I noticed on the instructions for my adderall that it said to avoid large amounts of caffeine bc it will increase the side effects. I have some questions about that-

How much caffeine is a "large amount?"

What do they mean when they say it will increase side effects - increase the number of them? Increase the strength of the ones you already have?

Thanks!

Sometimes when I drink coffee after my Adderall dose, I feel sleepy. But not always.

Depends. Basically, they tend to interact. Caffeine may exacerbate the side effects, induce new side effects, or even eliminate some side effects altogether. Generally though, it will make the side effects worse or induce new ones.

I've found I don't enjoy my morning coffee quite as much and when I first started taking Adderall, I did feel a little shakey or felt heart racing with coffee.

I still drink coffee, but I don't always finish that first cup and almost never go for a second.

When I started Adderall about five months ago, my doctor insisted that I give up caffeine. At the time, that amounted to an 8-10 per day Diet Coke habit and often a triple latte on my way in to work. I was probably self-medicating before Adderall to try to counteract some of my ADD symptoms.

I didn't listen to him in the beginning and kept drinking caffeine. The side effects I had (headache, freezing hands and feet were the worst) would worsen when I drank caffeine. I also would get light-headed and sleepy for a while after drinking it. When I started backing off it, I could tell a huge difference. These issues got worse with each increase in Adderall dosage, I started at 15mg 2x daily and now I'm up to 30mg 2x daily.

I've learned to live without caffeine, although I will drink it when a restaurant has no other choice. Caffeine Free Diet Coke is my new best friend.

If I have caffeine now, I get a bit jittery (hands tremble and I feel all shaky inside), but I do get a major burst of energy. It's amazing how much impact it has after you kick the habit then re-introduce it to your body.

FYI, I feel much better without drugging myself with caffeine all day, every day. Adderall works much better! :D

Large amount depends on what you're accustomed to taking in every day usually Tinkerbelle. I would imagine it would be around 3 cups of coffee or more.
There are lots of items that have caffiene that you may ingest regularly and not be aware of this, such as light colored sodas, chocolate -icecreams/candy, coffee ice creams, supplements, teas etc.
Generally its not a good idea to add more stimulants to your prescribed stimulant bc it can make your side effects like nausea, loss of appetite, heart racing and jitteryness far worse.
When I first started taking Wellbutrin (I'm off of it now) I tried to drink the ice tea that I normally drink -casually and randomly and found myself seriously sick feeling since I drank more ice tea then I realized b/c I was so thirsty...I felt horrible. It made me feel super queasy.
I just recently started taking Adderall again and I'm absolutely avoiding my morning Red Bull. I stopped coffee about a year and half ago and decided I would do only one Red Bull a day for the caffiene but I quit b/c of Adderall.
So....
I would get rid of any extra stimilating additives/drugs
perhaps add on your coffee or whatever you're used to once you acclimate to your adderall.

I guess my caffeine intake now is going to be decaf green tea and chocolate - I seem to be able to handle that w/no real side effect problems other than a little very mild increase in heart rate.

i can have like 1 diet coke a day or every other day. If I have more caffeine than that, my heart races and I get realllly jittery, sometimes a little paranoid. I've always been sensitive to caffeine, but Adderall has really increased it.
