View Full Version : Should I try the drug?
wheresmykeys 02-07-06, 02:20 AM K, I have my hands on a 10mg dexedrine capsule from a friend I was given for a school project but the projects done and now I have this pill...
I am SO curious to see what effect medication can have on me, I would really like to experience mental peace and genuine concentration and normalness, or whatever effects this stuff causes...the only concern I have is I am wondering if, being that it is a drug, it could be potentially dangerous.
It would not be like taking someone elses blood pressure pills where it would cause harm if it was not prescribed for me, it's something a lot of people take for a trial and all it does is alter mental state a bit, right? So it's not dangerous?
I am not totally sure of this so I want to ask opinions around here. Try it or no?
addinbc 02-07-06, 02:34 AM Hey there fellow West Coaster...
Boy...I can understand your dilemma.
Unfortunately, however, I think it would be best for you not to take it - especially not now as it would likely keep you up all night.
When is your appointment with your doctor (psych?) for the assessment? I seem to remember you saying you had one booked, but I can't remember when. It would be best to wait until you are properly monitored before you start taking medications.
The wait is frustrating I know....but hang in there. Hopefully soon you will be under a doctor's care and working to find a treatment regimen that is best suited for you.
Right now, you don't know how this medication will affect you, and it's probably best not to take it.
As I said, hang in there.....

If it was me, I would NOT do it. Just wait for your appointment. Take it and flush it. If you get caught with it, both you and your friend would get into big trouble. Plus, you really don't know where your friend got it.
You really need to be under your doctor's care. Plus, this is one of the reasons why these types of medications are labled as Schedule II. Situations like this ruin or make it difficult for people to legally get their medicine.
Sorry for being so blunt.
steven d 02-07-06, 11:13 AM No I wouldn't take it. What if the capsule doesn't contain dexedrine but something poisonous.
Scattered 02-07-06, 11:26 AM In addition to the good points already mentioned, this might not be the right med or right dose for you and it could turn you off to the possibility of a more helpful med. This happened to a friend of mine who I'm sure is ADD. He tried a stimulent med -- it upset his stomach and made him sleepy (even though it also helped him concentrate) and he decided he didn't have ADD, so isn't getting help for his rather obvious ADD.
Also it might make you sleepy -- the first time I took my stimulent medication, it made me sleepy. The tiredness went away after several weeks, but it's not helpful when you're trying to write a paper.
Take care,

ms_sunshine 02-07-06, 12:02 PM Taking or possessing ANY medication that has not been prescribed to you is illegal, and potentially dangerous. I have known of people who were pulled over for things (speeding, drifting through a stop sign, routine dui checkpoint, etc) who were getting their licenses out of their wallets. The police saw medication bottles, and the people were questioned about whose medication it was? They had to prove they had a prescription, and submit to drug testing if there was suspicion of the wrong person using the medication.
If you think you are add/adhd and want to see if medication is helpful in managing it, you need to follow the proper steps for diagnosis, etc. Otherwise, it's considered abuse of an illegal substance. Good luck. :)
Scattered 02-07-06, 12:06 PM Thanks Ms Sunshine for mentioning the most important point! It does sometimes get overlooked.

barbyma 02-07-06, 12:11 PM All the other points aside, one dose might give you a glimpse, but it would be far from definitive. The first time you take a stimulant your body is caught off-guard and won't respond in the same way it will after several doses.
One pill trials are simply not very enlightening.
I wish I could say that I wouldn't take it. The thing is, I probably would. But, it wouldn't be the best choice for me and I don't think it's the best choice for anyone.
You've waited this long.....
Good luck with the appointment!
wheresmykeys 02-15-06, 12:45 AM ok so I was good AND bad..both at the same time! (such talent). Anyways, I discovered while playing around with the capsule being mesmirized by the little beads(small things amuse small minds  ) that the two parts it if come apart fairly easily, which popped the idea into my head that instead of take the whole thing, take PART of it. So that's what I did. I took about 10 of the little beads and I don't know how much of an effect one would expect that to have but OH MY GOSH! In about 20 minutes I was more focused than I ever remember being. I mean, it wasn't by any means perfect but it got me doing things I never would have gotten off my butt to do otherwise, mainly studying and actually focusing on it without being heavily distracted. It made my day, really!
That just gave me some motivation to get that dx asap. Having some issues with that though...
Bob1951 02-15-06, 07:35 PM wheresmykeys,
Be careful. Almost everyone gets stoned from therapeutic levels of stimulants at first. You really don't know about their efficacy or lack thereof for a few weeks. That is, after your body adjusts to the buzz and the buzz is gone.

wheresmykeys 02-16-06, 12:49 AM I guess you're right Bob. Hard to make judgements now and I'm not planning on getting any conclusions from this, it just really gave me a great day to be able to focus:)
I'm still waiting to get in to the doc, but after that I'll be doing it the right way.

First, its a really bad idea to use Dexedrine for study purposes. It is a trap that can end badly. If you need it, you can get a prescription from a doctor. I have staunchly refused to get treatment drugs illegally though I have ways of doing it ... I just will not go down that road. When you take these drugs you need (more than with other medications) an outside watchful eye for symptoms which you may not be aware of.
That said I have slightly elevated blood pressure and am taking blood pressure medcation. I am taking Dexedrine with no ill effects and no increase in blood pressure that could be related to Dexedrine. Starting Dexedrine did not change my blood pressure, much to the surprise of my GP.
I would really like to experience mental peace and genuine concentration and normalness, or whatever effects this stuff causes...the only concern I have is I am wondering if, being that it is a drug, it could be potentially dangerous.
If you take these drugs and you dont' need them, they ARE dangerous, not just potentially. For me, they restore my neurotransmitters to a state or normality, in people without ADHD they force their systems into an *abnormal* state. Bare in mind that we are talking about the very systems in your brain that make you who you are. If you do not need this drug for ADHD you risk slipping into psychosis, *especailly* if you do not have a trained professional watching over you.
You are getting into the realm of party drugs and as such, unles you have an absolute knowledge of the source o the drug you take huge risks. If you didn't take it from a bottle which had the manufactureres label on it, you have no way of knowoing what is actually in that capsule.
You are asking us to help you rationalize sometthing which you yourself are VERY unsure of. If you cannnot concentrate, and you have major organizational problems, you may well have ADHD. In that case, do one of the sefl-diagnosing tests you can find on the Internet do ti and take the results to your doctor and ask for a referral to someoen who can accurately diagnose you. It will be well worth your tiem and effort.
Those who have chosen your route have difficulties later on if any doctor finds out what you have done. The first thing they are going to think is that they have a potential addict in their care. I hate giving dire warnings.. but in this case.. .consider this a dire warning.
Trust me, it always feels better to do things facing forward instead of bass ackward!
cheers,
katatak
2Busy2Think 02-16-06, 02:23 PM You shouldent have taken half of the pills. Do your research online at least, sheesh. The beads contain different drugs, so you got inadequate amounts of different drugs. The feeling you got this time will not be the same as if you get a script for it.
