View Full Version : AntiVirus Software Andrew 09-21-03, 08:56 PM Have questions about anti-virus software? Which one do you like? Have any horror stories? This is the place to discuss them :) waywardclam 09-21-03, 09:42 PM I'm a computer technician, and I recommend AVG... available as a free download online from www.grisoft.com (careful you don't download the pay version). Garry 09-21-03, 10:32 PM I have used AVG for several years (free Version) works for me Tara 09-21-03, 10:40 PM What type of updates does the free version of AVG offer? waywardclam 09-21-03, 11:13 PM Infinite free online updating. You can set it to do it automatically at a certain time of day as well, if your computer is on and connected, which may save some ADD people the hassle of taking care of that little detail. InattentiveType 09-23-03, 11:32 AM I also use AVG. I try to install it anytime I work on someones computer. Between AVG and ZoneAlarms mail safe they catch all kinds of mail based bugs. They seem to have an update about once a week. And you can't beat the price. $0 InattentiveType 09-25-03, 01:32 PM Another free scanner is located here http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ It's runs as a Java app in your browser. It's really slow but looks to work well and you don't have to install anything. Spirit 01-28-04, 10:07 PM Has anyone had any experience with Sygate Firewall. Some how someone got past zone alarm on boogies computer and placed some files on her hard drive. We later found out it was a Trojan with malicious intent. Not only did have a key logger in it, but it also kept duplicating programs until her hard drive was completely full. Andrew 01-28-04, 11:20 PM If she inadvertently clicked on an infected e-mail attachment (there's a new worm going around) then that would explain what happened. Make sure your AV is up to date, then scan. Sygate Firewall is good, but wont prevent this from happening...just need to be careful about opening e-mails from people you dont know. Gil 02-26-04, 07:51 PM I also reccomend trend micro, except I use the registered version. It came with a computer I had... until it died... RIP, Mr. Pete. The exact name of the software is "trend micro pc cillin" there is also a 30 day trial version for free. Just reinstall the software every 30 days and you have it for free, permanently. steveb 02-26-04, 09:39 PM http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/learn_more.cfm It is Computer Associates' Virus Scanner and Personal Firewall free for a year. Behind the scenes i'm running Spy sweeper which stays resident and weekly scans with ad aware and spybot. All but spy sweeper are free and catch everything. DON'T use Norton as it causes more problems than it solves. Casscia 01-28-05, 11:57 AM Anti virus soft ware! Cass Ian 01-28-05, 12:07 PM Any of the Linux based operating stystems I've used don't require any of this hocus pocus to remain safe and secure. To start I'd recommend the latest Mandrake or Fedora distributions. It's a different world when you aren't vulnerable to much. Oh.. and it's all free.. the whole dang thing and all the slick office suites and software. Free is good right? Living free. Ian. That's ok Ian, I'm working on writing one for Linux   !!!!!!! Seriously, AVG Pro wins way above the others at the present time according to many sources. Forget the free AV's. You get what you pay for. Unless you know how to manually remove virii, pay for a decent AV. Leave NORTON 2004 alone. It's a virus unto itself. ;) Ian 01-29-05, 12:38 AM http://www.hbedv.com I had to verify my system integrity and used this to prove my point. Cheers! Ian. Ancient Music 01-29-05, 04:57 AM Viktoria and I both use AVG pro anti virus and Zone Alarm Pro Firewall. We were using Zone Alarm Pro Anti Virus e-mail scanner but it failed to detect three e-mail based trogans with the email scanning in operation. We disabled the ZA antivirus and retained the firewall. Immediately on installing AVG Pro anti-virus it detected the trogans in our PC's and deleted them. So .........Zone Alarm Anti Virus get the negative "thumbs down" from us in favor of AVG Pro Anti -virus, which gets a "thumbs up". We are still using the Zone Alarms firewall though. Anybody have any thoughts on preferences for a Firewall? Is there a better one> RhapsodyInBlue 01-29-05, 05:15 AM http://www.personal-firewall-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ |
