View Full Version : Fantastic short article that takes away procrastination
chameleon 04-14-06, 06:10 PM Overcoming Procrastination (http://www.dexterity.com/articles/overcoming-procrastination.htm) article.
Here are the highlights -
Replace the words "I have to" with "I want to" to get rid of the rebellion you feel inside when a task is looming.
Replace the words "Finish it" with "Begin it". Seeing the task in pieces instead of as an unmanageable whole.
Replace perfectionism with permission to be human. Perfectionism may be holding you back from beginning tasks.
Replace deprivation with guaranteed fun. By scheduling fun things first, as top priorities, tasks become more important to you and you WANT to get them done.
Use timeboxing. Promise yourself a reward after, say, 30 minutes of work. You'll be thinking of the reward during the task, and you can stand anything for 30 minutes.
The article is much more in depth, and short, easy reading.
I have definately learned some great tricks! Now I'm off to get spend 30 minutes starting a task, because I WANT to! :D
chloe516 04-14-06, 06:14 PM I need to print this out in poster size and frame it! I procrastinate soooooo bad!
You moved yet?!? ;)
chameleon 04-14-06, 06:29 PM Working on it. Husband is actually slowing it down now. I'm all foaming at the mouth and ready. I got in trouble last night for having packed up kitchen stuff. :(
chloe516 04-14-06, 06:32 PM men! :soapbox:
Well, if you were supposed to move today, makes sense to pack kitchen stuff. We always do take out on the day before and day of, and day after moves.
chameleon 04-14-06, 06:35 PM I KNOW! I was working so hard because I wanted to make him proud of me when he got home and saw how much packing I managed to get done - and he yells at me for it!
chloe516 04-14-06, 06:49 PM :( Hugs!!!!! (is that xxxxx or ooooo??? I can never remember!?!?!?!~!!)
DimensionX 04-14-06, 07:33 PM hugs = o
kisses = x
thats musta sucked cham :(
chloe516 04-14-06, 07:37 PM hugs = o
kisses = x
Thanks! I thought hugs were x because your arms cross when you hug, and kisses o because your mouth kind of makes that shape, but I know I always get it wrong, so I think you're right! Makes more sense my way though!;)
DimensionX 04-14-06, 07:43 PM ....ur right!, it does *gasp*
we should get someone to change it universally!
...don't know how to go about doing that though lol
chloe516 04-14-06, 07:47 PM hehehe :D :p Maybe if we start doing that here, it'll catch on!!! There's a children's book called Frindle where the characters start calling a pen a "frindle" and it works! Maybe if we start doing that everyone else will change!!! :D ;)
I was going to open the link but I didn't really want to read anything right now. :)
You know...there's always tomorrow, Scuro.
Nova (hee heeeeeeee -just couldn't resist)
DimensionX 04-15-06, 12:05 AM argh!, mental note: read thread title before making jokes....
i tried a few of them but it proved to no avail so far, i'll keep trying though :D
Oh...brother...good thing I had time to edit my reply to you.
Otherwise it would've been 'stuck' on here, and wouldn't have made ANY sense to anyone !!
You crack me up !!!
DimensionX 04-15-06, 12:11 AM lol, same here with my joke :D

Now, back to procrastinating and reading the forums! ;)
Maybe I need to read the article again...:eyebrow:
Princess-of-Chaos 05-05-06, 07:07 AM Although I'm always a bit suspicious about those "fix-it-articles", this one has really helped me!
Maybe because it exactly addresses the problem I have:
Forcing myself to do things, heavily punishing me when I do not succeed and even when I do, making things worse by saying:
Oh, that was so easy... you are so bad you can't do it all the time like that... from now on, you'll do the double amount every day!
Of cause, that's not really encouraging.
Well, somehow I just understood something when reading this article.
Thank you very very much!
chameleon 05-05-06, 11:17 AM I'm so glad you found it useful crime_scene and piaszw :)
The one about saying "I want to..." instead of "I have to..." integrated itself really fast into my behavior and mind!
Now I need to reread it to remember what the others were :D
