Why dont my threads ever get any responses? I am really starting to take this personally. Even if you dont have any suggestion it you could write a kind word.

I know people in this forum knwo what it is like to not do good in a class
or have some ideas how to study. I just had to say what was on my mind. I am like everyone else whould be nice to have some support:soapbox: :foot:  :(

Hi auntchris:

It's nothing personal, believe me! Some people are probably like me, and don't feel they have any good advice to give.

I do feel for you about trouble studying. I had a lot of trouble at various points in school.

I am out of college now. I did well in college, but I don't give a lot of advice on study habits because I don't think my methods generalize too well.

I basically told myself, I'm here for a reason: to walk out of here with a sheepskin and a straight-A average, and nothing less will suffice. At the beginning of each quarter, I researched what I needed to do in order to get an A in each class, and did that as a minimum, not matter how boring the class. I did trip up once, and get an "A-" due to a miscalculation. I really beat myself up over that...

I know most people can't do this. I probably couldn't do it today (the "fire" just isn't there any more -- it started burning lower as my self esteem improved...)

But I do know what it's like to not do well in class. It really sucks, especially when you feel like you're not doing as well as you should.

Thanks for saying something and what you said was intelligent. I appreciate the fact that you wrote what you experienced for yourself. I can take from that and use it for me .

I ahve had a lot of issues going on taking care of a lady in the hospital and her dog and scratched glasses,,,,,everything happens at once you know murphy's law.

my history teacher and i were talking the other day and he said i would be lucky if i got a D. I cant afford a D I just cant remember all that stuff from the beginning of the semester. I have to get an A on the final in order to pass with a C.

I also have a learning disability other than epilepsy which doesnt help. No excuses just explaining thanks for the reply

if you can't remember-then what do you think should be done?

If I were you (not being able to really remember what happened at the beginning of the year) I would study my bottom off. You just need to find time to remember. Ask your teacher for advice---that's your best bet-it's his class-he should know exactly what you should do to get an A on his final.

Hi Chris,

I’m new to the forum and to the known world of ADD in general.

My biggest problem is that I can’t do anything without a ton of pressure. This means that I am always in a time crunch with my school work. Even with this time crunch I still can not concentrate well enough to read analytically. So, the single most important technique that has gotten me through so far is the art of skimming. That is, reading chapter summaries first then previewing the topic titles for each section. With this done I read the first sentence of each paragraph and then lightly skim the rest of the paragraph for important details given in the summary.

This type of thinking applies to writing as well. I think generally of what I want to say, come up with topic sentences and supply the evidence for the paragraphs.

I use repetition and note cards to learn details, spelling and formulas.

The best book for me has been “How to Study in College” and I would also recommend “What A students Know”.

These techniques have gotten me two associate degrees but I am starting to have significant trouble with some of my upper level classes.

I’ll let you know when I come up with the solutions for my current problems.

I hope this helps,
James
