View Full Version : Should I Keep Trying with Meds?

I've just recently been diagnosed; and, so far, my first attempt at meds (see my multiple panicky posts in the Ritalin section, if you're wondering) has not been good. Now, between that and all the posts I'm reading here about people with similar problems (afternoon depression crashes, anger, extreme tiredness, etc.), I'm wondering if I'm ever going to find a suitable med at all. This is very...concerning, to say the least.

My shrink is making me wait yet another full month until she'll see me even to discuss another med. In the meantime, I get to wait, and my symptoms get to go back to the constant chaos they have been all my life. :( She's also claiming that my side effects are "the first [she's] ever heard", and would probably be quite surprised at all the responses to this board, I guess. I don't know.

What should I do? Which is worse- feeling like I'm on an addictive emotional rollercoaster with the meds; or feeling like I completely suck at adulthood and normal life due to the ADD itself?

Does it get better on meds? Can someone who's oversensitive to just about every type of prescription on the market (even including birth control pills and antibiotics!) stand a chance at successful stimulant treatment?

Despite the problems, that Ritalin gave me one day of the life of a normal person. One day of peace. At the risk of sounding way too melodramatic: What a heartbreaking disappointment. :(

What meds have you tried, Olmedina? Just Ritalin?

Meds have helped me a great deal. Meds for ADDers are trial and error. There aren't certain ones that work for certain ADHD Subtypes. I got lucky and the first med I tried worked great. I think I'm one of the few.

I'm fairly sensitive to meds, my body tends to get used to them fast, I'm allergic to several meds, but I've been on Adderall (only upping the dose once) for over 6 years.
I believe meds work - but you may have to use trial and error with meds until you (and your doc) figure out what works best.

Of course we can't tell you what to do, but . . . :)

Perhaps give a different med a shot, also you could work on coping skills with an ADHD coach or a therapist. Have you discussed all this with your doc?
Open communication about meds is so important.

Best wishes to you, Olmedina!

Yes I definately say giving up after trying just one med is way to early. I was one of the people that it took years and a ton of medications changes before finding anything that worked. Some made me very sick, some did nothing at all, and finally I found one that helped.

I can honestly say that it was all worth it once I found the med for me.

Oh and just a side note I've had a doctor tell me that the side effects I complained about were not caused by the medication before. Since that was the only med I was on, my side effects were listed as known side effects of the drug and the effects stopped when I stopped the med I decided that my doctor didn't know what she was talking about and I found a new doctor. You might need to do the same.
