Hi,
I've taken a break from RItalin before and the last time I did it was last summer, I slowly weaned myself and after a few weeks I completely was off of it. Then in august, school began and I took it at 40mg for a few months then 60mg for about 5 months without any big holiday breaks except a few days here and there. Now, I'm trying so hard to take another summer holiday, I went from 60mg to 30mg the next day(trying to take a holiday), to 20mg for a few days, 15 mg for a day and now nothing for 3 days. I have to take this summer class and since ritalin stopped working towrds the end, my doc prescribe me adderall but I had a bad reaction to it and now I do have some ritalin left over, I don't know how to wean cause i'm feeling real tired, depressed, and just not good. How do you wean yourself and how long does it take for one to feel better. thanks.

Hi Ditzygirl,

What kind of doctor is prescribing your meds? Did he / she tell you to wean yourself off Ritalin? Did your doctor give you any information about dosage?

Hi Ditzygirl,

What kind of doctor is prescribing your meds? Did he / she tell you to wean yourself off Ritalin? Did your doctor give you any information about dosage? No, and I don't want to be a pest becasue I was just prescribed adderall and I flushed them down the toilet because they initiated panic attacks and paranoia and ritalin just gave out on me but DID work so I just need a break so it will work well for my last semester. My doc doesn't know I have extra ritalin from last summer and I dont want to tell him, but I will tell him about the adderall incidient when it's time for a new script.

Ditzygirl, I have three kinds of anti-inflammatory meds that didn't work in a cupboard; they were prescribed and paid for. What I'm concerned with is what appears to be no clear dosing schedule or information about taking your meds. These meds aren't a case of more is better. Just ask Alice what the doormouse said.

And I also wanted to know how anyone "weaned" themselves off of it. Thanks for the info!:)

As far as I know, it is not necessary to "wean" oneself off Ritalin because it is out of your system very quickly. Lots of people miss days of taking Ritalin without any side effects other than an increase in ADHD symptoms.

A word of caution...check with your physician/pharmacist before mixing prescription meds with over the counter supplements.

I know they recommend for children to take medication breaks for the summer and school vacations, but I'm wondering if that's also the protocol for adults? I'm wondering if stability/consistency might be more important in adulthood. also it seems harder for adults to come on and off meds than kids maybe because we become so accustomed to "status quo" that interruptions in routine are harder to adjust to, whereas in childhood, everything is new all at once?

i would assume this is a personal choice - my nerologist is 1005 aware of what i do - not taking my medications on my weekends and taking 5 day breaks every once in a while and he says if it works for me - then by all means do it.

I know they recommend for children to take medication breaks for the summer and school vacationsWould this be a personal choice of the individual physician or has there been new research? ADHD does not take vacation breaks and, if anything, the unstructured time of weekends and vacation are often harder on people with ADHD. Medication isn't just for school.
