Hi, My son just upped his dose of adderall xr from 5mg to 10 mg. About two weeks later he started having seizure like symptoms. I have read contradicting reports about adderall and seizures. We did an EEG today, and see a neroligest on Tuesday of next week. For now I just feel like I'm going nuts trying to figure this out, or help him in some way. He has been taken off the adderall until we see the doc next. Could 10mg be to much? Has anyone had seizure symptoms after an increase of dose? Please share your story or expirience with me.
Thanks, Jme

That is a very low dose, as these things go. However, if your child had a pre-existing condition, such as undiagnosed epilepsy, then it would be possible that such a dose could cause problems. It is also possible that the Adderall had nothing to do with it, but given the timing it does seem somewhat likely.

I myself have never experienced seizure-like symptoms. I also have not found dose increases to cause any new side effects for me, although they do sometimes cause an increase in ones already present. However, everyone is different.

I started having absence siezures when I was about 8 years old. Things like stress, lack of sleep, or caffiene would make the siezures more common. During testing the staff managed to trigger a partial siezure which generalized into a tonic-clonic siezure. It is the only grand mal siezure I have ever had.

I was medicated for years after that and never had another major siezure. At the age of 16 I stopped taking medication and remained siezure free after that. Recently I have been having increased sleeping problems and I have started having an increase in the frequency of myoclonic siezures at night. In any case it means that I have to get off of the meds that are lowering my siezure threshold before I end up with another grand mal siezure.

Stimulants like adderall will lower your siezure threshold. If your son is having siezures, it is a good idea for him to get off of the meds until the doc signals all clear.

You might visit http://www.epilepsy.com as they have very good info on epilepsy, it's forms, and medications, etc....

I suffer from a form of epilepsy that affects me if I treat myself badly -I have had two grand mals in my life - lack of sleep and poor eating habits will trigger it so I am very careful about not having the two happen at the same time or it will be me wriggling on the floor again scaring every one with my eyes turned back into my head

I almost did drinking 2 pots (small 5 cup pot) of coffee with my morning 30 Mgs of salts. I started wiggin out. Rollin my eyes.

So I made my self sick. Drank some pepto benadryl and some Nyquil and was fine when I woke up 4 days later

Wow, this is the first I've heard about Adderall and potential seizure risk. I am on 30mg and have been taking it for almost two years with no serious problems other than manageable side effects.

The scary thing is that back in 2000 I had my first (and only to date) seizure. At the time, I was taking a very high dose of Paxil and a lower dose of Wellbutrin. I had my wisdom teeth removed and the dentist prescribed a pain killer called Ultram. It did almost nothing for the pain and I took significantly more than prescribed (bottle said 2-4 every 4 hours, I took around 8-10 in that timeframe). At some point shortly thereafter I blacked out and my roommate came home and found me shaking violently, foaming at the mouth and completely unresponsive!

Long story short, he called 911, I spent the rest of the afternoon and night in the ER trying to convince them I wasn't attempting suicide! I also learned a valuable lesson about researching drug interactions and possible serious side effects.

Good luck with you son. I know the only thing worse than dealing with your own health issues is those of your kids. I wish you and him the best!

I guess 10mg of adderall is to much. He isn't having seizures, just tremors with some exelerated heart rate, and he can't breath. He also did this when given a cup of coffee so I guess for now we will have to cope with his AD/HD without meds. Thank you so much for your support, and information.

I wondered about that too, my 13-yo son was on Adderall for about 5 months. During that time and for about 6 months later, he was having tons of absence seizures. He's OK now. Nothing ever showed up on the MRI or the EEG.
