View Full Version : Might I have AD(H)D?
As I understand ADD, its associated with problems keeping focus/paying attention (I dont know much about it). I do sometimes have problems paying attention, but the real problem is that I just dont care. I'll take notes in class (atleast for a while), and then when I get home and need to study, or do homework, I find that I have absolutely no drive to get anything done... at all. I'm pretty sure I failed 4 classes this last semester, simply cause I dont do anything. I'm extremely smart, scored a 96 on the ASVAB's, have a PHS reading level, score in the 90th percentile on almost everything. I've taken unofficial iq tests online (ya know those things), and always score above 135. I dont know what my problem is, and I thought maybe someone here could tell me what I could do, or diagnose my problem.
Also, I even have a girlfriend and am risking not being able to spend time with her, and I still dont have a drive to do my work, even though I love my gf.
barbyma 02-06-06, 11:31 PM Nobody here can or will diagnose you, but we can provide advice.
Apathy and lack of motivation, if they are severe enough to interfere with normal functioning (and failing most classes qualifies), are symptoms of several disorders (including ADHD).
If you visit a mental health professional or a neurologist, they'll be able to sort through this with you and arrive at a diagnosis.
Good luck!
I didnt actually mean truly diagnose my problem, I just ment help me in the right direction as to what I might call it.
Anyone else have anything to say?
ADHD is about not being able to control when and on what you can focus on.
It causes problems in social interraction, learning, and problems with behavior.
It sounds like you are having troubles with motivation. In college I called it "senioritis", because it seems to hit people in their 3rd or 4th year in a big way. You see the need to do something, you want to get it done, but simply can not find the motivation.
The only solution I was able to come up with wat to make sure I took one day off each week to go out and play, party, go hiking, or whatever. Avoid people and things that distract you from your goal, and just surrender to the task and do it. just do it, you can worry about the details later.
It is hard, and a really common problem. I don't think it is ADD related, tho I do have adhd and had it in college...
If you think you may have ADHD, you should see your doctor.

Barbyma gave you excellent advice, yet you ask for more. Being a newbie, I thought I'd give you a little more. :)
You could call your problem "interference control". That is when you have a task that requires higher ordered thinking, which would including planning and execution, you can easily get off task because you can't block out distractors or stray thoughts.
Welcome by the way.
wheresmykeys 02-07-06, 02:11 AM Hi Draous, welcome!
I experience exactly what you're saying. I struggle with this problem and have at least since highschool, at least from what I remember, but probably always. I'm not in 2nd year university and struggling with it still in a major way.
I assume i have adhd inattentive, however I'm not diagnosed so I can't really give you any facts. I just thought you might like to know you're completely understood and not alone with that issue.

Has this lack of motivation been a life long thing or a recent one?
The inability to concentrate just a problem in boring subject or all.
Also, I even have a girlfriend and am risking not being able to spend time with her, and I still don’t have a drive to do my work, even though I love my gf.
Doing your work or not has to do with the person experiencing it. Girl friend may be a distraction or not.

As these are read it may become apparent that lack of motivation, feelings of isolation, inability to consecrate may be symptomatic of several things.
Some things that may help determine one problem from others is duration, intensity, age of onset. After reading a few of these pages the writer of this post will know more than the rest of us because this person is experiencing the symptoms.
Sorry not trying to be difficult just so many things can over lap in their expression. Remember we are reading words on a page, plus most of us aren't doctors and those who are have a difficult time diagnosing people whom they have never seen in person.

Superfuzz 02-07-06, 01:00 PM I think its just lack of motivation as you said. From what I understand, people with AD(H)D can have the highest levels of motivation and enthusiasm for a task but still find it hard to complete due to low concentration levels. This is certainly the case with myself, however I am yet to know whether or not I have ADD.
