View Full Version : anything good about strattera?
I am on my second day of Strattera. I am very sleepy, :faint: tingling on my scalp and feel like I have the flu. No appetite also. The thought of food makes me want to barf.
All in all, does anyone have anything good to say about Strattera? After the customary time, does it work? Has anyone had any good effects of this?
Donna
irish guy 10-03-05, 12:37 PM It works very well for me.
Are you taking it with food? If i take it on an empty stomach I get the same side effects you describe.
Hi,
Yes, I take it with breakfast...although I don't feel like eating too much, I force myself to eat. My dr. told me to take it with breakfast.
How long have you been taking Strattera now? And how do you feel, how is it working for you, are you able to focus and concentrate more or better??

What dosing are you taking? How long till to move up to the next dose?
Hi TIm,
I am on my second day, and as the day goes on, I feel worse. I am on 25mg Strattera, and 50 mg of Zoloft.
I first took Strattera and Zoloft together a week ago Friday. The effects were worse then. So I talked to my doc and I realized while talking to him, that if I don't take it, I'll never get better. So I started again yesterday. In a week I double the Strattera to 50mg. Then the following week to 60.
I just want some hope and advice that this will work for me and that I'll get better soon...I've just read some negative comments online about Strattera...a few were positive, but I just would like some uplifting news at this point I guess.
By the way, I also had the same report on my card in school, about talking, but I was in the second grade. Also that I was a "great daydreamer", and wasn't "paying attention". "If she could just apply herself, she would have great potential"....My biggest downfall was math, and still is!!
Thanks for getting back, looking forward to more....

Wow! That's a lot for your body to adjust to. I am sure the doctor knows what he is doing. 25mg is a better starting dose than the typical 40mg that most doctors prescribe.
Maybe you could talk to your doctor about just starting one medication. Maybe the Zoloft would be good to start with, since you may be experiencing anxiety/depression. Once you get to your target dose, the Strattera will take about 4 weeks to exibit positive results (this is typical). You will have good and bad days, so don't get freaked that the medicine not working.
The negative comments are usually related to the side effects of starting Strattera too high and not giving your body time to adjust.
Give it a try. Good luck and keep us posted.
Thank you, you have already made me feel better. As the day went on today, I felt worse and worse, til I ate dinner, and went out for a little walk.
I did start with the Zoloft a week ahead of the Strattera, but started a little side-effects with that, too, like a dull headache, but nothing compared to this with Strattera.
As they say, no pain, no gain. I have read on the Strattera web site that the dosage is usually determined by the patient's weight, although my doc didn't ask me how much I weigh.
Tomorrow is another day, day 3. Thanks for being there, I'll keep you posted!

SnappyCloud 10-03-05, 10:18 PM I tried Strattera for about ten days. Two real good things: no appetite and no desire to smoke.
a(dd)ndy 10-04-05, 12:31 AM MyMind,
I have definitely heard from others who it has worked for. It has not worked for me and I am already switching to Adderall (picking up rx tomorrow). It may have definitely worked had I been able to stick it out as I did NOT give it a good enough chance. But the side effects were horrible for me and just getting worse. I had the loss of appetite, dry mouth, upset stomache, dizziness and tiredness/fatigue. I also had the tingly scalp and this was the only side effect I liked. :) I actually would get tingly throughout my whole body at times. When I was driving on the highway listening to the radio, "I will survive" by Aretha Franklin (spelling?) came on and I'm telling you my whole body felt like I had ants under my skin (in a good way) for the whole song while I constantly drummed to it, it was the funniest thing. Anyway, I had the horrible effects on Thursday and called my doctor. He had started me with 60mg and told me to up it to 80mg in 1 week. I told him about my side effects and he said to take it every other day until you get used to it. I tried it on Saturday and again today but it got even worse. I got absolutely nothing done at work (way worse than without it). So I called him back and he is writing me an rx for Adderall tomorrow. I wish I could have given it a chance but with the side effects and the fact that it would have cost me $45 per month as opposed to the $10 per month for generic Adderall (plus I hear the tired feeling lots of times won't go away), I've decided to switch already. Good luck to you and let us know if you stick with it, how it turns out.
Sorry to hear all you went through, what an ordeal. Today was Day 3. Not nearly as bad as yesterday, but still had the ants under my skin for awhile. Starting to get tired now, as I ran around the house all day painting stuff and fixing things non-stop, loving every minute of the energy. We'll see what tomorrow brings. After all, on Monday I couldn't get off the couch, today I can't sit still.
Fencewatcher 10-07-05, 11:07 PM Today is day two for me & I've noticed nothing yet...
but I'm only taking the 18mg tablets. I'll take the 25mgs after a week of the 18s.
hi again everyone. Well today is my double dose day, on to 50mg. So far I just feel the tingling and goosebumps. This past week was strange in that it seemed every other day was a bad one. The good days I felt great. But it was just odd that it was every other day, really, Monday, Wednesday and Friday were not so good.
BananaSlip 10-23-05, 08:47 PM Well, after reading everyone's comments, it's clear that Strattera is not for everyone. However, I've been on it for two years now, and it has worked wonders for me. Going through the bootcamp of side effects was worth it.
I realize this every time I take a break from it. I went through a couple of weeks without it this past summer due to changes in insurance, and I felt that old fog creeping back in. I felt as if I was feeling around in the dark for the light switch, but I couldn't find it. Very frustrating. The tasks that previously took me a couple of hours to do would take me days, and with errors ridden throughout. I was amazed at the effort it took to compose, read, and edit letters. I lost the ability to visually isolate cells on Excel databases, even with the use of both fingers. I had to use a ruler and the edge of a piece of paper to read the charts and find specific cells. After getting back on the med, I found the "light switch" and my ability to focus sharpened again.
Although Straterra does not solve all of my problems, it makes me more aware of my problems and remember to take care of them. So, try to stick with it for a couple of months, and you will see if it works for you. Good luck!
I also noticed my number reversing and careless mistakes came back when I went off Strattera for awhile. Now that I am taking it again, I notice those things are not present and I don't have to second guess myself.
netsavy006 10-24-05, 09:27 AM I am just starting Stratterra 18mg. This is my 3rd day on it. For those who's been taking it long-term how do you manage the side effects you had at the beginning of treatment?

Most people report the side effects go away once you are at your target dose for a couple weeks.
Hi everyone! Well, I am well into my third week of Strattera, and most of the side effects have disappeared. Hooray for that...I am not sure if I'm noticing any positive improvement yet. But I did remember a few things yesterday that I realized I normally would have forgotten, but I also made a conscious effort to remember. So I'm not sure which it is...So I'm hanging in there waiting patiently for improvement....

BananaSlip 10-24-05, 10:47 PM I asked my boyfriend to observe my behavior for any changes so I could see if and when the med started working. He noticed these changes:
- able to follow our conversations better
- better focus on just us when we went out for dinner instead of looking at other people and our surroundings
- not as forgetful
- able to beat him in Chess
I noticed that I:
- went back to retrieve things I left in the room I just walked out of
- was able to think about my responses before saying them
- was able to absorb information that I read
- was able to contribute during interesting discussions instead of just quietly trying to absorb everyone else's responses
Like I've said in other posts, the only way I knew it was working was that I saw a dramatic difference in me when I went off of the med for short periods of time. Off the med, I:
- was more forgetful
- was slower to finish tasks
- found deskwork to be painful and frustrating
- was speaking words in the wrong syntactical order
- had a greater urge to "ride" my shopping carts on the way to the car (that was really fun, though :D )
Morbid Parable 10-24-05, 11:24 PM Yes, Banana, I hear that the advantages of medication are noticed more when they are wearing off rather than when they are working.
Most people I know on Adderral say they feel scattered on days they don't take it. I wasn't given Adderral due to my historical abuse of drugs.
Anyhow, I am still in the "adjusting" phase of Strattera and any positive feedback is welcome in my world. So thank you for sharing some positives.
Vamoose,
Larry
BananaSlip 10-25-05, 12:00 AM Sorry, I may need to pack up the "I love Strattera" T-shirts. Note to self: must remember to shut one's mouth (or typing) now and then. Forgive my repetitiveness. I'm just grateful for the benefits, is all. :)
Morbid Parable 10-25-05, 12:30 AM Yeah, okay??????????
