Has anyone taken Adderall while pregnant? If so what were the results?? I've been on Adderall and Ritalin for 12 years and want to get pregnant now. I know it's not the best choice but I'm just looking for some advice.

View Full Version : Adderall and Pregnancy Jessica84 04-25-06, 10:27 PM Has anyone taken Adderall while pregnant? If so what were the results?? I've been on Adderall and Ritalin for 12 years and want to get pregnant now. I know it's not the best choice but I'm just looking for some advice. Ann74 04-26-06, 02:18 PM Jessica84, This is just my Dr.'s opinion. As soon as I found out I was pregnant he took me off. I don't know too much about side effects of taking stimulants during pregnancy, but my Dr. said absolutely not so I took his advice. Also, after I had my baby he did not prescribe it again until I stopped nursing. Another thing to think about is that if you have morning sickness, you won't want to take anything!!! Ann JmeB78 05-01-06, 04:21 AM From what I hear the side effects of taking Adderall while pregnant are not good. Might want to check with your doctor though. Lots of luck, Jme Gregster 05-01-06, 11:39 AM I would think that the biggest danger would be due to the increased blood pressure, which can have all sorts of negative effects. Doctors are of course extra cautious when it comes to pregancy related risk, and I would be too! I would think that in most cases, stimulants would not be expecially toxic to a developing baby, but why risk it? Compairing legally prescribed stimulants to illegal methamphetamines (crank) is not a fair compairison - ever, pregnant or not. QueensU_girl 05-01-06, 12:28 PM Amphetamines cause reduced blood flow, so that is an issue, too. Warning people about stimulant use during pregnancy on ADDforums can get users in trouble, so i mostly shut up about it now.N.B. part of BP increases is b/c of the narrowing of the blood vessels. Essentially, the blood has to be pumped thru a skinnier hose. High pressures can cause damage to garden hoses, right? So there is that, as well as reduced blood flow issues. My own mother took Dex while she was pregnant with me for her "MBD". I do wonder if that is possibly one factor in causing my own ADHD. (Although there were others, such as being pregnant and living in second-hand smoke, etc.) Galaxy Girl 05-01-06, 01:43 PM I did not take Adderall during pregnancy (didn't know I had ADD back then) but I did take Wellbutrin (for depression) during my last two pregnancies and also while nursing those two babies. They are now 7 and 5 years old, and are bright, beautiful, happy, very intelligent children. Personally I would not take a stimulant during pregnancy, but I would take an antidepressant again if necessary. PlainlyOrdinary 05-01-06, 03:15 PM as far as i know, there is no conclusive evidence to show that adderall causes pregnancy. and if it does, i'm in trouble! ;) captivagirl 05-02-06, 10:08 AM My friend was in this situation and after she and her doctor talked about the pros and cons of it...the need vs everything else.....she decided no and her doctor was happy... This is what I remember her going through....sorry if I repeat myself...LOL...I was taking care of my other friend's little girls yesterday along with mine and I had 5 under 3 here yesterday......mine is 2, she has 2 1yo twin girls and a 3yo and my neighbor askedme to watch her 10 month old while she ran out to a doc appt....WHEW>..my brain is in dire need of some rest.....;) You will be hard pressed to find an OB/FP any kind of doctor really willing to ok the use of it during pregnacy.....especially in the first trimester when everything is forming..... Antidepressents are usually ok'd bc they (mds) weight the risk of not taking them....the risk to the mother who needs them the most etc......They are usually, most, against the use of them during nursing but there are ways to get around that if you do nurse on them bc you can try to nurse around halflife's and around when it peaks in your system.... Her doctor agreed to prescribe it again around the third trimester but at a much lower dose than her 30mg day (IR)...he said no to the extended release...but she wanted to nurse so she discontinued it until her daughter weaned at a year and is back on it again...She did take Wellbutrin while nursing and that helped somewhat, enough for her..... She told me that her ADD came in handy when her little one was an older infant and toddler bc she was able to relate more to her daughters attention span bc it was short like hers....they fought less....It gave me a good giggle.. I would just sit down and weigh the pros and cons.....but even after that, it will be hard for you to find a doc willing to let you take it while pregant....newly or not..... Good luck......if you would like to chat with my friend let me know and I'll see if she'd be up to it and get you her email......she's currently pregnant with #2 and #3.....LOL esteveze 06-14-06, 09:27 PM I am trying to conceived and still taking Adderall.
