View Full Version : Sleep Problems
LiLMissADDitude 09-19-03, 02:50 AM
I have to be awake in 5 hours and I cant sleep. I'm a night person. I love being awake at night. The air is so clean. The stars are so bright. And I love the sounds of the frogs in the swamp. But of course this world demands that I be awake during the day and sleep at night. GRRRRRRRRRRRR I am not happy about this. Why cant classes at school run from 11pm-3am I would love that. But nooooooooo it has to be in the morning and afternoon.
Well Im going to go try to sleep again.....
waywardclam 09-19-03, 03:34 AM I sleep very little, but I much prefer it that way, it's not a question of insomnia...
LiLMissADDitude 09-19-03, 10:18 AM How little? To me insomnia is when you can't sleep more'n 2 hours in a night lol. One time I didnt sleep at all for a few days I got sleep deprivation or somethin..... everything seemed very very strange. Like the twilight zone.. or maybe some sort of cartoon.
ferrette1976 09-19-03, 11:07 AM I wouldn't say that I have insomnia, but it takes me forever to fall asleep. I toss and turn for at least an hour before I finally start sawing logs.
When I was a kid and had to share a bed with my sister, she would roll up the comforter and place it between us. I guess I used to kick her in my attempt to finally find that comfortable position in which I could sleep! Unfortunately, I still haven’t found it.
joanrdtobe 09-19-03, 12:28 PM When I have majorly stuff going on....I will wake up in the middle of the night -- 2:00 a.m. or 3:00 a.m. and for the life of me -- I cannot get back to sleep....I tend to have no problem GETTING to sleep...it's STAYING asleep an entire night that gives me the most problems....
So as a result, I never get a full night's sleep..and I really believe I need a full night's (7 hours) sleep....to function, focus, etc.
fasttalkingmom 09-19-03, 03:46 PM I don't have sleeping problems as long as I"m taking my Dex.
healthwiz 09-19-03, 06:04 PM I've always been a night owl, but recently I read an article that indicating a link was shown between depression and people having a gene that causes them to require much higher doses of Vitamin B to metabolize. It said that people with the gene had a 50% higher chance of suffering depression, and that researchers believed it would be found to be related to many other neurological disorders in future studies.
So I figured I probably would have that gene, and I started taking Vit B complex, daily, in the time release form, 50 mg at first, but now I found 150 mg type. The result?
I didn't know it, but I started getting tired at a normal hour. I rarely stay up till 3 am anymore. I get tired around 11 and stretch myself sometimes as late as 1 am, but usually have to hit the sack by 1230. And the other part, I am waking up at 6 am or so. If I sleep in, its till 7....but not till whatever hour of the day it used to be. In contraxt, I used to stay up all night, nothing in my body would ever tell me to go to sleep.
So I think the Vitamin B is the answer for balancing my sleep cycle. I think it has helped me in other ways too, perceptually, calming me, and in other ways.
Its worth mentioning, I also take a liquid multivitamin mineral trace element formula too. I really believe the liquid vitamin helps too. I usually don't get a lot of benefit from vitamins because I think I don't digest them well, but the liquid formula seems to work. The only problem, the one I got this time is a different brand, and it tastes HORRIBLE. I feel like I'm swallowing syrup of epicaque!!

Wheel1975 09-19-03, 07:12 PM Try controlled napping during the day, and do studying or additional home work at night if you are up. History, even though i like it, or reading later at night usually reinduces sleeping for me!
I should be up in three shifts, Early morning to mid morning, midday, evening to wee hours. sleep after midnight to 4 or 5, sleep 11:30 to 2, 8:30 to???
Who knows!
All I have to do is worry or have something exciting happening the next day and bam! I get insomnia :( Have you ever woke up at 1 in the morning and said "Great, I have only 5 hours left till I have to get up" then a half hour later "Great, I have only 4 and a half hours left to sleep.." and it goes all night.
tudorose 10-02-03, 07:35 AM Melatonin helps - but check with you doc for clashes with prescribed meds first
healthwiz 11-21-03, 09:39 AM The poll might include a few more choices in between..suggestion.
healthwiz 11-21-03, 10:04 AM Remember to check if you have sleep apnea, it can cause insomnia, and can cause daytime sleepiness. If you have sleep apnea, it can sure cause a lot of other psychological and neurological effects and at a later stage can cause serious medical problems if not addressed.

Gregster 12-18-03, 05:06 PM Trouble falling asleep for me - my mind races sometimes. And the more I want to sleep the worse the problem gets. No point in even trying to sleep on some occasions - I just end up looking at the inside of my eyelids! I'll nod off at 2 am on a good night and sleep til 7am - and once I am awake that's it - I absolutely won't be able to snooze or nap til the next night. On a bad night it might be 4 or 5am before I actually fall asleep.
I take Remeron and one of it's side effects is sedation - it hits the H1 Histamine receptors pretty hard - which sucks if it makes you groggy the next day but is great if you need something to help you sleep. Gonna have to give it up prior to my diagnosis, which will really suck - you get used to having a good night's sleep!

SubtleMuttle 12-20-03, 10:29 PM I come from a family of insomniacs (either that or we're all too hyper to desire sleep), except for my mother who will eat and pracitcally fall asleep at the dinner table once she's full.
When I was a little kid, I couldn't sleep- so my mom would do something like run the dishwasher or the vacume cleaner that would make a steady noise to drown out everything else, and that helped. Then when I was a teen, I would sleep for about 3 hours a night, wake up at 4 A.M. feeling just fine. Now I'm in my early twenties and I either don't sleep, or I sleep for 12 hours and never feel rested. When I get up early to go to my classes; I never truely wake up until 4 P.M.; no matter how much coffee I drink. I can't take insomnia medications because they provoke migraines and panic attacks. Melatonin really helped for a while- but only that.
Healthwiz- thanks for the tip about the vitamin B; I'll try that! Makes sense to me! :)
I agree- the night is so much better than the day! I wish I lived in a city that was up all night so that I could be nocturnal without feeling like a total freak.
