I was curious as to how often everyone sees there doctor. I know with adderall you have to pick up your prescription every month, but how often do you actually have to see the family doctor/psychologist/psychiatrist to discuss how the medication is going?

Since treatment could potentially be long-term for many of us I could see it getting quite expensive to get help for many years, especially if the doc requires frequent visit or even makes you pay for a new prescription.

Doh, this was supposed to be a poll.

Please indicate how often you actually see your doctor. (ie monthly, every 6 months, etc) and whether or not they charge for a prescription.

My son had his first appt. in Dec. He was put on Adderall XR, 20 mg. He needed to come in for his recheck in one month. Went today, now he doesn't need to go back for 2 months unless something changes. He kept him on the same dosage for now since things seem to be going ok.

I've been going each month (since November), but I don't know if I'll have to continue that indefinitely.

My son had a follow up at the end of his first month, but seemed to have settled on a dose, so his doc said 2 months this time.

My husband sees his about every three months, to discuss how he's doing, if the medications are still helping in the same ways, if he has any side effects, etc.

When it is time for a new prescription, he simply calls the receptionist and says when he'll be in to pick it up. He goes in and picks up a prescription that is identical to the previous month's from her, without seeing the doctor and without paying anything. He says it wouldn't surprise him if the doctor writes three months of prescriptions right after his appointments and leaves them in his file for the nurse or receptionist to take out and hand to him on certain dates.

I see my psych every other month. Her nurse checks my blood pressure, and we discuss any side effects. I also have my blood checked once a year.

Both my husband (add) and I (adhd) go to the same doctor and we have to make an appt every 3 months. We each pay $30 per visit after insurance. We call in for refills every month and swing by her office to pick them up. (I dont have alot of faith in our postal system when it comes to something as important as a prescription.) I've been going to this doctor since being diagnosed in March 2005 and my husband since June 2005. She's OK but I wouldnt recommend her. Our visits only last 10 minutes if that and she does most of the talking so it's definitely not a therapy session. Just a formality for getting a controlled substance.

My son (adhd) goes to a different doctor and has been going there for several years. We call in a refill for my son's medication every month (adhd) and pick it up but he only goes a few times a year. Definitely not every 3 months. If something comes up at home or school that I feel needs to be addressed as far as medication/dose/time, I call and make an extra appointment. His appointments are $55 each because he no longer accepts insurance because it was such a paperwork hassle but we kept him as a doctor for my son because we really like him for my son. (We like him alot but not enough for my husband and I to both go there for $55 a visit because it's not as close and convenient as our doctor is.)
