I have been on 30mg Adderall XR for approx. 2 years now. In the past 8 months I have developed a very peculiar side effect. My tongue hurts horribly, bad enough that I take frequent vacations. I just got off a 1 month holiday, thinking I could function well enough without. Turns out I couldnt, so I have been back on for 5 days now, and my tongue has been hurting for 3 days.

My mouth is dry (a usually side effect), my tongue hurts kind-of like it has been rubbed raw. It also feels like I have small invisible sores on the very tip of my tongue (more localized pain). Also the middle and back do not hurt, just the sides...like my tongue is too big for my mouth and I have been chewing on it (which I dont think I am doing, unless I am just unaware of it). The insides of my cheeks are also a little swollen as if I have been knawing on them, too.

Only thing that I can think of that has changed is that I also started taking Effexor XR around 8 mo. ago. (I know that it is not the Effexor as I have not stopped that med., but have had many holidays off Adderall.) Wondering if it could be the combination of the two meds.

ANY IDEAS, COMMENTS OR SIMILAR EXPERIENCES would be GREATLY appreciated!!

I've gotten this intermittently before, and for me, it was always that I was chewing ony my tongue and the sides of my mouth in my sleep. Weird, I know, but I woke up a few times and caught myself doing it. I know Adderall makes a lot of people grind their teeth, so maybe it's causing this, too. I'd think your tongue would be even more susceptible to getting rubbed raw in a dry mouth (which I get, too. ugh).

Another couple of things that occur to me is that if you're one of the people who lose their appetite on Adderall, you might not be getting proper nutrition, and your tongue is getting sore because of that (I'm not thinking scurvy, but maybe some other vitamin deficiency?). Along that line, do you know if you have oral herpes? Something like 70 per cent of the population in the U.S. does, and a lot of people don't realize it. It can manifest as cold sores on the outside of your mouth, but also as sore spots inside your mouth, and an outbreak can be triggered by stress or poor nutrition. Taking vitamins and Lysine can keep that from happening.

If you aren't biting your tounge and cheek in your sleep, it could be a stress response of some kind.

When I first started on medications I was so stressed that my tounge swelled up and I had sores inside my mouth. Both my mouth and tongue were sore. It got better after I was on meds for a week or so.
