I was looking on the internet about how to improve concentration, and I found a lot of websites pushing Hypnotherapy CDs. I guess you listen to them in your sleep every night, and its supposed to improve your concentration, confidence, self worth, or whatever CD you buy.

Has anyone ever heard of this type of thing before? Any experience with it? I am considering trying a few CD's, but I want to ask opinions first...

I've heard of it but never tried it. Sounds like the Matrix movie to me - where Neo gets programs uploaded into his brain - "I know Kung Fu".
Sounds too good to be true?
I'd be interested to know if you see any concrete results if you try it.

It sounds kin to the subliminal messages they sold years back……besides why would I want to increase my concentrate in my sleep? My focusing problems are annoying when I am awake…….the results were "inconclusive" as far as effectiveness. I think they helped a small percentage of people but do does a “placebo”! I don’t buy it myself tried the quitting smoking ones way back when and I saw no improvements. .I still smoke…..in the other hand listening to the tapes didn’t increase my smoking!

Hypnosis and sleep learning have been hyped for years with little evidence that they are useful for concentration or learning.

The US Dept. of Defense commissioned an evidence-based review of performance enhancing techniques in the 1980s. They looked at many systems. They wanted to enhance soldier competence, decision-making abilities, combat preformance and to help speed learning and readiness.

All of the trendy techniques fell by the wayside as having marginal effects if any. You name it, alpha-wave enhancing bio-feedback machines, hypnosis, subliminal night-time learning, Neuro-linguistic programming (the fire-walk guy seminars).

Aerobic exercise was found to be the best way to enchance recovery from psychosocial stress, and physical practice was found to be the quickest and most effective way to maximize performance.

But hypnosis can be fun... when you hypnotize others. ;)

Oh, and remember the claim : flashing a 'drink coca cola' message briefly durning a movie viewed by unsuspecting moviegoers will make many of them get up to purchase a coke = subliminal message.

This is False, and was based on invented data, see subliminal (http://www.snopes.com/business/hidden/popcorn.asp)
