Atarax is an antihistamine, so you shouldn't have any trouble with addiction (unlike Xanax).

It's an interesting choice for anxiety, but keep in mind that the original antidepressants and antianxiety meds were based on antihistamines.

Hope it works for you!

My psychiatrist prescribes atarax for anxiety on a regular basis. I've taken it before and didn't experience any side effects. Keep in mind, though, that I've taken over 30 psychiatric meds and have become pretty immune to side effects...LOL. And, no, atarax is not addictive. I hope it works out for you. Good luck!

There is a risk of side effects associated with Atarax, some of which are severe. If a patient is experiencing a serious side effect or an allergic reaction, they should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An allergic reaction will present with symptoms which include facial swelling, such as swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, hives, and difficulty breathing. Other serious side effects which require emergency medical attention include symptoms such as severe vision problems.
And don't take xanax, it's danger for your life!

Although antihistamines might be commonly prescribed for anxiety, I'm not sure it is actually known why they work. (To me personally always a reason to be careful)

If your doctor doesn't cover these questions after he/she prescribes it to you, then you need to ask. You can also look in the pamphlet that comes with your medication when you get it filled at the pharmacy. These things are really very informative. Wikipedia is also usually very thorough when it comes to medicines.

Please don't say things like this. Medications like Xanax can SAVE a person's life. When used properly and under the supervision/guidance of an intelligent physician, Xanax can relieve people who have horrendous panic and anxiety of tremendous daily pain and hardship. I take 2mg daily and it has saved me from killing myself. I depend on it daily just like many people depend on many different types of meds daily. It has not endangered my life. It has improved and preserved it.
