Have some questions about types of drugs and how they work for my son. What can we do as well. I realize the dr needs to be seen but he is on vacation for 2 months!!! with no fill in!!!
My son (11 yrs old) started with 10mg dexedrine spansules-right away said he was so focussed at school then by the end of the week, felt it wasn't working as good. Went to the 15mg. was great!! he was reading books like crazy!! Said he loved reading now and also totally organized his bedroom, all his books at school etc!! He had trouble getting to sleep. We let him stay up a little longer cuz he said he felt he was having much better sleeps once he GOT to sleep. Then 3 weeks into it he was sooo sad at bed time said he didn't know why just felt sad. Started saying he liked himself better without the pill etc. But the next morning he was so eager to take it!!! Said he was finally getting along with the boys at school and they were being nice to him. Anyways, told the dr and he put him on Adderall 20mg. said it lasts longer and he might be asleep before it completely wears off to not get that downer. Tried it then moved to the 25mg. It stopped the downer mood at night but my son says now after 1 1/2 months on it, that he feels he just doesn't have the focus at school, he is trying really hard but he is finding he is loosing his focus and organized ways. Also not into reading anymore either. Says he liked the dexedrind better, but when I reminded him of the sadness he felt so discouraged. I told him sometimes they mix drugs or there might be a different one to try.
Question: can you use the dexedrine with the adderall? Seems like if it is safe that could be the answer??? Any knowledge of this would be greatly appreciated as I am not sure what to do without the ped. in town.I will go the my "new" regular dr. but for now some peace of mind.:)

It is truly not acceptable that you have no doctor to consult for two months. You need to get and MD's advice on what to do next. If you have to see a new doctor for the first time then do that. Do not take advice on medication from the internet, unless your MD agrees.

Oh I wouldn't do anything until I consult a dr. I just wanted some input on meds and if they can be mixed or if you just need to try a whole new one. Thanks for your concern I appreciate it. And yes you are right I cannot believe this pediatrician that my former dr of 15 years referred me to. The other one was not taking new patients. I now have a new dr. sort of, she doesn't really take patients now either cuz she is in a clinic but she will take on my son under this situation. Just wondering how these meds work, and if together.

I agree with MGDAD on the no-doc thing.

I'm not an MD, but my first choice would be a methylphenadate (either Ritalin or Concerta, the latter of which will last all day). These are a different type of stimulant than Adderall & Dex and he may respond quite differently to it.

My own experience: my son was doing quite well on Adderall XR for a couple of months, but eventually developed an angry and brooding disposition (which was quite the opposite of who he is).

We switched him to Concerta a few weeks ago and he immediately responded well to it. Today he continues to function well and is suprisingly experiencing absolutely NO side effects.

There's a possibility your son will have a similar experience; it's worth a try!

Good luck!

Adderal and Dexedrine are both amphetamines. Adderall is a mixture of 5 amphetamine salts, while dexadrine is just dextroamphetamine by itself.

My advice is: Don't mix adderall and dexedrine. Stay with the adderal until you can get your son to the doctor.
