I did really well at my GCSE's in high school and now i am in my second year of college and it is unbelievaly hard!! Obviously the work load is more but it is very hard for me 2 be able 2 do the homework. I have never been able 2 read things which dont capture my imagination staright away, but when doing English Literature its kinda nessecary and then u get stuck. I have 2 read set texts which are quite frankly **** but that is part of the course. I have developed methods to overcopme this, for example i will watch the film of the book getting an accurate adaptation. This has helped but i still have huge problems with coursework deadlines. Does anyone else here feel the same way about their college/university work??

I have the same reading problem. If the book doesn't interest me it takes me forever to just read one page. But last month I read "Prozac Nation" in three days. I was very interested in that book and could not put it down.

I am sorry I do not have any advice though. I am trying to overcome the same thing. Like I told you before Adam, I am a college dropout!! He, he! :)

Well I must say I found Uni a heck of a lot harder than anything before as I felt lost & there was barely any structure, so I gave up after a year (even tho I passed, there were other reasons as well tho). AND that was studying pharmacy which is one of the most structured courses you can do!

College is a LOT more structured in Switzerland than it is in the UK, it's more work & more subjects at a higher level than A-levels in the UK but it's far more like high school in structure etc. so I didn't have too much of a problem overall.

If i had managed 2 keep the structure from high school it wouldnt have been so bad. I never really missed many lessons althouhg i did have a problem of just giving up near the end of a touhg day instead of working until the end. I got really depressed in high school and whilst the college environment has helped make me happier and more at home, the lack of structure, and a sudden case of appendicictis at the begginning of the year messed me up 4 the rest of the time. I am sticking at it altough it is sooooo hard!! A little more structure early on would have gone a long way mind u.

I had trouble with Calculas until a guy said "David, you are smart enough to do this, but you tell ourself ou don't lke it. just go nuts the other way. don't dread your calc homework, tell yourself you can't get enough, you are dieing to do it, it has to be first. you can't wait.

I bought in for short period and it work weel. then I had an honesty crisis. Now I understand it in a diffeerent way. its like getting a toddler to go running out the door with you, to nowhere special... just like it is exciting. It works.

Yeah that's a great point! I mean when I was thinking about going to Uni, there were LOTS of subjects that would have interested me, but to be honest part of why I chose pharmacy was simply BECAUSE it was relatively well-structured.

You had a set timetable (unlike other subjects, where you had to mix & match your lectures), set subjects (you could specialise later but mostly, you had a set mix of lectures), fixed dates for exams and practically everything else was highly regulated.

Whereas other subjects, in the Uni catalogue of the University of Basel, I was already totally overwhelmed trying to get my head around how you're supposed to choose your subjects and put your lectures together in something akin to a timetable

I initially went to college a psych major, but I took one class, became overwhelmed by the boring-ness (is that a word? well, it is now!) of the text, the "teacher" was a complete doofus (a very vocal class shared its agreement with this assessment of him) and frankly, the whole experience turned me off.

Now, after being Dx'd with ADHD, and a lotta other "life stuff" molding me into who I am today (and who I'm becoming), I'm going back to what my heart originally told me to pursue: degrees in which I can counsel others--specifically, ADDults.

My advice is to search your heart--What would you do for free? The book ADD in the Workplace... by Kathleen Nadeau might also be a good read for you to help you determine your options/directions. You're still in school, so you still have some time to "play with your plan."

However, if you "used to know" and now aren't sure because it's "so hard" and will take longer to achieve, I propose that you re-evaluate the reasons it's hard.

Structure can be created, although for us ADDers, it's terribly difficult--we're just not wired that way. Are there student services available to you? Perhaps you could connect with a school advisor/counselor to assist you in setting up a study schedule and who would also help you to be accountable to it. "Peer Coaching" on these Forums might be of help here, although we would only be "in your face" as much as you're online allowing us to be there to help and encourage you.

Once I begin my MS program, I know I'm going to have to find one of those timers Wheel was talking about to structure my studies...I procrastinate WAAAAAYYY to easily.

We have to identify our specific weaknesses when it comes to college. Once they're identified, we MUST demand of ourselves that we NOT succumb to them, but instead find ways to do more than cope--to defeat them.

I ask myself: How badly do I want this?

My answer is all I need to keep me going.

I thought that line was from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

Prick us do we not bleed
Wrong us, shall we not revenge?

Thats true. Also Data in Star Trek The Next Generation said this when he was being threatened with being dismantled and taken away by that Luitenant.

BigDaddy,

you are a man of my heart -- able to recall Star Trek episodes at will - me too. How can we ADDers have such lously short-term memory and such phenomenal long term memory?

As I recall, the guy who wanted to disassemble Data was Commander Bruce Maddox (played by Brian Brophy).

I'll make it a point to read more of your posts -- anyone who can quote Shakespeare AND Commander Data possesses a mind worth knowing!
