Please post... I'm sure the clinicians on the board know more about this, but it is my understanding that personality disorders rarely respond to medication because they are not neurotransmitter driven.

Docs can treat depressive symptoms that are sometimes comorbid, but the primary disorder is difficult. In fact, personality disorders are highly resistant to all forms of treatment.

There are some theories about what causes them that would explain this; the best theory to date involves a very subtle but persistent stress that is placed on a child during the first years. The idea is that the brain develops in an abnormal fashion. An interesting example is Histrionic or Borderline. If a child is under constant low-level stress, glucocorticoids (sp?) are present in the brain much of the time. The brain becomes used to these and "craves" them when they are not there. As a result, the sufferer creates situations of stress and drama to get them going again.
