View Full Version : Heart Effects: Provigil vs Dex/Adderall/Ritalin
thunderroad 04-29-06, 11:30 AM Has anyone not been able to tolerant stimulants like Adderall, Dexedrine and Ritalin in terms of it stimulating the heart (chest pain, increased heart rate and blood pressure), but been able to tolerate Provigil?
Any comparisons between traditional stimulants in terms of heart stimulation?
Traditional stims make my heart go crazy, and I wonder if Provigil would be more or less likely to do the same. If anyone can relate to this I'd be interested to hear your experiences.
Provigil is not given for ADHD, unless it is off label. The company is looking at this possibility and is seeking it's approval through the FDA.

I realize this, but thank you for responding.
In March 2006 the FDA Psychopharmacologic Drug Panel unanimously voted that Modafinil is an effective treatment for ADHD. However, the ADHD indication was not granted because it was not proven to be "acceptably safe" for use in children. The main issue seems to be a single reported case of the potentially lethal skin condition Stevens-Johnson sydrome. Cephalon has until Aug 22 (2006) to sort this out. If it does, they will market Modafinil under the name "Sparlon".
I have heard that this single case is bogus and that they may get approval after all. Do that many people take it off label? Have you?

I get the impression it is rather popular as far as off-label treatments go--at least in adults. It only seems it will become more so in both adults and children/adolescents if it gets the FDA Ok.
I have not taken it, yet. But I can't tolerate stims so I'm thinking of giving it a shot.
I'd appreciate to hear from anyone who is stimulant (Ritalin, Adderall, Dexedrine)-intolerant but has tried Provigil.

Do you take Atenolol to counter the effects of a stimulant?

Yes. It's to conteract the adverse effects: racing heart, anxiety, etc.

Do you take the atenolol with a traditional stimulant (dex, adderall, ritalin) or Provigil?
Does provigil cause you a racing heart?
apoc_metal 05-17-06, 10:50 AM I'm actually taking Adderall and Provigil at the moment. I only take the Provigil as-needed, to supplement the Adderall if I've been staying up late (the Adderall otherwise just "goes to" waking me up). But anyways, I'm at the moment experiencing some rather unpleasant heart-rushing sensations (that is what I was googling when I found this thread!). I've found it happens whenever I take 100mg Provigil without reducing my normal dose of Adderall (which is 2x20mg XR).
Also, I drank a fair (not that much) amount of caffeine last night (just pulled an all-nighter) and that isn't helping things either. Making it difficult to concentrate on this damn paper (final), to say the least. (Due in an hour and here I am writing a damn forumn post!).
Yeesh.
[edit:] Oh, and I'm taking Wellbutrin as well... 200mg I think. (the big white ones)

I was prescribed Provigil just for my ADHD. I couldn't take it because it made my heart go crazy! I have tried Adderall and couldn't take it because it gave me headaches worse than the migraines I'm used to. Right now I am on Concerta. No heart racing, no headaches, etc. Really no side effects yet except loss of appetite. Not much, but hope this helps.
