Has anyone used and had any luck with any of the natural ADD meds on the market today? I couldn't seem to find any threads on here about them. Maybe I'm not looking in the right area. There are a bunch of then on the internet. I am off all meds now due to nasty side effects and would like to try some Natural Meds. I have tried almost all of the scrip ADD meds and have not found one that I am comfortable with.

HTP-5 aka 5-Hydroxytryptophan has been working for me and the side effects have been very small/null. It took me awhile to get used to it. I STRONGLY suggest taking it under a doctors supervision as some people are more sensitive than others to it. Be careful if you take any other supplements. I have to be very careful with what I do now, i.e. absolutely no drinking alcohol, I only have ONE cup of coffee in the morning, no chocolate (I sometimes cheat with the chocolate and have ONE small piece) but it's working marvelously.

I am in the middle of trying the amino acid therapy with my son. I HIGHLY suggest before you go out and purchase amino acids, that you know what you are doing. The amino acids are very senstive and reactive to your own chemistry in your brain. If you pick the wrong one for your chemistry, it's gonna hurt, or leastly, doing nothing, equalling an expesive frustrating venture. We went to a lab that tested his urine neurotransmitter levels, found he was low in dopamine and seratonin levels, among some other things out of normal range, and are going to be prescribed by a physician the CORRECT amino acids, in a correct protocol, to take to balance everything out. It's not necessarily as simple as going out and purchasing one of them, in order to get the results that you can truly get from the amino acids. Some of them, if you read up on them, also cannot be taken long-term without having some possibly serious side-effects that you need to know about before venturing further. The protocol he will be going on is carried out in a stepwise fashion.

Natural medicines and I've used them in the past with reasonably good results but I would suggest you look into anything before you use it!

A friend of mine recently tried the suppliment L-tyrosine with good results. She was skeptical at first, but says it's great! Definitely check with your MD 1st though. Let us know how you make out!

You know, most of the "gimicky" ADHD formulas, are chock full of amino acids and vitamin B's. I suppose you might get a good B supplement and a protien drink that has all the aminos covered, you can't go too wrong overal-healthy-wise.

CrazyGirl hit in on the nail though, check with your doc, as there are some contraindications with most of them, AND read up on any of them that you are interested in taking, as they are often okay short-term, but the safety AND efficacy are questionable for many when you go long term.

Well, I just started taking 5-HTP, and my daily multivitamin has
100% daily value of B6- which activates 5HTP

My bottle says to take ONCE DAILY

I did experience some nausea last night, a few hours after taking it. . .
But I didn't have much to eat w/it.

When I ate something later, after eating, I felt kinda' sick.

I am experiencing, I dunno yet. . . . .
Maybe taking meds & supplements is kinda' pointless . .
I'll let you guys know in a day or so, how I'm doing.

I like to think that I'm happier, and more positve,
and maybe I am (I felt so last night), but we shall see, eh?

Ya, I think the 5HTP, along w/my vitamin supplements is good. I'm also taking cinnamon, why not? haha. .

My mood is elevated and stuff.

Greetings aikiDave, I am looking into the above by Dr. Bate. I do not think that I am allowed to link to him being a commercial site, but if you take the keywords above and do a search, you will come to his site.

As I understand it, it is actually a biofeedback technique that you use while you sleep. He has done quite a bit with biofeedbck, but apparently there are certain frequency waves from a CD you listen to while you go to sleep that help to correct some of the chemical imbalances that affect the neurotransmitters.

Once I get my next paycheck, I will get and try it. I want to reduce/eliminate my use of Concerta and Fluxomine if possible. The other option is to supplement that with a progressive relaxation muscle exercise every morning. I do it and notice a big difference!

I read with interest what everyone has posted here and am familiar with these but no personal experience, except that I do take vitamins, amino acids, and do indulge in sardines every morning (which usually moves other fmaily members to the other side of the house).

Back to the Neuroliminal Brain Training, I have seen some limited postings on it here, but strongly recommend you go to his website and ask him any questions you may have about it. He is pretty good about responding promptly!

Note: I am not connected with him nor am I making an endorsement until I have tried this myself. This method is geared more for children, but according to Dr. Bate, works also for adults but over a period of several months. :)

Yep I'm trying Mentat at the moment-not the same stuff as the links for naturalremedies- but indian ancient medicine.

Interesting stuff about Dr Bates...has anyone tried his cds?...sort of makes more sense about raising the brainwaves levels...reckon my brainwaves are just slighty above the sleep level waves for majority of the day.
Still very sceptically, especially as it is such a repetative sell on his website-plus some of the way the info is written- ie, he mentions he's best friends with a russian sounding vampire slaying doctor, who's an expert on biofeedback(yep this doc's got a website based in florida and its about biofeedback)but this doc may have been involved in some unusual school project called Summer Lane in the the erly 60's-whether this doc is the same guy i dont know.
However on Dr Bates site-he does offer a refund and a 85% improvement of your conditions. Also if you can prove you are on food stamps, benefits, welfare you can get a discount...never seen that before on a website.
Lastly there are 2 yahoo group forums that is moderated by Dr Bates.

Could be clever marketing or completely genuine...

i have been on synaptol for 5 months now combined with a diet of natural foods. I eat alot of fish and have flax-seed oil. I've improved like 4x better than what I was. Alot of people disagree with meds and others disagree with natural products. It always worth trying naturally before taking meds. Natural products have been used for centuries. Meds have been used for maybe 50-60 years its hard to know what the long-term health affects are.

You might want to check out http://www.quackwatch.org
They have a nice long list of treatments that are known to be bogus and an equally long list of things that are suspiciously questionable.

Another useful site is : http://www.mentalhealthwatch.org

The bottom line is; the only thing proven to treat adhd to theraputic levels is medication.

There are things you can do to help make yourself feel better, like get plenty of sleep, eat right and get lots of fresh air and exercise, etc. You ought to be doing those things already.
