My love for music came to me honestly. If gramps wasn't playing, he was singing. That beautiful tenor voice booming with such exuberance and pride. Didn't matter what time of day. Didn't matter how he was feeling. You could hear him and it always touched your heart.

One of many things that he taught me was that music will soothe you, mend your broken heart, express love and joy, and take you places that you always dreamed. My happiest moments are of him singing and playing his music.

His favorite song was the Mills Brothers Paper Dolls. He loved to tell the story of a young sailor who was sitting in the theater on leave and the lights come up and the audience begins to sing. He didn't know WHY he stood up but he just loved the song so and the audience grew quiet as he sang. Once he finished and looked around a woman asked, "You're missing your girl sailor?" and he said, "My Irish Doll is at home."

I know it doesn't seem like a love song but if you heard him sing it...it was to him.
