Here is a link to research results on memory. http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2005-11/uoo-dds111805.php
Veeeery intersting findings, and it explains a lot as to why we ADDers have different memory problems...some of us can't find our keys, while others have a "picture memory" of where everything in the house is. Some of us have swiss cheese memories of our past while others have no problem with long term memory.
Now I'm wondering how much these research results could help us ADDers, and if by taking the information we could greatly reduce our ADD symptoms.
For those of you who went through the loooooong test for ADD, the thorough one that took days, do you remember the part where you have to find the number in the long list of numbers? They're in colums...should be easy. My brain completely locked on that one. I tried til I cried. Couldn't do it. SooOOooOOoo frustrating. This article talks about that too. Now I need to go reread it though, because I forgot what it said. Lol!
I'm tempted to go down to the U of O (only 15 minutes from my house) and talk to this guy.... maybe donate my brain to science while I'm still using it (or not using it as the case may be).

Just wondering......
does this mean that if I forget most of what I know I'll become a genius?

Wait a minute though...their test only effectively tested visual memory...is that fair? I mean our memories are also linked to emotions, smells, etc. so where these so called "smarties" might do well at visual memory, maybe they suck with a blindfold on. Say they had to remember how many times they were poked with a stick while blindfolded. Well we ADDers often have hyper sensitivity so we'd know exactly how many times! Plus - our OCD would have us counting them all from the start! Lol! It's true though! I call, "Unfair test!" but still...the information could be useful to us in helping our ADD. :D

Oh...it says here http://www.collisiondetection.net/mt/archives/2005
/11/people_frequent.html (http://www.collisiondetection.net/mt/archives/2005/11/people_frequent.html)
that visual working memory is highly correlated with intelligence. So I guess I withdraw my "Unfair test!" accusation. But I would like to know how they proved that one....
I'll just keep talking amongst myself and eventually get it all figured out... :p

I read the article; it only looked at visual working memory, so it says nothing about long term memory or language-based memory.

This is very interesting work. What I'd like to see next is for them to look at selection in attention (when the stimulus is present) and compare those results to the that of the memory study.

It's a long way from being able to say anything about how ADD works (or doesn't). Problems with working memory can come in many forms; my visual working memory is quite good. I don't have problems selecting relevant stimuli; my problems are that when I'm distracted from what I'm working on, I sometimes lose information.
