View Full Version : strattera and menstruation?
I was just recently diagnosed with ADD at 47. I have never missed a period in my life. I just started taking Strattera about a month ago, and now have not had my period yet. It's about a week late. Has anyone had this side-effect?
Or could I possibly be starting menopause and not know it?:eyebrow:
I am so glad you asked that question,,, mine wasn't late but I started my cycle as soon as I started straterra and then 5 days later (like my normal cycle) I was done but then 5 days later I started again but only for 24 hours but very heavy. another 5 days after that I was on my cycle again but this time it just would not stsop,,, if I stopped for a day,,, it would start again the next day.
My Dr. took me off both my meds because both can cause menstral irregularities but usually mild,,, I was one of the rare cases that just couldn't stop. I was almost scared I was going to become anemic or something lol.
I am not sure if it was the straterra or the prozac but now that I see you are having something strange happening with your cycle,,, just maybe it was the strattera. Bad thing is now I am on nothing at all lol for another two weeks,,,,,,, God help those around me. lol
Geez, sounds like you are going thru the wringer with this...as of today I'm about a week late. No, being pregnant is not possible. If you ain't gettin' it, it ain't happenin'. So that leaves that idea out. I see my doc on the 11th so I gotta wait til then and see what he says about it. I only missed my period once in my life due to extreme stress. No stress here anymore.
That was a pretty scary experience you went through. At least you know what caused it. What will you go on now for meds??
dannitaz 11-02-05, 07:12 PM Strattera has caused the distnce between my periods to be quite a bit longer-- sometimes down to having time of month every other month. Since I am not trying for a baby, I could not care less.
I go see my Dr. on the 14th and then he will go from there but I tried to get in sooner because this whole switch of being medicated for depression to not being medicated for anything has kind of sent me spiraling but he is out of the country so I will have to wait. I am actually thinking about starting the medicine again till I go see him and just dealing with my cycle. It is only 12 days away and the way I feel right now,,, I would rather have my cycle for a month straight then to keep feeling this way. But that is a whole nother thread sorry. lol

Or could I possibly be starting menopause and not know it?:eyebrow:I don't know about whether that is a Strattera side effect or not but guessing that things were getting rougher or you wouldn't just have been diagnosed with ADHD. There is some research out there that as women enter perimenopause their ADD symptoms get worse (that definately happened to me). It appears that estrogen may effect the release and reuptake of dopamine which is a central problem in ADD. So it may be that it was coming anyway.

Interesting...my period is now nearly 10 days late...I will wait til the end of this month and see what happens and make an appt. with the gynecologist. Meanwhile, I do see the psych again next Friday, so lets see his opinion on this....the saga continues.!
PinkPanther_04 11-05-05, 08:42 AM I was just thinking about this the other day. I have a terrible time keeping up with my cycle, but I think I'm at least a week late. I started on Strattera almost three weeks ago. If fewer periods are a side effect, I sure won't complain, but I don't like the uncertainty about it that I have right now. With my luck I'll get it next weekend when we're on vacation.
I wonder if this is a side effect for "older women"? I don't know how old you are....I will be seeing my psych this week and this will definitely be a topic. I also don't like the uncertainty. It's scary not knowing what's going on in your body. But isn't it always the way when you plan a vacation, that along comes your period????
I also started Strattera about a month ago. My last cycle was Sept. 30....still waiting.
sgolden5374 11-06-05, 02:51 AM I had no idea that Straterra could effect menstrual cycles. I take 80 mg a day and I haven't yet been on it a month, but I *should* be starting my period within the next week. I noticed today that I was considerably more irritable than I have been since beggining the medication. Also, I've been feeling restless. Told my hubby I wasn't sure if the meds were working properly or if it was hormones. Now that I have a heads up I'll definitely be sure to track my cycles better. As much as I hate having a period I really hate missing one -- first there's the "OMG! We couldn't possibly be having another baby!" scare and then there is the yucky way I feel when I am retaining water and feeling all bloaty!!
PinkPanther_04 11-06-05, 10:02 AM I wonder if this is a side effect for "older women"? I don't know how old you areI'm 26, so it's probably not an age-related issue.
And no, I'm not pregnant. My boyfriend's "fixed." ;) But isn't it always the way when you plan a vacation, that along comes your period???? I've been lucky with that for the most part, but this time it really would be a problem. We're going down to Key West for our anniversary, and if I'm on my period I don't think I'm supposed to go swimming or snorkeling (because it's thought that menstruation can attract sharks). :(
I'm 47 and it could be possible, but I have no other "side-effects" or menopause! Plus, I am single and can't really be bothered with finding another loser right now. It's been a long time since I've had sex.
Sometimes I feel like I've been having cramps, but it doesn't last for more than a couple minutes. Weird. To be continued.....
PinkPanther_04 11-08-05, 01:16 PM Okay, just got it today. My doc increased my dose yesterday to 80mg (from 40mg the last three weeks), and I was feeling a bit down and stressed out last night. I thought it was just due to the increase of meds (it felt very much like the first couple of days on Strattera), but I guess PMS was involved as well. Considering that, I'm surprised I wasn't in more of a funk than I was.
Hmmmm, well at least you got it!! At least you know now that its not you! So now I'm thinking it IS me!! My stomach has been hurting a bit, cramp-like, but still nothing. I made an appt with my gyno next week, lets see what she says. Problem is, I'm sure she may not know a thing about Strattera...the saga continues. I'll keep ya posted!
Busymind04 11-11-05, 02:57 PM My periods changed since taking Strattera, my period is later that what it used to be, last month I was 5 days late and even went to doctor to get a pregnancy test too, because that could have been, but when I finally got my period it was shorter, like 2 days. now thins month I got my period on time. It is a side effect of the drug. but not that negative for me, so I can deal with it.
Hey Ladies! Well, I finally got the darn thing today. So it was over 2 weeks late. My stomach was hurting me on and off for over a week. Maybe it is menopause after all?? My doc told me that there is a test you can take now to find out for sure. I hope to take it!
Ok. Here's a twist. I'm on Adderall and my cycle was weird this month. I spotted like I usually do right before I start and then nothing. But, it seems that my pms has gone, too. I certainly wouldn't complain as long as it's not going to cause problems later.
The gal at add-fibromyalgia.com thinks there is a definite hormonal link. I'll have to ask my doc next week, too.
