I need to get cleaning. I'm procrastinating right now, of course!!

This small, but cluttered apartment needs to be clean by Saturday. I have the rest of today open, but . . . . am having a hard time getting started. It's all overwhelming.

I think I should start with the easiest area to clean, but I need to stop procrastinating and get moving.

Does anything help you to move? I find that playing my choice in music, at a fairly loud volume, motivates me significantly. This tends to annoy my family, all but the baby who dances :D and while she occasionally distracts me with her needs I still feel that urge to MOVE...is that what you are looking for? That proverbial kick in the butt feeling? I plan my cleaning around the family members who grow annoyed by firmly stating my NEED for the music and allowing them to help decide when I can in fact use my required tool without recrimination. If they cannot give me that time then they might have to live with the consequences of denying it to me (IE messy house, burnt supper, no clean clothing, etc.). I am only human and ADD to boot, and there only so many hours in the day ya know?
I am certain this method works for me and would not ask if it was not a true necessity. The more boring/irritating the chore, the less motivated I become and the more the music is inclined to help me get my butt in gear.

Cleaning is definitely a boring/irritating task, Crazy~Feet!

Not much gets me to move. I ended up taking my adderall, that's about the only thing that can get me going on this kind of task.

I started cleaning out this closet I have, so I put in a movie I've seen a bizillion times and went through lots of crap.

I'm taking a break now. I have until 6pm!!

Thanks for the suggestion, Crazy~Feet!

You are very welcome :) and I love that you found your motivational tool! Its cool that you find the movie a way to defocus on distractions! I do that with the TV at night to wind down ;). Just goes to show ya all ADDers are people and thus different but we sure can brainstorm if we want to!

Good luck and keep me posted please? I have housecleaning issues too and will remember to check back.

I always have to have some kind of noise going on.

So far . . .

I've cleaned out the closet, and in a more orderly fashion, put boxes in it.
My next job is to clean off the top and under my coffee table.

This place is such a mess. . I really need to figure out how to not let it get this bad. It takes too much time to do big cleanings like this, time I don't have.

That's the rub right there isn't it? How to not let it build up! I have had major problems with that and am hoping I find answers soon. I was the type to KILL myself in a cleaning frenzy, then exhaust myself and sleep too much...as the mess slowly crept back. Lather, rinse, repeat od infinitum. Its not easy is it?

Here of late I am focusing on small steps. Monday is wash the sheets day. If that's all I get done, so be it...I KEPT A SCHEDULE! And yay for me, ya know? It does not come naturally to me one little bit :faint: but I am trying and will keep trying! I will also try not beating myself up while I learn this odious new skill :p.

Someone whose house is in the state of mine has no business offering advice! That of course, won't stop me from doing just that!:p Sometimes having a check list -- I like to see progress -- it helps me keep going. I check off each thing as I go. I like to complete something or I get discouraged, so starting with something doable sometimes helps -- seems to help to build momentum. I also like something on in the background to keep the boredom from totally swallowing me.:faint: Good luck!!!

Yup! My choices to get me cleaning are:
Madonna's Immaculate Collection
The Big Chill soundtrack
Bonnie Raitt's Luck of the Draw

Weird combo huh? You know what is really funny...my daughters have these CD's in their collections...they say they're nostalgic.

Actually, I noticed that you have an Indigo Girls quote in your signature...I sometimes add Swamp Ophelia into the mix.

This place is such a mess. . I really need to figure out how to not let it get this bad. It takes too much time to do big cleanings like this, time I don't have. What do you find that builds up the most? I swear by file cabinets, or they have smaller file boxes. I have folders for everything. Then everything is up, plus if you need to find something, it's a snap. If I have tons of magazines piling up, I read thru them while watching tv, and tear out anything I want to keep: articles, recipes, hints/tips, etc, and put them in a file, then throw the magazine away. I still have a box of magazines I have in the closet to do. I too find the hardest is keeping it clean.

Hope this helps a bit.

I hear you, livinginchaos ... I'm the MAYOR of chaos. And I find that my motivation comes in cycles - I'll go great guns for a few days or even a few weeks - but once the mood has passed, it stays gone for much longer stretches of time. Heaven help me if the mood doesn't coincide with being able to stay home and put it to use! Or if a deadline like the one you're facing looms and the mood doesn't hit.

I do second Ilawani8's post - that's a great book for some quickly-implemented tips that can make a difference fast.

Here of late I am focusing on small steps. Monday is wash the sheets day. If that's all I get done, so be it...I KEPT A SCHEDULE! And yay for me, ya know? Thanks for that reminder, Crazy~Feet ... one of my biggest problems is that when I get all gung-ho to get something done, I make these HUGE, completely unpractical lists of everything I'm going to accomplish in a specific time frame (such as the recent 3-day holiday weekend) and then I beat myself up for not getting to it all, rather than applauding myself for what I did do.

livinginchaos - are you living there alone? One reason I think it's so easy for me to lose motivation and let it get to the disaster stage is that I'm single, no kids, no current boyfriend - so nobody sees it but me. (And I don't encourage drop-in visits AT ALL.) But without a built-in audience, with nobody to care if I let something go "just one more day" it's very easy to let it build to the point where I'm just overwhelmed trying to figure out where to start to get it back to the point where I could apologize for it being a mess.

An interesting idea I saw somewhere - I think maybe FLY Lady - is to kind of treat your future self with the same respect and consideration you would a friend or family member. Like if you wouldn't leave whatever task you're procrastinating on for your mom or your best friend to clean up, what makes you think "future-you" should have to do it? Or if you're telling yourself "I really don't want to wash the dishes tonight, I'll wait until tomorrow morning" - do you really think that it's just right now that you don't want to do them, and somehow you're going to be magically all excited about the same job some other time?

Well, it's easier said in theory than done, as I am a CHRONIC procrastinator - but I try to keep those thoughts in my mind. When they're not being chased out by the million other ADD thoughts that race around in there!

Another trick I've been using, since I have such an abominable sense of time, is to use the timer on my watch to push myself into just doing stuff now - when I think, "Oh, I don't want to go all the way to the garage (my house is 1000 sq. ft.) to fill the dog food dish" and then I time myself and filling both the food and water dishes takes literally less than one minute - I feel kind of silly putting off something so simple and quick.

And if nothing else works - try straight-up bribery. Give yourself 2 points for every item you cross off your list ... when you get to 20 points or whatever arbitrary target you set for yourself, go get Baskin Robbins or a new CD, or whatever treat will serve as the carrot on the stick! That's what I'm doing these days, and I have to admit, I've gotten more done in the past week than I did the entire month or more prior. (Long ways to go still, but small steps like Crazy~Feet said.) I've almost earned a treat!

Aaaanddd, that's why I love these forums - no way I could ever tell my oh-so-together friends that I basically have to bribe myself to wash the dinner dishes!

Now if I could just figure out a way to get insurance to cover the cost of the bribes along with the meds ... can't quite see them reimbursing me for 2 scoops of Daquiri Ice!!!

I clean as stuff bothers me.....different things bother me on different days. I don't know if it is because I am medicated for my ADD or I feel when stuff gets cluttered to a certain extent that my movement is restricted. I can't stand to have to step over stuff.

The coffee table is Gary's and there is enough room for me to put my coffee cup glasses and smokes on..right now I have a stack of mail sitting next to my computer screen and it is beginning to bug me when it does I will go through it and chunk most of it in the trash.

Gary wants me to look at even addvertizement we get......he impulse buys so I place the stuff next to my computer screen, which he knows I take care of eventually and he forgets what is in there and what isn't 98% of the time...So I wait for that moment and throw the ads away....if he actually remembers some thing three days later and asked me about it then I will actually take serious note of it..and decide weather or not it is some thing we need.........most times not....so I actually have a second un-diagnosis untreated ADDer to assist in the clutter making........but both of us are bouncy so when clutter interferes with bouncy then it gets taken care of.

So I am generally motivated by becoming annoyed....or bothered
It is just Gary and I no children......

It is just Gary and I no children......Seems I am functioning the same way lately Tammy. If it bothers me? I am motivated to get it done. If the clutter begins to remind me of my non-medicated mind? Its got to go. I am able to get my ADD child to appreciate that, but hubby is still quite resistent (soooo grateful he on the road right now!!!). And naturally the baby is going generate a certain amount of toy-clutter.
I hate the dishes. I am forced to handwash them and even on my meds, the sound of them clinking and clanking while I wash them hurts my ears. I have to blast tunes to get through it.
But if you show up at my house and I have a load in the sink unwashed? Its not going to faze me anymore either. I have come to the conlusion that scrubbing grout with a toohbrush is just not fullfilling and that "perfectly spotless home" is not a part of my personal value system. Its clean enough for me, nobody is going naked for lack of clean laundry and I washed enough dumb DISHES that I can cook and we can eat and for me? That's enough today. :D

I'm sorry it's taken me a few days to get back to this thread!
Thank you all for the advice! I really appreciate it.

I get a kick out of this cleaning problem of mine because I am a behavior therapist. I've written many successful programs for kids, but have a really hard time doing behavior therapy on myself! It's definitely harder to look at what I'm doing .

Scattered:
I have briefly tried a checklist. I've decided to write myself a behavior program and make a chart. I think it will help a lot.

I'll post this when i'm done so if others want to use it, you're more than welcome!!

Iwanlani8:
It is a great book. I own it and have read it, but I need to re-read it and really implement suggestions.

MIGirl:
I love the idea of more files. The thing that sucks is that I live in a studio apartment and have very little room.

Actually, what builds up the most are my clothes. I hardly have any closet space, so I know that's why. But, it's no excuse for not picking up after myself.

Irish Mermaid:
I live by myself. When I had roommates, I was much better - in the common areas, but my room was a sty. I know that living by myself and living in a studio is not a great thing for me - cleaning-wise.
I've tried the fly-lady, but it's not my cup of tea.

Thanks, again, everyone! I truly appreciate your suggestions.

I got my apartment clean and fairly organized! I decided that in order to attempt to keep it clean I needed to better organize. I had a party on Sunday and I finished cleaning at 2am on Sunday. But, hey! I got it done!

I looked around my apartment and have really noticed that I can relax in a clean apartment. I have a hard time relaxing in a messy, chaotic apartment, plus it's overwhelming.

I'm off to make my program for cleaning! I'll post it when I'm done :)

Sounds like a good plan livinginchaos! I have been thinking about rewarding myself when I accomplish the cleaning goals I set.

I laughed when I saw "vacumn (walls and floor)"...I always forget to look up when I am vacumning...so the walls definitely get neglected.:)

I think this plan will work. I just live in a studio apartment, so I'll put it in a highly visible area to remind me to get stuff done!

My walls get so bad! The walls are concrete and NOT smooth! So I get dust and cobwebs on them.

Rewarding yourself is always a key thing in setting up an objective for yourself (as it is when you set one up for others, as well!). If there isn't a reward the objective isn't going to happen, because it isn't worthwhile, nothing to motivate me.

Once this becomes habit, I'll be able to fade out the reinforcement.

LOL i just think it's so funny that I can set up objectives to change behavior everyday for kids, but I didn't think to design one for me!

The one I made is more informal then the ones I do on a daily basis.
