View Full Version : Four short ?'s for us all, will be helpful to many if you contribute
kirc0047 05-01-06, 06:44 PM Please fully answer the question, but try to keep it short. Number your 4 answers so they are easier to follow. I will start it off...
1. What is your current dose of Dex per day? Pill or capsule?
2. How long have you been on Dex?
3. What have been the negative side effects?
4. Have the benefits of the medication lessened over time?
Me:
1. 5mgt tablets 3-4x daily
2. 3 weeks (a newbie)
3. Some irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath at times, some sleepless nights, occasional isolated chest pain, slight throat soreness
4. Even after a couple weeks I am noticing a tolerance building. What initially lasted me all day long ends around 4pm now. (I take them all four anytime between 7am and noon). When it works, my concentration is unbelievable - so I will be continuing.
chameleon 05-01-06, 07:17 PM What do you want the answers for? Are you doing research? If so, for what company? Will it be published? Is so where? Please give us more info before asking for our input for your test
kirc0047 05-01-06, 07:48 PM I am new here, so if this seems "reporterish" or something I apologize. Since only starting on Dex 3 weeks ago, I want to see what everyone's experince is like months or years down the line.
chameleon 05-01-06, 08:14 PM Thank you for clarifying Kirc :)

1. What is your current dose of Dex per day? Pill or capsule? 5-6 x 5mg 15mg, then 10mg, then sometimes 5mg in afternoon
2. How long have you been on Dex? about 3-4 months
3. What have been the negative side effects? lack of sleep if I take them after 3.30pm, and hubby says I can be a bit nasty when they wear off. Lack of creativity, less energy, dry mouth
4. Have the benefits of the medication lessened over time? yes, so I increased the dose to suit. The benefits IMO outweigh the negatives though

kirc0047 05-01-06, 10:30 PM I can get quite grumpy when they where off too - easily irritable.
Iwalani8 05-02-06, 05:57 PM 1. What is your current dose of Dex per day? I am prescribed 25 mg a day, 20 in SR capsules and 5 in the tablet, but I've been taking three capsules a day because it works better.
2. How long have you been on Dex? About a year
3. What have been the negative side effects? I just switched to the brand name and since then, I have not had the usual headaches and exhausted/brain dead feeling that the generics gave me.
4. Have the benefits of the medication lessened over time? Yes. Sometimes I don't even know if it is still working for me. BUt I'm so sick of changing my prescriptions...
wheresmykeys 05-03-06, 03:02 PM 1. What is your current dose of Dex per day? Pill or capsule?
10 mg 1x daily. I'm going to try to up it to 15 tomorrow..hopefully 10mg in morn, 5mg later on.
2. How long have you been on Dex?
Just over one month
3. What have been the negative side effects?
At the beginning it made my chest feel lightweight(I dont know if that explains it) and occasional chest pain. I also had a headache when it wore off, and if I haven't taken it for a few days still minorly do. Otherwise I have no negative side effects.
4. Have the benefits of the medication lessened over time?
I started on 5 and found that quickly lessened, after about 1 week. Then I started on 10 and it lessened in the same time frame but not much, it is still very effective.
Bean Delphiki 05-03-06, 08:05 PM 1. What is your current dose of Dex per day? Pill or capsule? Pill, short-acting brand-name. I take 10mgs 2x a day in theory; but I have, when I was busy, taken 15mgs at once, or 10mgs more than twice in a day. (I didn't notice any problems with that.)
2. How long have you been on Dex? Since the beginning of March, but I had a few weeks off it in the middle of that time because I couldn't get my prescription refilled. Hopefully, that won't ever happen again.
3. What have been the negative side effects? In the beginning, I had slight headaches (not even worth pain medication); breathlessness and the sense that my throat was clogged; some trouble sleeping if I took it too late; and major loss of appetite (I lost weight rapidly). I also got the first two issues on Ritalin.
I waited it out, and I believe all of those side effects have gone away. The only continuing effect was some dizziness, but I think that is disappearing too.
4. Have the benefits of the medication lessened over time? Not sure, but I don't think so. I don't think 20mgs a day was high enough to help me at school regardless, so I want to up the dose when I go back. However, it does help my memory at work (I work at Taco Time, and I need to remember orders to call them back to the rail/line workers), which I'm happy about. I also think I "space" less at work. I haven't noticed that benefit disappearing yet. I also noticed a better ability to read books on my meds, which I'm very happy about. :D
I don't take my meds when I have days off specifically because I hope to avoid building a tolerance that way. :( I really would like to have this med keep working. However, when I was taking it while in school, I noticed a tendency to hyperfocus for hours on the wrong things, and I didn't notice that going away at all. (Although it wasn't helpful, at least I know the med had an effect!)
katatak 05-04-06, 10:18 PM Hi ....
1. What is your current dose of Dex per day? Pill or capsule?
combination, tabs during the day, spansule at night.
65 mg during the day, right now I'm taking ti twice a day 7 tabs AM and 6 Tabs late afternoon.
10 mg Spansule at night (it helps me to sleep, keep the multidudinous thoughts quiet at night)
2. How long have you been on Dex?
18 months
3. What have been the negative side effects?
Sexual dysfunction! EEEEUUUCH!!!
Oh! educating the people who telll me its all sugar and food aditives!
4. Have the benefits of the medication lessened over time?
Not at all! Titration was never completed properly because we were looking for second and third opinions. Dosing fo Dexedrine is not well understood and no research that I can find justifies the recomended doses. Nor dose any real researach justify the alleged psychosis.
I have recently found out that psychoisis is NOT caused by amphetamine itself but but the build up of metabolites over time ... and this does not always occur.
1. 5mgt tablets 3-4x daily
2. 3 weeks (a newbie)
Yes, so be patient! ;)
3. Some irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath at times, some sleepless nights, occasional isolated chest pain, slight throat soreness
Those will likely go away after a while, tell your doctor about the chest pain though.
4. Even after a couple weeks I am noticing a tolerance building. What initially lasted me all day long ends around 4pm now. (I take them all four anytime between 7am and noon). When it works, my concentration is unbelievable - so I will be continuing.
Tollerance is not building. You haven't reached tollerance. Tollerance is when you have reached the maximum of what it can do for you. At that point your dose will be stable and you will stay at that amount for a long time. People are stable on one dose for years.
Expect that this period called titration .. when you will have increasing doses to find the one that's best for you will last from 6 to 8 months, perhaps shorter or perhaps longer. Just be patient with it and go slowly. Don't be afraid to take some longer time between increases as the doses get larger.
I have found that the larger doses I am taking last a bit longer.
Some hints here, Don't drink tons of citrus juices, it will make Dexedrine's half life shorter.
Cheers,
Katatak
P.S. Dexedrine makes me ravenously hungry
butterflygirl 07-13-06, 01:10 AM 1. What is your current dose of Dex per day? Pill or capsule?
7.5 mg (1.5 tablets) every 3.5 hrs, 4 per day, and then 10 mg dexedrine spansule for sleep (comes out to 50 mg daily.)
Because I have severe PMS or PMDD as it is called now, I may need to go up to 60 mgs daily during that week. My dr and I are discussing this.
Also, I may actually need 60 mg NOW but 50 is all I can tolerate at the moment. I started out at 12.5 mgs for 3 days and then went to 20 mgs. Two weeks ago, my dr added the night-time slow release dex and this past Mon, he told me to take 7.5-10 mgs 4x daily instead of 5 4x daily. I'm going with the 7.5. I actually did start to feel better for the first time after 8 p.m. tonight.
2. How long have you been on Dex?
Since mid-May... so about two months almost.
3. What have been the negative side effects?
In the beginning (and whenever dose is increased) feel tired and zombie like, have chills and feel cold, dry mouth, very little appetite, very unhappy, yucky. I remember when I started hearing all the criticism that I was taking "rave," and "party" drugs, and wondering how anyone in their right mind could feel good on such an incredibly yucky substance. I called my doc and asked to be taken off it at one point. He said, "sure," but I kept trying because I knew without a doubt I had to give it a chance. My life could not go on the way it was.
By day 4 or 5 after a dose increase, I usually feel better than I ever have in my life. I am a "slow adjuster."
4. Have the benefits of the medication lessened over time?
No. I still feel as though a fog has lifted and I am more "with" reality. I'm under more stress now. Thus, the med increase is necessary. It is certainly more calming, which I need. Dex has helped me cut down on klonopin by more than 1/2 what I was taking. Dex also brought my blood pressure from stage I hypertension down to normal!!! I tend to sleep easily on almost any dosage of dex.. except at night, because I push the limit of letting go of the day, even when I'm very drowsy and exhausted.
Going to bed right now...
ButterflyGirl..
1. 5mg tablets 3-4x daily (2 morning, then 1, and 1 later if needed)
2. 11 years
3. Occasional sleep problems, but not so much now that I have worked out when to take them, and not to. :)
4. No not really.
solitary bee 07-14-06, 01:52 PM started in march 2005. initial dose was 5mg per day, then 5 mg twice per day. the doctor upped the dose to 20 mg per day in divided doses. i told her i didn't really think this is what i needed but she thought it was. so i'm taking it like this and it's alright but when the stuff wears off i feel very tired. if i need to work until past 6 p.m. i take another 5 mg at about 4 p.m. just so i'm not as tired.
since i've got chronic fatigue syndrome as well as ADD, this all helps so i get better sleep at night. i've got more energy during the day than i've had in years.
i find it somewhat ironic that there are people here who have doctors who don't want to increase dosages and in my case it's the doctor who insists that dosage needs to be increased. .....sigh.....
i only take a morning dose on days when i don't work.
two side effects: dry mouth but only when under some sort of pressure. otherwise, not significant. so the response to stress is augmented by the drug. and the fatigue that sets in after a 10mg dose wears off. no fatigue when a 5 mg dose wears off.
