Does anyone have any info on the medication Buspar? My doctor is thinking about putting me on it. Thanks for any info.

Honey, don't.
I was on Buspar and it did diddly squat! 90% of people who have tried it say it sucks. To be honest, it's probably going to be a waste of time. I'm assuming if it did work it wouldn't be very efficient.

I took I think it is very good because it is so mild that you cant get addicted to it and it dosent get you high. I just takes away enough anxiety so that you can have a good time when you do stuff.

I took it about ten years ago for anxiety (before I was diagnosed with ADD), and it helped tremendously. It took the edge off without taking away my drive to compete (I was in law school at the time so I couldn't lose all my anxiety). I didn't "like" it as much as I like Valium or Xanax, but with my addictive personality, that's a good thing.

Thanks for everyones input, i've been on it for about 2 weeks and I can notice a difference. I think it needs more time to get into my system but it seems to take the edge off for me. But most of my problem is that the meds work for a little bit and then they dont affect me later on. Has anyone else had this problem??

my new doc decided that i do not have add(after 3 years of being treated for it) and he put me on Buspar for anxiety. It has only been 3 days but I have had headaches and terrible muscle pain. Concentration is terrible. I feel like a wet dishcloth. Excuse my southern expression but I am a Zombie on 5 mgs of Buspar. I hope these side effects stop.

I hope it gets better for you too. The only problem I've had with the Buspar is that it makes me very very sleepy for about 2hrs after I take it, but after that I'm cool and calm. I'm on 15mg a day. I would wait a couple more days and see how you are then.

I was just prescribed Buspar for anxiety, since my occasional Neurontin wasn't doing very much. I have Xanax, but obviously don't want to be taking that regularly (it's my plane and dentist drug). Does anyone have any recent Buspar experiences? CrazyMeds.org just has like one line saying it's fine if you're taking an anti-depressant (which I am).

I hate starting new drugs. I'm always worried there'll be horrible freaky side effects like spontaneous combustion or something that'll only happen to me.

I was prescribed it but I only took it during my psycho pms time which was about a week per month. It's pretty mild and it doesn't seem to affect my other medications at all. Now I just take it when I realize that I have been raging all day because of hormones and I don't want to totally destroy family relatiionships.

I took it for a week, then quit. It gave me terrible insomnia, which did not help my anxiety. Back to just Neurontin. :(

I find buspar good for my anxiety, but as other says my doctor told me that is only effective in about 40% of patients.

I wanted something mild to go along with my ritalin to help bring me down at night.

My nero also instructed me that you have to take it for a few weeks for it to take effect.

Buspar made me feel drunk. Not as much mentally as physically. Seemed to counter my ADD meds some too.

it doesn't come close to Xanax. I think Doctors are putting people on Klonipin now. I don't take it but my husband does and it helps him a lot. When he does not take Klonipin I can barely live with him.

Well I just started buspar today (generic actually) and I am hoping it will help. I have never been on anything for anxiety but I definitely have had major anxiety my whole life. I've just decided its affecting my life enough that I have to have help dealing with it. I have a 9 month old son and I feel bad because he always seems to bother me and I am too irritable to sit down and play with him, etc. When something is affecting my son I have to get help. I hope I am one of those 40% that it helps because I feel like I'm bothering my doctor or that maybe she thinks I am just trying to get drugs. I think I'm just being paranoid but I just want to find the right combination of meds so I can enjoy life for once!

I like Buspar very much. I've been on it for about a month now and take 20mg/day (two doses of 10mg). I tried about 4 flavors of SSRI and hated the fuzzy feeling and side-effects. Benzodiazepines are junk too because they have this muscle relaxing feeling that I despise (keep in mind I have generalized anxiety but I still hate that sloppy feeling in my system).

Over the first couple weeks sometimes I would get a nauseous feeling here and there with Buspar. It's one of the more common side-effects. That lasted about a week then went away. Also it's starting to keep my anxiety about 80% at bay (it was never that bad but I'd get chest pains from the anxiety... since I started taking Buspar they have lessened quite a bit).

I would at least give this a try because I like it way better than Benzos or SSRIs. For the record I take non-XR generic amphetamine of 20/mg/day as well (also two 10mg doses). It's kind of funny that I feel better now after seeing my PCP. I was working with shrinks and doing the DSM-IV and ink blots and all this other crap then I quit taking meds because I started to feel better. I quit dosing for about a year (and drank more to deal with it) but then my anxiety was really starting to nag at me, especially when I was trying to go to sleep... bigger chest pains. I feel about 90% now and although not perfect I'm more in balance than I have been in a few years I'd say.

I still like to have a couple bourbon & diets per day but I've noticed that drinking on Buspar makes me feel quite a bit more trashed/tired. I'd suggest cutting any drinking in 1/2 at the very least. This never affected me that much with SSRIs or benzos but for some reason I react a lot harder to booze when I'm on Buspar.

Sorry to spam but another thing about Buspar that's kinda weird is that even though it's similar to SSRIs it's in a different class. It acts as a mixed agonist/antagonist on postsynaptic dopamine receptors... I think it's related to motor skills and such and they don't really know why it seems to work on anxiety. Thought I'd throw that in there beyond the Wiki statements.
