View Full Version : Has being properly medicated helped you in your Recovery? Ihavekeys? 11-13-05, 12:21 AM please respond only if you have ADHD and are a recovering addict who has sought legal medication treatment. Thanks!! :D speedo 11-13-05, 09:38 AM Recovery is an odd word, I think. I have not recovered from my syndrome. I have adapted, and getting appropriate medication has been part of that adaptation. I would definitely NOT be very well at all if I were not on medications. ME :D Ihavekeys? 11-13-05, 01:32 PM I agree, recovery is an odd word. my usage of it goes back to narcanon. we are always in recovery (or the process of adapting) due to our disease (condition). I say the terms interchangably although I am aware some prefer different terminology. thanks for the reply as I am very interested in how medication effects ADDers with addiction. I am very glad meds have helped you! :) mctavish23 11-13-05, 02:28 PM It has helped me tremendously. bookfan 11-14-05, 08:31 PM I've only been on medications about 6wks....I'm finding out that I can concentrate better during the meeting....I don't get as distracted & can usually follow & comprehend what has been said...boredom has been one of the biggest obstacles for me in recovery....I would get bored during meetings & with going to meetings...I'm going to see if things change the longer that I'm on the medication..... Nick TheBrainiac 11-16-05, 02:12 AM I could never figure out why I always felt the need to be on something to be happy. I dabbled here and there with marijuana, cocaine, and speed very little. I found that on the stimulants I was not only content, but I was able to get so much done that I could not get done before. I didnt seem to get as lost, or lose my train of thought as easily. Well, I failed a drug test for work, and nearly lost my job so I had to go through some programs and satisfy the requirements for keeping my job. Through a Medical Doctor, I was referred to an addiction medicine specialist and psychiatrist. Without even knowing it, I had ADHD. The physician and I went through several meetings with my family and my past before coming to the dx of ADHD Inattentive, Combined. This physician put me on ADDerall and instantly my life became a real life again. Without the use of Alcohol, or Drugs. Though I was not a very heavy user, I did abuse some drugs for years up to the diagnosis. Yes, the treatment has greatly reduced my impulsive desire to use drugs. I am around them everyday at work and would never even think of doing something stupid just to obtain some type of feeling to numb my ADHD inflicted mind....
