View Full Version : How much Adderall is too much?

I seem to require more and more Adderall. I'm now at 60mg and wondering if 80mg will be OK. When I say OK - I mean OK in reality - not just because a Dr says its OK.

I am pretty tolerant to most drugs. It takes alot of Xanax to calm me down, lots of pain killers after surgery etc. I mean "lots". Most drugs in normal doses to nothing for me. I even have to take 3X the normal dose of stomach acid suppression meds.

Has anyone heard of this in anyone else? Is 80mg of Adderall too much? All I can say is that 60mg of Adderall seems to peter out after about 6 hours. Now I am 5'10" and over 200lbs - and exercise a lot. Maybe that has something to do with it. Its just sooooo frustrating.

But instant release adderall is only supposed to last for about 6 hours. Make sure you are not experiencing an increased heart rate and that the adderall is doing its job of keeping you focused. You know you are taking too much when the adderall feels like it is speeding your thoughts up and stuff...make sure it is acting as a stimulant for helping you focus, not to speed you up.

But instant release adderall is only supposed to last for about 6 hours. Right now I've been taking 30mg XR every 3 hours(looking for some overlap) - or 20mg IR every 2 hours (just to see if it worked any better). While the IR works better than the XR - it still only lasts about 6 hours or so - not a very long day.

It doesn't stimulate me at all. I can go to sleep on 30mg XR (if I was tired to begin with) or 20mg IR. Its all definitely not keeping me awake at night. When it focuses me, it works just fine - I just seem to burn through it really quickly.

I do have a bad stomach acid problem (and have for the past 30 years) - and I wonder if thisn't partially inactivating it. When I took Ritalin, however (which isn't acid sensitive) I still needed easily 120-140mg per day. The problem is that its not just stimulants. I seem to burn through most medications that I take or have taken in the past.

Quite strange.

I was on 200mgs Adderall daily, and it still didn't help me.

Doesn't matter what your body size is, dosage isn't equated by that.

Hey Jon,

Just recently I was reading about certain genetic/chemicals and how they affect the metabolism of certain drugs. In kindergarten terms (my terms): some people have the kind of chemical makeup that metabolizes certain drugs very quickly, MOST people have the kind that metabolize avg, and some metabolize very slowly.

Here's the link where I got this info: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/17/AR2006041701274.html?sub=AR

^^^Ditto, Sue.

I've been taking 60mg/day for over 3 years now and it still works fine for me. I do have to take a couple day brake every once in a while though if I've been taking it a lot(like during finals week)

and just about everyone builds up tollerance to xanax & painkillers pretty quickly, so it's not unusual that you would have a tollerance to them. but like Sue said, your chemistry is probably different & you do develop tollerance to drugs much faster.

Thanks, Sue - for the refernence. I believe you have perhaps found it. I may not be an extreme case - but definitely have an issue with drug metabolism, and I'll definitely research it further.

I even remember when I had colonoscopies or endoscopies - the Dr. kept injecting me full of versed and fentanyl ..... nothing! Finally he knocked me out, and of course I still woke up in the middle of a colonoscopy. While it may have been interesting, it was not very pleasant.

I wouldn't be so annoyed with my seemingly growing "tolerance" to Adderall, if it at least lasted longer during the day. Adderall at reasonable doses really works well for me - but just for so short of a time. XR as well. Ritalin too. It seems that its not an issue of taking more at a time, but rather that it goes away rather quickly.

I guess I go to 4 doses a couple of hours apart (15 or 20mgIR). If that doesn't work, then try one of the ritalin-containing XR's with a release system different from Adderall XR (XR's system clearly doesn't work for me).

Thanks again.

jonquiljo, are you on generic adderall or brand name? I used to be on brand name 25mg twice a day and that was perfect. Now I was just switched to generic 25mg (20mg pills and 5mg pills, I take 1 of each in the morning, and 1 of each at night).

I feel it working but it seems to make me feel really weird. It doesn't seem to last for more than a couple of hours, and even then it doesn't really help my focus out. I even tried taking 50mg at once and still no real difference.

Are you on the generic as well? This may be the problem, I am quite sure it is for me.

Perhaps the generics, are simply not as effective as 'The real brand name stuff?'

The brand name stuff:
