View Full Version : sleepless in nyc via adderall
fogcity 01-22-06, 03:33 PM well the adderall is a miracle drug on some fronts, but its ruining my sleep. really. i'm trying all kinds of holistic remedies, valerian, melatonin etc. I never take it after 4 pm etc.
with melatonin it difficult to get to sleep, then i wake up after 5 hours, and cannot go back to sleep. and thats the time realease kind.
Has anyone experienced this side effect going away?
Any ideas of how to deal would be apreciated!
thanks all!
I was like that for about a week. Maybe try taking earlier in the morning? I'm sure you probably already know this, but even though you may have no appetite, make yourself eat and drink plenty of water.

fogcity 01-22-06, 05:54 PM i have no problem eating, drinking tons, taking my vitamins, listening to what my body needs...
which unfortunatly is a good 8 hours of deep sleep.
Then just take a day off...
It may take you a while to get used to the medication, but untill then, if your really hurting for sleep, simply take a day of the medicaiton.
It will go away.
fogcity 01-22-06, 06:24 PM last weekend i took a weekend off, slept and slept and slept, and i was away with friends, every night they were going out, i stayed home and slept.
FUN
now i have a cold and the not sleeping is making it linger. i took today off and had a nice nap ths after noon. a glorious 2 hour nap.
i guess I was hoping somone would have a fool proof sleep cure, or say that the side effect goes away.
~sigh~
because frankly the adderall is GREAT is the focus department, and i hope i get to still use it, it's really helped me in many ways.
fogcity 01-22-06, 08:25 PM picked this up in another thread...

Some Dr.'s will prescribe sleeping pills to help with this side effect. My psych offered, but I just decided to wait it out. It went away. Maybe your dose is too high?
zz123zz 01-23-06, 12:12 PM fogcity, what time are you taking your Adderall? And is it the IR or XR? I take my dose (which is only 10mg of XR) at about 5:00 each morning. Also, I'm not a doctor, but I have read that if you eat foods with high amounts of magnesium or if you take magnesium supplements the Adderall will stay in your system longer.

wondering howlong it took before it went away.
and reagarding the time i take them, I am now keeping them by my bedside. i take 5mgxr and sometimes a tiny chip of IR to get over the hump in the afternoon sometimes, but never after 4 pm. I've worked my way UP to the 5, starting with even less. I'm just sensetivo!
I'm sensitive too. It took about a wk or two. I can't remember, it's been a while. I was on the instant release first 10 mgs in the morning and 5 at noon, and then we tried 15 xr. The IR didn't interfere with my sleep, but the XR kicked my butt. Don't worry, it'll pass :) .
fogcity 01-27-06, 11:14 AM Its getting better!! I just take one dose of Valerian in water, and lay down. It takes a little while, and ALOT of focus, but I do get there and sleep through the night. I just keep chanting SLEEP (in my head) in time to my breathing and focus as much as I can on that and only that, the feeling of getting deeper into sleep. I f i let my mind wander at all it will keep me up forever. It's like I'm hypnotising myself or something.
anyway it's not easy, but it's working!!
thanks for all of your help, you helped ease my anxiety.
cheers
RushHour 01-27-06, 09:58 PM FogCity,
Can you recommend a good physician in NYC?
I've only been in NY for 15 months. So, I'm basically new to NYC and new to trying to tackle ADD.
Not easy.

thanks all!Have you considered that your melatonin dose might not have been high enough?
I tried taking melatonin tonight, actually, same kind (time release). 1mg made me very tired, and I slept for a couple hours, so my solution was, "take two". so now I'm trying 2 mg, if I'm drowsy tomorrow really bad, I will split one of them in half. and take 1.5, etc.
andrec24 01-30-06, 03:34 AM It took six months for me. maybe I'm hyper sensitive but I could not properly sleep for the first six month without over the counter help.
fogcity 02-02-06, 06:36 PM well at least it did go away eventually. having sleeping problems again. sigh.
i guess its just the way it will be for a while.
Took my first dose yesterday. I went to sleep OK but woke up at 4:30 and couldn't go back to sleep until 6:00.
