Hi. We have 9 year old who is currently taking meds and doing behavioral therapy. We are considering doing a QEEG with the expectation that bio-feedback training would follow - neither of which are covered by insurance. Does anyone have experience with bio-feedback training - we'd love to hear from anyone who has taken this approach and if there have been successes and to what extent.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums AEFD!:) My counselor went to a workshop to learn about this and said it sounded interesting -- the problem seemed to be that it costs a lot of money and there's a good chance that the improvements won't continue or maintain for long after the biofeedback stops. A friend of mine used biofeedback with his son and got very good results as long as he was using the biofeedback, but after he stopped his results started to fall off. Consistency isn't a strong point of the ADHD brain, especially without constant outside reinforcers. I'd recommend doing some reading first (ie: Taking Charge of ADHD by Russell Barkley; Delivered from Distraction or Driven to Distraction by Hallowell and Ratey (Delivered discusses some alternative treatments). Most authorities don't feel that biofeedback has yet demonstrated the effectiveness and long term maintenancy to make it worth the tremendous outlay of cash involved. If money is no issue, you might give it a try.

Good luck to you!

PS: Both Distraction books are available at most books stores -- other ADHD books can be found at www.addwarehouse.com (http://www.addwarehouse.com). There are also good articles at www.schwablearning.com (http://www.schwablearning.com).
