View Full Version : What did y'all start off with initially?
mskitty81 03-02-06, 07:43 PM Hey y'all! I was just diagnosed with ADD/NOS by my psychologist. She is recommending that I begin with medication and therapy to help me with life. Anyways, I was wondering what y'all started out with? I know all physicians are different, but I'd like to know. Also, I have been on medication for anxiety(not anymore), and because of that, I refuse to take any drug that takes two weeks to work, and if you leave town for the weekend and forget the meds..sick as a dog!!! Ayways, I was just wondering what y'all initially began with?
dwightbean 03-02-06, 08:36 PM i started off with ritalin and moved on to concerta. it's working well as of now. probably better now than the first week i was on concerta.
mskitty81 03-02-06, 08:40 PM why are you better now than your first week of concerta? What did it make you feel like?..is Concerta one of those medications that take a little while, until they are fully in your blood stream to work??
Hyperion 03-02-06, 10:01 PM I started out with adderall and am still taking it, although we have adjusted the dose a few times over the past year and a half. I also recently switched from IR tabs to the XR version. My dosage is a little different than some people's, however, as I also take it at night to deal with insomnia because ironically it is the only thing that consistently allows me to calm down, focus, and go to sleep.

goodoboy 03-02-06, 11:32 PM I started with Cylert (Pemoline). I never had any problems and felt it really helped me. I was taking Pemoline for three years. I took 2 pills in the morning and one at noon. Also two Welbrutin in the morning.
Unfortunatly Cylert has recently been taken off the market recently due to possible liver damage. I was tested every six months for signs of liver damage but always the tests came back negative.
Now I'm taking two Welbrutan and one Ritalin in the morning and then one ritalin no later than noon.
It's really to early to say if Ritalin is helping as I've only been on Ritalin for two days.
We'll see, time will tell!

dwightbean 03-02-06, 11:46 PM no.. not at all. i felt it the first day i was on it. it gave me a rush that lasted for a few hours. my first day on concerta felt a bit the same... it basically felt like a smoother version of ritalin.. but since i hadn't been consistent with ritalin, my first day on concerta was probably the first day i felt my stimulant at it's full force throughout the day. i was chatty, mildly euphoric, and i could easily focus and sort my thoughts out in an organized way.
i think over the past few weeks the intensity of the drug has worn off.. which to me is a nice thing. although i know i'm far more focused than i am off it, i feel like i've regained the normal-sensing self that i usually am. i also think i've had to rearrange how i approach daily activities.. and it's been a bit of a learning experience. i now know i can do things just by telling myself to do it.. i don't necessarily have to wait for a sudden impulse to get me going.. nor do i have to fear that i might jump away from my tasks at any given moment. the idea that i can do whatever i plan to do-- on command-- is quite a privilege that i haven't gotten used to yet.
so that's it. it's only week 2.. so i guess i still have to wait and see what else might come my way.

Allison78 03-03-06, 10:20 AM I started on Ritalin, but didn't like the anxious/depressed feelings I got when a dose wore off. I talked to my doctor about this, and he tried me on Focalin (same thing) and then Concerta. For some reason, that doctor was intent on ONLY prescribing methylphenidate, and kept trying me on different forms of that even though I felt it just wasn't the right med for me. I've switched doctors and am now taking dexedrine.
Adderall.... still trying to get the dosage right. Was misdiagnosed with BP at the age of 16. Been on almost every Anti-dep... Adderall was started with a low dosage to make sure I didn't go Manic. Am on 20 a day for now and can actually focus and perform things that I've never been able to do before. Go to see the doc again on Monday to hopefully increase the dosage again. Started with 5 then 10 in am and 5 at noon, now am 10 in am and 10 at noon. So, I guess we'll see.
At 5 I felt nothing and got very frustrated
At 15 I began to notice things
At 20 I am starting to feel more, I can actually remember to close those cabinet
doors, atleast more than before.

I'll be on ritalin LA soon, and I hope the effects your feeling from concerta are similar to what it will do for me. Concerta is very expensive in Aus (up to $130+ a month depending on mg's). My psychiatrist called it the longest lasting version of ritalin, and because of that the peaks are much smoother than standard ritalin tablets.
I started on reboxatine (edronax) which I 'spose you could call the poor man's strattera. It works in a similar way to strattera but costs me $4.60 a month as opposed to $140 a month. Big difference. I was told it could take anywhere from a month to 8 weeks to hit full effect. It's been 4 months now and while it's helping my depression like nothing else has (it's listed in aus as for major depression) it hasn't done anything for mu focusing. Infact I think some of my add traits are worse now: especially my temper.
A script for Ritalin LA is being arranged for me at the moment. I think I'll be starting on ritalin tablets to sort out the dosage level and then move to ritalin la.
Momofadder 03-03-06, 05:52 PM My son started on Strattera, then on to Focalin XR, and now is on Wellbutrin XL. Finally doing well, not perfect, but much better. Good luck!
