Our news headlines:( a group of about 13 ,12-13 year olds from the same country high school all were taken to hospital yesterday after taking large amounts of ritalin!

The aparantly took as many as 13 pills at one time , what stregnth I am not sure, and when they got racing hearts, and went dizzy, they panicked , an ambulances came to take them to hospital..

it was on every TV channel last night....it didn't say what happened after that, and if they got sent home etc...

There was an interview this morning with an expert in medicines who said the ADD medications have such a small amount of stimulants in them, they would need to take heaps to hurt themselves!!

Kids! Always up to something. It makes me wonder, though, how they got their hands on so much Ritalin? Hope it doesn't have a negative impact in general on the need for these kinds of medications, though.

It is a little alarming. One wonders where they got that much ritaliin... it sounds like someone's monthly prescription went up all at once....

The end effect could be that the media will hyperfocus on it and we will end up with even tighter controls on stimulants.....

ME :D

Let's take a step back:

It's alarming. One wonders how stupid a 12 year old needs to be to swallow a dozen ritalin pills. What? Did you think it was gonna be "fun"? I mean, honestly....

You'd think that parents today would do the whole "abusing prescription drugs is bad" routine with their kids, wouldn't you? How about drug education in schools? Maybe? No?

I BET it is something I would have done as a teenager if the opportunity arose:( :( :(

More drug education after student Ritalin overdoses

The Queensland Government says more will be done to educate school students about drugs after 14 pupils overdosed just north of Brisbane yesterday.

The students at Narangba Valley High became violently ill after consuming the drug Ritalin, which is prescribed for people with behavioural disorders.

Police have questioned a teenage girl who allegedly took the pills to the school and shared them with friends.

Education Minister Rod Welford says there could have been fatal consequences.

"Clearly, none of the students fully appreciated the significance or the consequences that could occur when this happens," he said.

"We need to obviously get that message out to all students about the risks involved, but obviously the school will be working with police to identify what caused this situation and ensure it doesn't happen again."

Ten girls and four boys from year nine took an overdose of Ritalin during their lunchbreak.

Witnesses say some of the students took as many as 15 tablets.

Teachers were alerted to the problem when the group began suffering severe side-effects and concerns were raised when two affected students went missing for a short time.

Most of the students have since been discharged from hospital, but police are still investigating where the drugs came from.
