View Full Version : dosage of Adderall??~
Hi, I'm new to this board and new to Adderall. Was recently diagnosed with ADD after years of depression, self injury and eating disorders. Since I've been diagnosed with ADD and medicated appropriately, my life has changed (for the better).
My question is...first I was put on Ritalin....not too much difference...then Adderall...that was the magic potion....felt immediately calm and focused...problem is the 10mg XR started wearing off by 4pm....so today I took 20 mg XR in the morning ( around 10am)...still wearing off....
Is the dose wrong, or should I be taking XR twice a day? My doctor told me it was supposed to last 12 hours....I feel so much better when I'm taking it, but when it wears off, feel back to my "old self" which is irritable, impatient, and unfocused...
sherigraph 12-28-05, 10:40 PM Well, my son is 17, 144 lbs, and was just given Adderal XR today. He is being started on 20mg, to be taken in the morning with breakfast. I was told that as it wears off, usually evening time, he could start showing signs of being moody and weepy. If that happens, he said to let him know because that means he needs a higher dose, that it is wearing off to soon. I would talk to your doctor and find out. Good luck. I hope this helps my son.
LittlePrincess 12-28-05, 11:45 PM You should take the medication how your doctor prescribed it. If you take the 2nd dose a few hours after the first dose, it will last you longer throughout the day. Be careful! If you take the dose too late in the day, you may have trouble sleeping that night.
LittlePrincess 12-28-05, 11:51 PM I decided to add more here. :)
My dose usually lasts around 8 hours for me. I suggest you start keeping a "med journal" if you are still kind of playing with the dose and the times of day you are taking them. I'm actually going to start doing this too. I'm still not on a set schedule.
Hope this helps!
barbyma 12-29-05, 02:06 AM My advice would be to wait until you've been on the dosage for at least a week before you judge. When I started Adderall, I didn't feel "adjusted" until about 3 weeks into it, and when I raised my dosage it took about a week to really gage the difference.
Your body's still making adjustments.
sherigraph 12-29-05, 12:11 PM Question here. Are you suppose to adjust the dosage on your own, or are you getting the doctors ok for it. I know my son's doctor said if we need to have it changed, just call him and he would let us know what to do. Just a concern.,
my doctor said the dose would be adjusted a few times before we found the dose the was right for me. I am back on the given dose (10mg XR a day) and I'm just not feeling any different. I tried the higher dose only one time. It's like it no longer works at all on the 10mg XR once daily dose. I see her next week so she'll probably adjust the dose as previously discussed. Just a little disappointed I guess, it was such a huge difference at first, now am back to my "normal" self which is a complete scatterbrain who is always on edge!
jennyjay 12-30-05, 12:36 AM This is the thing I don't get about pharmacies - each one gives u a different "info" sheet with the RX. The most informative one I have received for Adderall is when I got it filled at my doctors clinic pharmacy. I read that and was floored because most of that info was never on any Walgreens or Merwin Drug info sheets. What is says is this "If you are on this medication for a long period of time, it may require different dosing, talk to your doctor if you feel the drug is not working the way it should..." ect ect.
The bottom line is this, meds like adderall or any amphetamine will cause your body to build a tolorance, period. That is just the way it works. I went from 20 mg a day to 40 mg a day now 60 mg a day. I am a little scared because the 60 mg a day is starting not to cut it now that i have a high stress job. I don't know if my doctor can even go much higher then that. I tried Strattera, it DID NOT work at all, I just felt like sleeping all day, and it did nothing for my concentration. Finding a dose that works with these drugs is only temporary, u will eventually develope a tolorance and require more.
I am sorta lost myself, if I don't take my meds (adderall) i am a mess, especially at work! Then I get anxiety and have to take Xanaz for that.
It is a tough road....
Best of luck to u.

Usually, the full version of Rx info is available at the company's website. In the case of Adderall XR, it has its own page -- I hope the address is obvious from my post since posting a link to this commercial site would be a no-no.
