I'm gonna get help, guys! I've taken the first step tonight, which for me is discussing my possibly having ADD with my mother, and she agreed that we can go and get me checked out. I can't believe I'm actually going to get help and I'm so happy about it!!!!!!!!!!!! It only took me, like, 2.5 years to get the courage to do something about this ADD of mine and I'm very very proud of myself. Congratulations to me!

So, I'm going to talk to my family doc about it and get a referral to somewhere. What happens beyond that I don't know obviously. Does anyone have any tips for me? Any wisdom or advice on what I'm getting myself into?

Thanks guys!

I am glad your mother was so accepting. :)

In my opinion, you should seek a referal and get tested by a psychologist/psychiatrist. This will really ease your mind as to whether you are really ADHD. They will also be able to pick up on other issues.

I am ADHD w/hyperactivity as well as Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). It took about 2 years to get everything under control, but looking back it seems like it went really fast. I didn't get diagnosed until age 33, as well.

Take your time and be honest with your doctors. If you do not feel comfortable then look for another doctor.

Good luck and tell us how things go.

Tim,

I also have social anxiety and ADD/ADHD. I just started taking medications for both but so far have had side effects with both medications (Focalin XR and Paxeva).

I was only taking a small dose of both but I guess I'm sensitive to medications. The Paxeva was starting to work though, after taking it for about 3 weeks. For the first time probably in my entire life I was sitting in a crowded church and was not self conscious, didn't care who was looking at me...it was an amazing feeling. One I wish I could feel all the time without medication! Unfortunately I had to stop taking both medications because they were making me feel weird. Not really sure which one was bothering me at this point, maybe it was both. I would all of a sudden feel like my body was super relaxed in a strange way. My legs would feel heavy, like my body was in slow motion. Also I would be light headed and feel like my head was stuffed up with cotton. Did you ever have side effects like this?

I so want to feel that peace again, but need to find the right medication so that I don't feel strange.

Congrats, keys!!

My tip: find a psych who specializes in ADHD.

I think you'll be happy taking this road, being diagnosed and the option to take meds if you so desire.

This is a good thing. Getting diiagnosed takes away doubt amd you don't have to "guess" at what the trouble is. It makes a big difference.
