Extended release stimulant effective for long-term ADHD treatment

A new study has found that an all-day, extended-release stimulant for treating attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) remains effective for up to two years without significant side effects. In the October issue of the Journal of the American Association of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, a multi-institutional research team reports finding that treatment with Concerta, a once-daily form of the drug methylphenidate, successfully controlled ADHD symptoms in more than 200 children with ADHD. The study was supported by McNeil Pharmaceuticals, which manufactures Concerta.

Well that's great to know since my 11 yr old daughter has been on in it for 3 1/2 yrs without much side affect. It works well for her and I'd hate to have to find a new med that works as well for her.

Hm, sponsored by makers of Concerta? Better to be skeptical; I don't mean Concerta is ineffective, but maybe it's not as good as advertised...

Thanks for posting that.

Did you see all the bogus ads for"natural remedies?"

It's sad.

P.S.

The grants are "unrestricted."

Expect somone to come along and try and replicate it.

It's not about who paid for the thing. It's about how well it was done and if those data mean anything.

I just began taking Concerta. I am in my early forties and my doctor told me I could take it for another 8 to 10 years max because after 50 it would have a negative effect on my heart. I have very good blood pressure and my heart beats...Can anyone give me a comment on the information I received?
thanks,
~gourmet~

I'm in my late 50's and have been taking Concerta for the past year. Haven't had any problems ....yet!

Sure hope someone else can contribute to this--will ask my doc next time I see him, but that won't be real soon.

I'm wondering how much just depends on the individual's health in general. Since for an ADDers the meds are used by the body without leaving a lot the body can't use, I wonder if it would maybe be less of a strain on our bodies than a non ADDer. Anybody smart out there with the answer?
