View Full Version : hi. i need some encouragement.
beccablue 11-25-05, 07:55 PM i was diagnosed with ADD a couple months ago. i've spent these last couple months discouraged, sick from med changes, and desperately trying to get even a fraction of my homework done. now i am preparing for finals & piecing together the notes i have from when i was paying attention (to reading or lecture). the topics are interesting its just that there's so much of it. i've been spending every waking nondistracted moment putting together an outline of the concepts but i just want to cry because there is so much that is missing and i have to work so much harder than everyone else just to get by. & i feel exhausted and demoralized working so hard to understand and remember just enough to respond to essay questions in a 3-4 hour test [well, actually 4 tests]
Please, if you have a minute, can you just post some words of encouragement? anything. thanks.
livinginchaos 11-25-05, 08:27 PM You can and will get all figured out, beccablue!!
I was in college when I was diagnosed, although I didn't go through med difficulties, I remember what it was like to struggle day in and day out. I felt I was working 10x harder than any other student.
When you find the med that works well for you - it will be worth it. Hang in there!!
When my doc perscribed adderall and it worked for me - I no longer had to worry about the game of catch up and not being distracted.
Keep up all your hard work, becca! It's hard and exhausting - but you can do it!!!
beccablue 11-25-05, 09:22 PM Thanks.
mctavish23 11-25-05, 09:39 PM Be sure to remember to:
1) be good to yourself;
2) ask for help (from friends, roommates, etc);
3) make sure you have academic accomodations thru Sect. 504;
4) make sure your meds are working;
5) take time out to relax, workout, do yoga, watch Beavis & Butthead and/or Andy Milanokus.
good luck and hang in their

william tell 11-25-05, 10:04 PM You can do it ! because you're you !
you've made it this far because of your superior intellect !
ADD can be an assett ,be proud of it .
remember how easy everything comes to you when you want it ?
Remember who you are ! beccablue, you're the fighter ,the Man ,the go to person ,your stealth ,your wisdom ,your ingenuity ,your cunningness !
the only person holding you back is you ,isn't it time you gave yourself a break and let the champion back out to play ,these lessor mortals don't hold a candle to you ,because of who you are !
50 cents please :D
barbyma 11-25-05, 10:11 PM My advice:
McT's advice is great; listen to it.
In addition, it sounds like you're overwhelmed. When my son sees a page of math, he breaks down. We've learned to cover most of the page and only move it when he's finished a smal part. Before he knows it, he's done the whole page!
So, my advice would be to break it into as small of chunks as you can (one chapter at a time, maybe) and take frequent breaks.
That's the best I've got, so I hope it helps. Hang in there & good luck!
beccablue 11-26-05, 03:52 PM Thank you all so much!
Just keep going. You are probably doing better than you think. It is not so much an ADD thing, as it is that college is a ton of work. ADD just makes it more work. Keep going.
good luck

QueensU_girl 11-26-05, 04:09 PM Find a Tutor to work with you on your schoolwork. It is much harder to get distraceted if you are working 1-on-1 with a helper.
This is why i always loved group work in school...gotta stay focused, and gotta be accountable for my portion. Fear is a great motivator!

meadd823 11-27-05, 04:17 AM Man some excellent advice here.
You say distractions are a problem. Possibly you are trying to over cram information into a sluggish fuzzy brain with tired buns and eyes.
McT idea on relaxing techniques is excellent especially if you are getting that brain going round and round feeling. Ya feel like your chasing your own tail!!! Overwhelmed yet under whelmed.
When I get the brain fogs I find exercise is good. I get into some long post and threads here and I begin to feel this fog setting in. I will read a post that I know should make sense but I sit here clueless....well I have discovered it is a clue in and of it self....I clue that it is time to wiggle!!!!!!!
Breaking up the work is a good idea but exercising the body during those breaks will improve circulation not only to those tired buns and elbows but exercise will also increase blood flow to zee ole grey matter!!! The increase circulation will allow you to feel more alert and clear headed. You don't have to run a marathon just a walk around the block, jumping jacks, stretching, doing laundry or dancing to a couple if tunes!!!!!!
Hey you didn't go this far to give up now...ADD obstenance can be a good thing!!!!
