View Full Version : Omega 3 ... Does anyone use this?
...Daria 11-12-05, 02:52 PM I have just heard about Omega 3 being a good source of nutrition and even for mental nutrition at that.
Can anyone give me more insight as to how this has come about and IF this has shown proof positive for any help?
mctavish23 11-12-05, 03:01 PM I do, but only as a supplement.
I do also as a daily supplement.

I take it when I remember it. :D
There are a ton of articles out there on it's benefits, here is one search from Google Scholar:

...Daria 11-15-05, 12:53 PM I have actually found more than a few studies on Omega Fish oil being very beneficial to the brain.
Pretty neat idea as a natural resource if you ask me. I will be sure to update here on any progressions.
Thanks all, Charisma.
Frangible 11-15-05, 06:19 PM I take it, but it's not a panacea for ADHD, and was specifically noted in at least one long-term study I read to not reduce ADHD symptoms. That said, I still think it's an important supplement to take if you don't get any W-3 in your diet naturally.
lilthingsADDup 11-15-05, 06:34 PM It totally helped me, fish and flaxseeds.
...Daria 11-15-05, 09:05 PM yes I hear this has never given off any negative results. I think it can benefit if at all for our health. It is like, you feel better inside then you will also show it outside. Yes? :D
maddipoo 11-28-05, 03:42 PM Omega 3
Yes I have heard that Omega 3 is supposed to help people with ADD concentrate. I tried taking it in the past, and I bought a new bottle a few weeks ago. The problem I have with it is that you burp after taking it and it tastes fishy (b/c it is fish oil). So I always quit taking it before I can see a difference.

I will be testing this out in the next week. Well, begining to anyway. I already take cod fish oil for medicine.. haha I guess the pills wont kill me.
:)
barbyma 11-28-05, 09:18 PM I would not look to this to illeviate symptoms, but it is almost certainly part of the big picture.
This is a bit backwards, but I've seen a few studies that have demonstrated omega 6 deficiencies in AD/HD individuals. This by no means can be translated to "fish oil is good for ADD", but it can't hurt. I'm eating more fish these days.
I'm not sure where the omega 3 stuff comes from; I've seen/heard some commercials pushing this, but no studies.
cynthiatweedle 12-05-05, 12:17 AM Check out Omegas at this website:
www.adhdnews.com/forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=16 (http://www.adhdnews.com/forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=16)
BTW, you are supposed to take it with vitamin E. There are a few products that don't even have the fish burp.
cynthiatweedle 12-05-05, 09:35 AM Sorry about posting a link to another site. I would delete it or edit it but I can't figure out how to.
Tracy H. 02-19-06, 07:48 PM I have tried omega 3 & 6 in emu oil capsules! I started it for hip pain (arthritis) and I have seen a dramatic improvement in my ADD bahaviour..I just posted about it in my journal . They are fantastic and no smell, no yukky taste, and come in capsules!

If you have experience "fish burps" with your Omega 3 supplement, I highly reccommend Coromega. I found it at my local health store. It comes in a box of ketchup-like packets. The look is quite unappealing--it comes out like mustard. But when mixed in a blender with fruit and orange juice, you can't taste it. And no fish burps. It's not cheap. I paid $21 for 28 packets. But found it much cheaper online. It seems to work very well for my son.
relientk 02-24-06, 10:15 PM I have used Ritalin and Adderall. Omega 3's beat both of these meds hands down. My mood, focus, and stability are much better now that Im taking the Omega 3's. Flax seeds are great too, they have Omega 3's as well.
guy1985 03-04-06, 09:35 PM I chance upon this site http://fishoil.atspace.com telling the good-ness in fishoil
Has anyone still taking fishoil for their ADD? how much dosage did you take to be effective? I need feedback on this as I mighe be taking fish oil for my ADD since it is not consider a drug in Singapore
phoenix_soleil 03-05-06, 02:34 AM I wouldn´t expect a dramatic result. I´ve been taking omega/3 suplements for quite some time now (at least more than 2 years) and I'm still ADD. I started it for my SAD (seasonal affective disorder, more commonly known as winterdepression) and I do see results there.
The most famous research for omega-3 and behavior must be the durham study. If you go to pubmed and search there you can find a lot of research, mind you, it is for professionals.
The reason why they believe it affects the brain, is because the brain mainly exists of fatty acids, that's why it can help.
About the omega-6, I wouldn't just start any omega-6. Research shows that people in western societies have an overabundance of omega-6. It might even be a case of the omega-3 and 0mega-6 balance being of. Taking even more omega-6 would make it worse. Try reading "The omega-3 connection" it's pretty readable and it gives a good idea of why omega-3 might help.
I take my omega-3 (total 1500 mg EPA+DHA) before breakfast, especially banana helps againts the burps for me. In the Netherlands (but maybe you can order it from somewhere else) there's is also a product called morEPA, which has a lemony taste to it, but that's even more expensive than the stuff I take.
The vitamin E story, you need at least a little amount of it, to stop the fatty acids from rotting, but this has already been added to the capsules. In my supplements, there's a total of 100 i.u. of vitamine E. I don't think taking more would be wise. There are different kinds of vitamine E, there's only one kind in most supplements. THere is research suggesting that to much of this kind of vitamine E might be harmful, because the other kinds of vitamine E don't get a chance anymore.
(ps. I'm no expert, I just had to write an 80 hour asignment on omega-3 as a final project for highschool (obligated for all Dutch students, in the higher levels of highschool), so that's why I know something about this subject.)
sassy197 03-29-06, 02:40 AM I find that omega 3s help me with my mood and stress overall. I don't think that they help with ADHD, but hey nothing has helped me.
I'm at a point right now, where if something is not going to do any harm, I am willing to give it a shot. But that's just me.
guy1985 04-02-06, 09:47 PM So is EPA or DHA more important for ADD-ers?
guy1985 04-08-06, 04:02 AM hi,
whenever i started taking one time 8 pills of FO each day consisting of 400EPA/200DHA each pill, i would be ****ting out the fishoil from upcoming few toliet sessions. I am still having this problem despiting eating for days. However, I do feel my skin feels smoother the next morning I woke up.If I take more like 15-20 pills, I would be ****ting out the fishoil for the following few days and even a simple gas fark would come out flowing fishoil from my ***. Please note that I have ADD and is not on any medicine. I tried eating those High in DHA LOW in EPA fish oil about the same total dosage, it doesn't have the above effects at all. The High in DHA Low IN EPA fish oil does help in my ADD but I feel I can still further improve on the condition by adding EPA to my diet. But it seem eating the 8 X 400EPA/200DHA makes the condition back to my old self instead.Am I right to say my body couldn't absorb all the EPA and has to clear off them during my toilet session? It seem I am the only one having this problem in this forum. It is said in dr sears book that only eating high dosage of FO can have a effect on improving our health status. I would really any reply from any of the members here. Thanks a lot
panthoot 04-08-06, 03:14 PM are there vegetarian (non-fish) omega 3 oils that work? I can't eat any meat or fish.
jacinta 04-08-07, 06:34 AM yeah, its cool and i feel better if i eat lots of sardines and tuna which have omega 6 in them too.
are there vegetarian (non-fish) omega 3 oils that work? I can't eat any meat or fish. There sure are. I prefer the Udo's Choice DHA Blended oil which is the only vegetarian source of DHA on the market. The DHA is harvested from species of marine algae (which is revolutionary since before it only came from fish oil), and is then blended with organic flax seed oil, organic borage seed oil, and evening primrose oil, among other oils to offer a complete Omega fat profile.
This is one of the only oils I have found that comes in a glass bottle. These oils are best stored in glass due to their ability to leach toxins from plastics. Food for thought.
Crazygirl79 05-16-07, 08:31 PM I've also tried Omega 3 and I've seen a great improvement as well, I was thinking of starting the Dore program but it's too expensive and while it's a great program there seems to be too much poking and prodding by the therapists and I don't think I could go through that again and as of 2 weeks time I will re start the Omega 3 treatment along with Brain Gym.
So I do recommend the Omega 3 treatment as it's great!
Selena:)
