So i just recently found otu that I was one of the 85% of ADHDers with a co-existing condition, which I had not known before. I found out that as a child, i had sensory integratyive dysfunction- specifically tactile defensiveness, but not thats just a hypersensitivity and awareness of touch. I liked silky type feeling things as a child, and still do but its not socially acceptable. I also have had a history of bad social skills, and still have problems reading people. I am 20 years old now, but i have a lot of residue and anxiety left over from this and still gain anxiety from it because i dont think it was entirely dealt with. Ive been doing research on it, but I am still confused somewhat about it, and just the effect it has had on my life and my social skills. Has anyone else had an experience with this disorder, words of wisdom or anything you would recomend I should do?
I also forgot i have somewhat of the visual one too, my vision seems to go slower than my head does and that also causes me a lot of anxiety. I have the most impossible time keeping eye contact ever and it just is hell for me to, not only can i not focus on it from the ADHD, but i also cant do it b/c if i try, i get anxiety from it. I recently found out about these 2 conditions from my parents who I guess hadnt told me until now, or at least what these meant, so as much as these bring some light on my condition, it also brings with it a lot of problems and complications.
Tater;
About 20% of those who have adhd have sensory issues. I suppose that qualifies as sensory integration disorder. I have sensory issues, and I was always sensory defensive, mostly auditory and visual stuff was what I was sensitive to. I do remember being on my tiptoes around the house when I was a child, because I hated the texture of the linoleum floor in our house.
I thought I had outgrown it, but my sensory problems were in my face in a big way when I started having troubles with adhd worsening due to a whole bunch of biological and environmental factors.
SID has only recently become recoognized as a disorder. I can see why, because when I tell my doctors I have sensory issues it does not seem to register with them, that I see it as a problem.
The degree to which a person is affected varies, but it appears that a lot of people who had it as a child develop coping strategies and live a more-or-less normal life without knowing they have it. One thing tyhat I have noticed abvout it is that it seems to only affect one sense at a time, but will involve all the senses over the course of time.... That is, sometimes oversensitive sense of smell, and other times touch, but not both at the same time, etc. I have read that it is a "blocking" effect due to strong input from one sense overriding the others....
The severe cases have an in-your-face quality that gets a parent's attention when a child routinely melts down in spectacular fashion when in an overwhelming environment. I suppose a lot of those get blamed on things like autism, adhd, bipolar, schizophrenia, etc.. The trouble is, that you don't need to have any other disorders to have SID. In any case it is changing and doctors now recoognize it as a separate disorder in children. I don't think it is officially recognized as a disorder in adults, but I would expect that to change soon.

My eight year old daughter has adhd and SID. She hates loud noises, has been sick when it has thundered. She used to get so scared.
She also has a thing about lables and seams on her clothes. I have to cut out all the lables and she wears her socks inside out!! She will only wear certain clothes normally loose fitting anything that has elastic around the arms is out!!
She can also hear a wispered conversation from so far away. Nothing escapes her she has ears like a bat!! So we have to be really careful what is talked about.
The thing is loud music is ok as long as she is the one playing it :D
