View Full Version : New word to describe ADD?

I was just talking to my son (who has severe ADD) and he said he wished we could come up with a better descriptive term for it - because he said he hates calling it a "disorder" and the way it's described as "distracted". He sees ADD as a benefit in many ways, and his brilliance and creativity do shine through.

He wants a word that's complimentary to describe how the ADD mind works - but he didn't like "unique" because it sounded like bragging that we were better than others, and he didn't like "different" because it sounded like a put-down.
Any ideas?

*breaks out the dictionary*....damnit where is the dictionary!

do we have to reword it so instead of attension deficit disorder it has to be a word beginning with a, d and d or can we completely change it?

cause i'm finding it a lil differcult i've got:

Active, Determined sometimes Hectic....erm...inDividuals

yeah....i got alot of fine tuning to do lol

ok...yeah i'm no good at this lol, i'll keep trying though

and yeah i agree, i hate the word 'disorder'

I can see where he's coming from..."attention defecit" is really the worse way to describe it - if anything, we have an attention surplus!!! If only we had more control over where we focused it :p

As for "disorder", I'm not keen on that either - I like how Hartmann describes it as a "genetic difference". if you reall want to go down the medical / scientific route, I think "syndrome" is maybe better.

Attention surplus syndrome? Hmmm....maybe not - I don't think the acronym would catch on ;)

"Distinctive"...I just ran it by him and he likes it. "Distinctive thinkers" he put it. I would like it if it was used like this - Attention Surplus Distinction.
No disorder, no syndrome. Just like that. :D
Let's all start calling it ASD, get the new name to catch on, then docs will have to change it, and all the goombahs too :p

DX - you're so creative! I love how you come at the question, trying to make it fit the ADD initials. But, no it doesn't need to be like that - he just needs a good term to use for the answer to questions like, "How does the ADD brain work differently?"

I'm not sure I like the acronym though. "SIN?" Makes it seem bad. I have SIN I guess I'll go to hell for it ;) :( ...

The true basis of ADD...as explained in another thread, is the AEON strain.

Advanced Engineering & Optimization of Neural biochemistry

Used this acronym at your own risk....beware of Project Aeon censors.

Which thread? where is it? the grandiose theory one? I'm too gullible to play tricks on kokomo!!!

Kokomo

It was the grandiose theory one...but the "censors" already deleted it. It was NOT likely deleted by a moderator, unless the PA has infiltrated the mods...it was a PA security specialist.

what does PA stand for?

I was explained in the grandiose thread...Project Aeon. BUt it's safer to use the PA moniker...they trace keywords typed..,,;)

Lettie always has the cutting edge avatars...wonder if they'll ask her to remove that one...that's arguably more offensive than the cowboy text, but it cracks me up!!

chameleon
03-26-06, 02:17 AM
But what's PA???

Lettie's only saying she rides the short bus - not all of us. I think it would be a huge infringement on the right to express one's self for them to make her remove it!

Kokomo
03-26-06, 02:19 AM
I don't disagree about the right to express, but I thought her cowboy text was Lettie's personal expression too.

Oh me too :)

(sorry btw, just noticed this read-through that you already answered the PA question).

You know how Lettie is though, she can't turn right or left without offending someone :p

I think it has something to do with those chaps she wears...

LMAO...that is Lettie...she cannot walk into a China shop without knocking at least one plate over...but I think that's why we love her!

I never thought "attention surplus" quite got to the heart of it, so I started calling it Inertia Surplus Disorder (to myself). It's still got "disorder" on the end, but if someone wants to play with it, they can feel free.

chameleon

You're absolutely right Kokomo! That's why we love her!
Well...that and because she'll beat me up if I don't.

i fell asleep sry :(

how could i forget this place, it's litterally the only place i can relate to other people and pretty much it's the only place people actually listen...without using it to riddicule me later lol

well with this particular assignment i've failed it once before because i started the night before and ended up doing it three times, 2 times were me helping mates and explaining the code and such and the other time was for me....unfortunately i started it at 6am on the day it was due and the lack of sleep took a toll a lil, the good news though the mates that i helped they not only passed the assignment i helped them revise and they passed the exam too! :D

That's funny, I fell asleep today too. At my computer while Lettie kept typing "Where the hell are you???".
I'm pretty sure she's resting up for my a** whoopin'.

You're such a good friend to help your "mates" so much DX! I don't know anyone as nice as you.
Yeah...let's move this topic from you being nice to my pitifulness. Isn't everything ultimately about me anyway?
Me me me. Poooor me!!!!!
