I wasn't sure how to phrase this without sounding odd, but here it goes!

Does anyone else hear voices? I'm not talking in the schizophrenic sense where the voices are telling you things, I mean like if you are thinking about something someone said, it's not in your voice (like usual thoughts) but their voice.

For example, I'm working on leveling books right now (looking at books and grouping them by how difficult they are to read). When I am looking at the book to think about the level, I can hear the voice of the last child I taught that book to.

Also, if I watch the movie version of a book before reading it, I hear the voice of the actor. Like when I read Gone With the Wind I heard Vivian Leigh's voice for Scarlett and Clark Gable's voice for Rhett Butler.

Anyone else do this?

if u mean that when reading a book or something ur thoughts reading the text impersonate or make up characters then yeah

don't think i've had the film one though

although i have read the books to things then watched the film and think thats not right! the character should be like this! and then think about the alternative :D

I do those things too. (my students love it when I read because I do a different voice for each character and even do accents! not always good at it, but I try!;):D ) The hardest is trying to do an accent in a male voice. Not easy to make my voice deeper while concentrating on trying to do the accent well!

But if I hear someone else read the book or if I see the movie first and hear an actor say those parts, I cannot make up my own voice, it's the one I've already heard...

You know how when you are thinking, you are hearing your own voice? I wouldn't be thinking and have it be in my sister's voice??? When I am thinking about something someone else has said, I hear it in their voice, not mine. Just like if they were right there saying it...

not sure if I'm explaining it well, but I'm trying...

Yes. When I'm reading lecture notes, I "hear" the words in the lecturer's voice including their accent, but not all the time.

Chloe,
Yes. I hear things this way in my head sometimes.

Problem (?) is, if I'm too involved (hyperfocused?) in thinking about the conversation (or whatever) I begin to answer back--OUT LOUD! How big of a doofus does that make me?:D Most of the time there's no one else around. Times when there are--I just let them think I'm a bit "touched".:p It keeps my students wondering, just a bit.

be well,
tristan;)

I hear this way all the time though...

I talk to myself a lot too, especially when I'm stressed :o Haven't come up with a clever reason to tell people yet. Luckily I haven't said anything too loud, usually it's just mumbling under my breath!

Since I hear the voices so clearly, I sometimes get confused about whether the person is actually there if I am hyperfocused on my thoughts...:eyebrow:

I have a very good auditory memory & every memory comes in the voice that I originally heard it.

I realize they aren't there really quickly, it's not like I lose touch with reality, its just like having a vivid dream and you're suddenly coming out of it and it takes a minute to reorient yourself.

I must say, it makes reading much more interesting and fun! ;)

Could it be that, after all, the brain truly does actively work to be "entertained"? :p (Even at our expense? :eyebrow: )

I also *hear* the voice of the characters in a movie, if I've watched it, prior to reading the book(s).

Same with reading a news/magazine article- if I'm familiar with the individual's voice, who either wrote it, or had written a quote in it.

As for reading new fictional books, I create what I 'think' they would sound like in my mind- and that character will *sound* like that throughout the entire book.
I don't do that with non-fictional books.

i often just listen to scrubs as i'm doing work, i can picture it all in my mind, yet with reading i always remember the voice of the person that said it, or make up a characters voice.

....was gonna write more but i've completely forgottern what the thing was called of which i needed to mention to write the rest.....how irritating.

Not sure if this is the same thing, but I have on a number of occasions distinctly heard my mother calling my name (shades of Samuel for the religiously-inclined :P) only to find 1)she's nowhere around or 2)she emphatically insists she didn't.
But yeah, whenever I think back on something someone said, I hear their voice, right down to their intonation/inflexion of voice etc. When I read anything, there's always a different voice for each character, each writer etc-- although usually I get a sense of a voice rather than actually hearing it, I dont really 'sound out' the words in my head-- not sure how to put it.

This happens to me all the time.. I hear things my grandparents told me in my head, my parents, friends.. everything..

Then when reading nothing is in my voice.. It's almost like most of my thoughts aren't mine because none of it is in my voice..

I do this all the time. My son is constantly asking - "What did you say?" and I didn't even realize I had spoken out loud.:D

I hear my own voice when iread. or if I read a book that has a movie I hear the characters voice from the movie.

In a creepier scenario I"ve often thoht I've herd my name spoken or people speaking when there is no one around. (the sound is muffled adn I can't tell what's being said and it only lasts a moment but it 's very strange"

In a creepier scenario I"ve often thoht I've herd my name spoken or people speaking when there is no one around. I often hear my name also. There's a very good reason for it, though. You have a much lower "threshold" for your name, so any sound that is ambiguous, but sounds something like it, will be perceived as your name.

An example of threshold is what's called "the cocktail party effect". It involves two principles: the first is that you are able to selectively attend to the conversation you're having despite the noise of other conversations. The other is that, if someone across the room says your name, you will suddenly tune in.

Maybe we think we hear our names, because when we were growing up all we heard was "Tim, go clean your room. Tim, did you hear me. Tim, please listen to me. I'm only going to tell you once more, Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim ...." :D

My kids sometimes answer me. They don't really get yet (at least the little one doesn't) that such an answer could be construed as backtalk!

I talk to myself a lot too, especially when I'm stressed

Ditto! I also will talk out loud to my self if I am trying to make a “moral” decision. I have done this sense childhood….I vividly remember literally talking myself out of going shop lifting with friends. Shoplifting didn’t sound like as good of an idea when I heard myself say it out loud…..

Haven't come up with a clever reason to tell people yet.

I am sorry you must be mistaken I didn’t say any thing

One I commonly use “ Oh did I say that out loud?”

The TV is so loud I was trying to hear myself think.

Practicing for a play.

Trying to re-call the words to a song.

Nah I don’t do these things which is how I have so many come back lines- :o

I have a very good auditory memory & every memory comes in the voice that I originally heard it. /quote]

This happens to me too. I also do this with music. I can “play” just about every song I have ever heard inside my head. This does have the draw back of some times having bits and pieces “get stuck”…. Which can be real annoying.

-- although usually I get a sense of a voice rather than actually hearing it, I dont really 'sound out' the words in my head-- not sure how to put it.

“tempo??? toenation??? “voice” there is such a thing as literary voice when it comes to writing styles but me ADD brain sees fit to apply this to reading as well. :faint:

Frankly I doing it right now with these post. I am listening to classical music through my head phones to drown out Gary’s TV but yes I also get a “sense of tone / voice impression” when I read things posted here.

Kind of took an adjustment the first time I actually spoke over the phone with some I have gotten to know through here! Once I get a person’s voice impression it becomes integrated into their post by my brain, only then do actual auditory voice impressions come with that person’s post! Like when I read an e-mail from my sister her voice is part of it… I hear it but don’t hear it……..okay it is hard to say what I mean!
