skills teacher, since without her, my locker and backpack would be in such a mess :p Plus, she's very nice, so that rocks.
I still hate math. I'm stuck with my loon teacher from seventh grade  Atleast I have my friend sitting in front of me, so I'm not lonely; yay!
So I definitly can't complain; school rocks, my friends rock, my teachers rock; it's like one big jam session!
Crybaby1898 09-29-05, 07:46 PM hey i just graduated and i miss school
Nucking_Futs 09-29-05, 10:15 PM I love Anatomy and Physciology though the class itself is hard. We have an exam every week over an entire chapter. This week its DNA sequencing which is really interesting and my professor has a way of breaking the harsh chapters into understandable material if your not too lazy to take notes. I've already signed up to take her Anatomy and Physiology II class next semester I'm not one to mess with a system that works well for me.
Algebra is another story all together...I won't be taking anymore Individualized self paces courses again. I seem to have an issue with making myself work when I'm not held accountable. *cringes*
Bedders 09-30-05, 04:33 AM i've been exclued
b-baller#15 10-01-05, 04:16 PM I hate school this year. i have the same teacher 1st and 2nd block. its hard enough sitting through 1 block then i have to sit through 2 in the exact same room.
i have a D in spanish and its almost an F. I cant pass english let alone spanish. i have no idea how im gonna pass that class. then i have a D in science and that is my best subject normally and im doing bad in there.
i had a detention on the first day of school too. way to start out the new school year!
I was doing surprisingly good for the first month and a half of school but I finally slipped this week. I got a 40% on a AP History test. I was doing good for the first 30 minutes of it but then I spent like 30 minutes playing with my pen while repeating the question in my head. I kept telling myself ANSWER THE FREAKING QUESTION but myself just found something new to do with the pen. I finally broke out of it with 10 minutes left and had to rush the second half of the test into that tiny amount of time. Then later in the week I decided to sleep rather than do my Annotated Bibliography, and overslept and missed a Biology quiz in the morning. But it's still better than last year.
RandomHysterics 10-18-05, 04:31 PM Some classes I really like right now are my Advanced drawing and painting class, my 3D Studio class, and my Honors Zoology class. I love art and the zoology is so interesting! A class that is difficult is my Calculus class. I'm doing my very very best and wokring as hard as I can to do well in there. Come to think of it, I have a quiz in Calculus tomorrow. Hopefully I'll do reallly well on that! Oh and I love Latin too! I'm in my third year of Latin right now, and next year I'll hopefully do AP Latin IV **crosses fingers and grins**
Bye everyone talk to you later!
RandomHysterics 10-18-05, 04:33 PM Oh Binro, that's happened to me before! It's so terrible, I'm sorry that it happened! :( I'm sure next time you'll do reallllly awesome on your AP history test!!! :)
CharlieM 10-22-05, 07:32 PM School has been alright for me. The days are pretty easy, along with the tests. I still can't get my darned homework in though!! I am doing MUCH better than last year, but just about anything can be considered better than how I performed last year....
As of now I am undiagnosed, but byr ealizing my faults I feel I have certainly taken a step in the right direction!
Binro:
That has happened to me more times than I can count! The worst is when you are on a tough question and you space out and start thinking about random things going on in your life. I'm glad you were able to break out of it, but sorry that you had to do all that in 10 minutes! Certainly better than not getting around to it at all, though...
As for over-sleeping/sleeping instead of doing homework: all I can say is STORY OF MY LIFE. I usually procrastinate to no end, and once I am ready to start my homework, I am too tired and instead decide to go to bed thinking "Sleep is very important! Can they really expect me to be doing my homework this late instead of getting a full nights sleep like I need?" I've also been grounded quite a few times for oversleeping and causing other people to be late!
Hopefully you'll do outstanding on your next test!
