What kind of PDA do you have? -Palm -PocketPC -Other jimmmaaa 11-03-03, 11:38 PM I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my Dell Axim X5 PocketPC. I had 2 Palm Pilots but looking at what Dell had to offer over the Palm I decided to make the switch. It will more easily integrate with applications I work with a lot, such as Work and Excel. I broke both of my previous Palm Pilots so with the Dell Axim X5 I opted to get the RHINO Aluminum Hard case. It looks like the case will be able to take the abuse of this Bull in a China Shop. Andrew 11-04-03, 12:21 AM I have a Palm Vx, but am starting to look around at others...probably will hold out for a new color Blackberry RIM Pager :D Wheel1975 11-04-03, 07:33 AM Pocket Pc Compac 3630? I hate it. When the carge goes low it forgets EVERYTHING. The "reminders" can't be looked at as a separate list. they pop up or they don't. Did i mention i hate it? jimmmaaa 11-04-03, 11:24 AM So, Wheel, if I'm hearing you right, You HATE IT? I will let you know how I like mine once it comes in. If you get a new one that you like, take the old to someplace such as a canyon or gorge. Once there, set up for a reminder to pop up about 1 or minutes later that says, "Chuck the Compaq 3630 into the Canyon" when it pops up, let it fly. It would be best if can find a place with Rocks down below so you can hear it crash and break apart. If you don't have a canyon or gorge, a sledge hammer will make a good substitute :) Wheel1975 11-04-03, 11:39 AM Yep, say i set reminders for things weeks in advance, days in advance, and hours in advance. Then later, when ready to add another appointment, i turn it on. It tells me tiny snippets, too small to identify all the things. My choice, dismiss or delay 5 minutes, or guess. But all this MUST be done before I can get past to put the new one in. Then I go back to try to find "what popped up?" No can do! It is a reminder system with a memory WORSE than mine, less accessible, less controlable, with fewer options. Oh, an dit increases my frustration, because, I AM A PROGRAMMER AND COULD SO EASILY do it better... except not on here because the programming materials all assume years of prior experience programming PocketPC's. Arrrghh! jimmmaaa 11-04-03, 11:52 AM Wheel, it sounds like you recieved the special PocketPC model that has ADHD. They released a limited number of that model and experts are still investigating what makes it tick. healthwiz 11-04-03, 09:01 PM I have a pocket pc, by viewsonic. Its a descent piece of gadgetry. but it wont let me get GPS so im upgrading to the HP IPAQ 2215 soon. GPS is all i want in life, its a good occupation for a pocket pc, sitting on the dashboard, giving driving instructions, mapping the way for me, so i will not be lost anymore. That costs thousands as an optin in luxery cars, but not so with a pocket pc...a hundred bucks will generally do the job!! go GPS! I'm GPS raving mad crazay~~!! I guess i'll use the other stuff too, but the gps, thats my baby. :) Jon Wheel1975 11-04-03, 11:52 PM Originally posted by jimmmaaa Wheel, it sounds like you recieved the special PocketPC model that has ADHD. I will post a little review of it in the next couple days once I play around with it for a little bit. jimmmaaa 11-12-03, 05:05 PM So far, I think the Dell Axim X5 PocketPC is GREAT! I am in the midst of checking out, but so far I think it is fantastic. It fits in my pocket, the color is great. I am getting all my contacts into it. I will post more about it next week after I have used it more than a just a day. Kiai 11-13-03, 10:26 AM I have a Handspring Treo 300 with Sprint service. i've had Sprint since 1998, and i have no complaints, but i know their service doesn't work so great everywhere. Cingular offers the Treo 270, so do some other services. i love my Treo because it's a PDA and a phone, so it's one less thing to remember! i have a note next to my door to make sure i don't forget that, and i attached a headset to it so that i can talk hands-free, AND it helps me not lose it. not only that, but i can't stand Grafitti, or writing, cause those PDAs, even with that handwriting recognition software, doesn't work for me. so the keypad is just fine. and now the new Treo 600 has been designed for bigger fingers. how's that? unreal33 11-13-03, 12:41 PM I use a Palm Tungsten E, after moving away from my beloved PocketPC. I had a Tungsten T3, but I found myself "playing" with it too much and not using it for its intended purpose -- as an organizational tool. jimmmaaa 11-13-03, 12:52 PM The thing I like about the PocketPC versus the Palm is that it is more fully integrated with Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. So I can reduce the differerent address books I have. I will have to limit the number of games I load, because I can see that can be a time waster. tiggwin 11-15-03, 10:21 PM I had a Handspring Platinum, but i dropped it a mere 12 inches onto my desk, and it never worked again. I had my eyes on a color replacement Pocket PC this time, but my wife gave me her Palm VII since she wasn't using it. I couldn't turn it down since it saved us some jing, (but I really wanted a color pocket pc... waaah waaah). Anyway the Palm works almost exactly the same as the Handspring, but the Palm is incredibley sleek and easy to take anywhere. The Handspring, with it's AAA batteries, was too thick to slip into a shirt pocket or lug around easily in it's bulky leather notebook/carrying case. By the way, if you haven't discovered AvantGo.com yet GO THERE NOW! You get updated news from any of hundreds of news/sports/enterntainment news outlets whenver you hot synch. You don't need an internet connection. Wall Street journal / new york times/Sporting journal/ Golf, whatever. did I mentione it's free??! I highly recommend it! It's a great way to read the sports section while in the can at work without actually being seen doing the Al Bundy-newspaper-under-the-arm-walk-to-the-john. jimmmaaa 11-17-03, 11:16 AM I have not checked out AvantGo.com yet, I have to get over there sometime. waywardclam 11-17-03, 11:22 AM No option for "none"... sigh... jimmmaaa 11-17-03, 11:24 AM Oops! This was my first poll, can't change it now, only a moderator can change it. Hey, you are a moderator. Maybe you could add a none option for me? Andrew 11-17-03, 01:18 PM "None" option has been added :) jimmmaaa 11-17-03, 01:27 PM Thanks Andrew! suleika 11-17-03, 08:00 PM I have a Palm M515, and of course I keep eyeing up the latest Palms but so far I have not succumbed. I got hooked on pocket things in the days of Psion, with a 3a, then a 5. Then a Palm V because Psion weren't going to support USB. How stupid was that? I loved my Psion5. I could type quite well on it. Gez InattentiveType 11-21-03, 10:32 AM I have a palm. Although I never use it. Forget to carry it mostly. Kelly 11-22-03, 10:34 PM I have a Sony Clie NX60, which uses Palm OS. I REALLY like having a full screen and virtual grafitti, but I don't really used the keyboard much. Still love it tho :) One of my projects at work is to research PDA's for my boss and figure out how to get her set up - WOO HOO! My kinda project ;) CNW 400 12-01-03, 10:21 PM I have an HP Jornada PocketPC that my wife gave me for Christmas a couple of years ago. We looked at the different models together and it was between this one and the Compaq model, I decided on the HP. About 6 months later HP & Compaq merged and they decided to keep only the Compaq PocketPC, so within a few months I could no longer get accessories or peripherals. Bummer. I use mine all the time, several times a day. The address book holds all the info I need on contacts from phone numbers to alternate addresses, websites, email etc. more than I could ever fit on paper address books. The calendar reminds me of things I need to do each day, it even got to the point where my boss or my wife would say "Put a note in your mini-computer to remind me about so & so". I can make lists of things I need to pick up the next time I go to the grocery or department store as I think of them. The few times I forgot to bring it with me I almost felt lost, I have come to rely on it so much. TheSisko 12-02-03, 03:21 PM It seems to me that the best device to use is one which helps with our specific needs such as organization and scheduling. Anything else is extra and is a huge distraction. As for the Pocket PC's, i've heard a lot of things about them and to me it seems that they have many extras that are not needed for someone with ADD. As well, if you really know about computers you may find that they are more of a hassle than helpful. I got a Palm T3 and I like it. However, the one problem I have is that the scheduling software is not really built with the ADD person in mind. Too many programs with too many scattered options. If there was a program that could do it all and have many more options that would be great.... Any ideas? jimmmaaa 12-02-03, 05:12 PM I don't have any Ideas. As far as the PocketPC goes, it uses Outlook for the scheduling, so if you use Outlook at work it would be helpful. There are a lot of bells and whistles, but it is better than trying to use paper and it beeps 15 minutes before appointments or tasks and is pretty helpful for me. TheSisko 12-02-03, 05:30 PM The biggest problem I see though like I said is that the actual software does not have enough options. Setting it to remind you 15 minutes before may be good for an appointment but only if you are already doing something that has gotten you near the appointment. Since I am a student, being able to set reminders at different time intervals with different sounds would be much more helpful. I'm not certain of an example for such at the moment but... The greatest difficulty I have with the software is that it doesn't have enough options and that it is actually 3 or 4 programs instead of all integrated into one nice package that works really well. If that was a possibility then I'd like to know where to find such software. jimmmaaa 12-02-03, 05:52 PM Yahoo Reminders work well too. You can set 2 reminders at whatever interval you want and can have it send you email, and to a message to a wireless device. TheSisko 12-02-03, 06:06 PM Well we could discuss this ad-nauseum but suffice it to say that it would be easiest if it was all in one. I am sure many people with ADD would agree because the harder it is to use or the more steps that are involved in doing something, the more likely we are to give up on it after a short period of time. We must learn to help ourselves. jimmmaaa 12-02-03, 06:32 PM Well, that is true. I think whatever system you can cobble together that helps you will. There are people on this board that program, maybe some of them could create an ADD-Friendly organizer software product. I think we can make excueses as well about this or that not working because it is too complicated or does not have this feature that feature or too many features. There comes a time where we all must take responsibility and MAKE a system that DOES work. My thought is you just keep trying in whatever it is until you find what works for you. So I encourage you to keep looking for something that works for you Sisko. ericcumbee2003 12-02-03, 11:15 PM This is my first post but i have a Dell Axim X5 Advanced with Windows Mobile 2003 I Also have Linksys Wifi Card a kodak 128 cf, and 2 128 SD cards I am in college and have been using a pda since the start of my junior year of highschool. jimmmaaa 12-03-03, 10:31 AM Are the SD card easy to you use? How about the price for them? I have the same one as you but the base model, with no WiFi. FlakeyGirl 12-03-03, 10:50 AM Quit Braggin' Eric! Kidding, I'm just jealous because you've got what I want. I'm rockin' the Sharp Wizzard (suh-weeet, lol). DH & I agreed its a trainer. I get the Daddy Dell in six months if I still have the WIZ. I think he's counting on one of three things to happen 1.) I just chuck the POS 2.) I actually lose it 3.) I lose interest in the whole PDA phenomenon ;) TheSisko 12-03-03, 11:03 AM Well I guess you'll have to try and use it regularily so that none of those things happen. I have found that having my PDA in my pocket at all times when I am away from home is the best solution. Any ideas come to mind or appointments etc... and I am able to put them directly in. Much less of a hassle than forgetting about it by the time I find a piece of paper to write it on or loosing the paper by the time I get home or putting the piece of paper in one of my huge piles and loosing it eventually that way. All in all I think that a PDA for those of us with really bad organizations skills will help us in the long run. Especially if we really want to help ourselves. Any other thoughts regarding the use of PDA's for ADD people? ericcumbee2003 12-03-03, 12:37 PM my axim is my only shred of organization in my life. CNW 400 12-03-03, 09:32 PM TheSisko, I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by "all in one". Each ADDult has different needs so it's doubtful a single unit could be developed that would meet the needs of everyone. I'm not saying that a PocketPC is right for everyone, but as Jimmmaaa says, since I am using Microsoft Outlook, I can sync my PocketPC to my home and work computers, giving me a triple advantage when it come to reminders & accessing information. I am not limited to 15 minute reminders but can set a reminder for any number of minutes, hours or even days, and I think it's a lot easier to have the unit come right out and say what it's reminding me of than having different sounds that I would need to learn and remember which sound means what. Plus since I think most people use and are familar with Microsoft office suites (Word, Excel, etc.) so you pretty much hit the ground running with little instruction needed. As for the extras, I just ignore the ones I don't use and they don't hinder me or get in my way. Mark TheSisko 12-03-03, 10:26 PM Yeah I totally understand what you mean. I was just refering to the fact that there are only a few options to select from for setting alarms and it is not the easiest thing to move info around on the palm itself. That part is easiest to do on the computer and then hotsync. BEing able to do things like that on the fly on the palm would be cool. I realise that this may be a pipe dream but I had to mention it anyways. There is however a website that is offering something that may fit this need. It's a planner made for people with ADD. www.ADDPlanner.com ericcumbee2003 12-03-03, 10:47 PM Originally posted by jimmmaaa Are the SD card easy to you use? How about the price for them? Yeah you just plug them into the slot and the axim recognizes them, id stay away from the sandisk cards (something with the SD controler on the Card) i think i got them for 14.95 after rebate from staples, and i got the wifi from compusa for 30 after rebate. Els 12-21-03, 05:21 PM I've got a brand new Palm Tungsten E. It's very pretty and hope it'll help me organizing my life. Paper organizers don't work for me. My handwriting is awful and I used to carry around so much paper it just didn't make sense anymore. steveb 12-28-03, 03:05 PM I got a palm m105 for free a year ago. I would buy their software, but without a physical contact address and a way to check them out with BBB... I'm not doing it. Andi 12-29-03, 10:52 PM I currently use the Kyocera QCP 6035 Smartphone...it's my cell and PDA all wrapped into one. One of many reasons I love it is because it interfaces with my Microsoft Outlook and does a number of other wonderful things. Once it's time to change I'm looking forward to color. Ian 01-02-04, 01:12 AM Now that I've waded through all these fine posts I'm off to begin the shopping.. .. .. daytimer your days are numbered.. heh My daytimer has been a very good friend but it is time for an upgrade.. Where are they located? VisualImagery 01-11-04, 11:09 PM My iPAQ 1935 is named Abby-for the Abby Normal brain in Young Dr. Frankenstein. I have Pocket Informant - PIM manager- and it is my life saver. I can color code my appointment, tasks and other things. The alarm feature is awsome-I don't forget things very often anymore. My paper planners never got used despite good intentions-they just didn't click for me. Now, if i could just have it implanted on my arm for instant access... soc 02-11-04, 08:11 PM I have a new HP iPAQ (one of the 1900-something series). it's one of the cheaper models, but very nice and slim. ericcumbee2003 02-18-04, 12:46 PM yeah the 1900 series is a nice line of handhelds, i held one and it just felt a bit to small for me, where as the axim x5 fits my hands perfectly. that is what i dont like about the hps all of there larger units cost 500 dollars jimmmaaa 02-18-04, 01:01 PM I have had my Axim X5 since mid November, and I love it! ericcumbee2003 02-19-04, 08:56 AM The X5 rocks, but i am afriad it maybe on its way out with the X3 hopefully dell will build an x6 with the new processor, make it a little thiner, with sdio and CF slot jimmmaaa 02-19-04, 11:14 AM Well, as long as it is still supported by Dell I don't care if the X5 is on the way out. It is a good size for me. Some of the PDAs just seem too small an light when I hold them. Mine is even bigger than normal because I have the manly RHINO case! I broke two different Palm Pilots so the hard case is the way to go for me! :) Lexicon 02-21-04, 06:59 PM I've got a Palm Tungsten T3, which is absolutely fabulous, but my fiancee keeps asking me when I'm going to use it for what I bought it for--I'm always playing games and listening to music on it. But I do actually use it for organizing my life, even if not as much as I should be. I'm still working out what it's good for... but it does rock. soberw/adhd 03-03-04, 11:27 PM like it still trying to get real time email, and fix some stuff:) bekindtoedward 03-07-04, 11:58 PM i got tungsten t3 :) steffles 03-11-04, 12:14 AM I have a Palm Zire 71. Yeah, it is a little cheesy for a computer geek like me, but it is really for personal use. I have a Blackberry for work, but I sort of like to keep that turned off when I get home (so no one can email me and expect a reponse!) However, I have been pleased with the performance of both products. shrekrcr 04-14-04, 02:51 AM My new Dell Axim X3 arrived today!!! yeaaaaah.............. It is midnight and I am still playing with it, I am really excited about it helping me out!!!! I will let everyone know. Shrek:D :D :D :D :D prumont 07-31-04, 08:13 PM Mine is a HP IPAQ - it is very ordinary & the most common thing I use it for is playing jawbreaker. My boyfriend got me an HP iPaq 4355 for my birthday (I'd said I wanted a Pocket PC, but realized after I got it that I liked Palm OS better), but I traded it in for the Sony. I'm just sad that they're getting out of the PDA market. What are they thinking? ladytiger 09-08-04, 11:48 PM I recently invested in an Axim x5 (Dude! I got a DELL!) It is pimp. I <3 my PPC. ericcumbee2003 09-08-04, 11:53 PM The X5 Rocks and dude its a dell :D i have nothing but good things to say about the x5, the only thing that i dislike is that dell did not offer an upgrade to wm2003se, but they are coming out with the x50 that is going to be sweet jimmmaaa 09-09-04, 02:06 PM I read somewhere that there is an upgade to WM2003, maybe it is through Microsoft. I can't remember where I read about but if I find the link I will post it here. Check the Microsoft site. The X5 does rock! Especially with the Rhino Skin case I have for it and the WiFi Card I bought for it! ericcumbee2003 09-09-04, 04:03 PM You have to buy directly from the oem in this case dell, each oem has to build a custom version for each device. Dell no longer sells it, and has already announced that they will not offer an upgrade to wm2003se ADDvocacy 10-01-04, 09:39 PM I have a Palm Tungsten E and I think its fantastic! I love the fact that you can colour-code different events in the calendar. Absolutely amazing! Conlaw 10-28-04, 10:05 AM I have a Palm Tungsten E and I didn't know I could color code different events in the calendar. That would be extremely helpful - how do I do that?!?!? Susan exeter 10-28-04, 11:22 PM I guess I'm the only one using a Garmin iQue 3600? It's a great PDA, PalmOS based, with an integrated GPS unit and software. The GPS Is why I bought it in the first place. As long as I have my PDA, I can never get lost anywhere in the US or Canada. :) I find it's made me a lot more productive. I especially like the voice recorder for recording quick notes to transcribe later. krisp 10-31-04, 05:43 PM I have a Palm Tungsten E and I didn't know I could color code different events in the calendar. That would be extremely helpful - how do I do that?!?!? Susan If you're in the Palm Desktop calendar, it will give you the option of assigning each "event" to a category (business, personal, or unfiled). Each of those categories will appear in a different color in your calendar. Other planning programs probably have this option too. BTW, I just got a Tungsten E too, and I'm enjoying it a lot. :) SpinningTop 11-01-04, 02:42 AM I got it about a month ago, and am gradually making the transition from day-planner and a million 'sticky notes' to the PDA. I muddled about w/o the desktop software for a bit, but now that I have it installed, its wonderful. I keep it running on my laptop while working and sync at the start and end of my work session. This way, I'll update tasks, appointments, notes etc while working. Extra bonus is the ability to sync via IR with my laptop so no fiddling with cables (that are rarely there when I need them). Lovely bright screen! Easy to read in any conditions. My hubby has been considering a Treo (650?) - anyone have one of these? If so, what do you think of it? Thanks! krisp 11-01-04, 10:03 AM DH has a Treo 600 (last year's model), and he loves it. He installed Documents to Go on it, and syncs it with his work email. He can read and edit documents for work including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint), send email, and surf the web much better than I can with my little Sprint PCS phone. The 650 is supposed to have a much sharper screen, which will make it even better. They're not cheap, but they are great phones. f_wcomboadhd 11-01-04, 10:59 AM i feel like such a dolt but i bought a palmzire after doing tons of research b/c i thought it would be best given my adhd tendencies! i have always been a planner girl. my beautiful franklin covey organizer was stolen and i was bereft! i had personal thoughts, poems, a whole entire year of planning and photographs. devestation. i can't believe someone broke into my friends' car and chose to take that..but left me my purse. just took that and my lipsticks. (well, my lipsticks were great so i don't blame her) anyway digression is a lifestyle-as in mine- my little cool looking zire is ..where is it? somewhere in my house or my car sitting around. for that panicky time where i happen to realize all of a sudden..oh shi...what? did i have an appointment? and i search frantically for it..hopefully it still has some charge and i find that my appt is next week. sigh of relief. lose it again promptly. i do like pda's but i'm going to buy another paper organizer. i guess i'm a romantic. i love pens and pencils. i love being able to jot things down, and i'm going to be an antique by the time i'm forty-still using paper.... Crash-Dr 11-01-04, 12:27 PM Palm IIIc is the main one I use, but I've also got a PalmIII and a Sharp Mobilon 4600. I like to scribble notes everywhere, but tend to lose them - I figure the expense of a PDA is an incentive not to lose it ;) ...well, it's worked so far! :) (and you can see my PDAs are pretty "old school" ;) ) Regards, -CrashDr f_wcomboadhd 11-01-04, 04:56 PM but i'm a pen snob! its not price i'm concerned about its just the way it feels on certain paper, certain paper requires certain pens for me..and i love mechanical pencils. i'm just picky about that and i can write 'notes' that i really want to write with paper better. i tend to write poems etc..so i just cannot do that via pda. it just seems wrong. if i don't write down immediately what i'm thinking then i'll lose it forever perhaps! i've lost countless great starts to a story etc. songs, poems..b/c i didn't have a scrap o' paper! krisp 11-03-04, 10:19 AM I love pens, too. DH and I both have some ridiculously nice pens. So I will probably never go 100% electronic, even though I love gadgets. The tactile aspect of writing is still a great one. Hillstrom 11-09-04, 02:39 PM Hi! I am a new member of this forum...Hillstrom and I am living in Sweden. I have a Dell Axim X30 and I mostly use programs like Pocket Informant, PIToday2, SPB Time and Vito SoundExplorer. And I think it´s great! ADD Planner sounds great...any more ADD programs like that?:) Stefan alkoz 11-15-04, 03:50 AM Hi, I have a Palm M105 that my wife got me for Christmas a few years ago. I'm finally getting around to using it. It's kind of fat and is uncomfortable to have as a part of my wallet but I'm hoping to develop a system so I can use it more. Has anyone found one that's thin enough to carry as a wallet unit? Al pembroke 11-15-04, 09:40 AM but i'm a pen snob! its not price i'm concerned about its just the way it feels on certain paper, certain paper requires certain pens for me..and i love mechanical pencils. i'm just picky about that and i can write 'notes' that i really want to write with paper better. i tend to write poems etc..so i just cannot do that via pda. it just seems wrong. if i don't write down immediately what i'm thinking then i'll lose it forever perhaps! i've lost countless great starts to a story etc. songs, poems..b/c i didn't have a scrap o' paper! Fellow pen snob here.... I have a fondness for fountain pens. And mechanical pencils. And different colored inks. My phone has a built-in organizer. It isn't very sophisticated, but it works. For everything else I carry a small pad of paper and a small calendar. Although I love gadgets! Maybe one of these days I will get a real pda, but then I'd have to give up the fountain pen.... :) QUICKzAND 11-18-04, 04:20 AM I just bought a Vtech Helio / Laser Pocket 1 for € 15,- not bad as it has popping up reminders with alarm, voice and written memo's and... I can't believe no one mentioned this software before! This is exactly what I was looking for! But I assumed that no software company would bother making it. It's only $30!!!! I'm for sure going to buy it. Does anyone else use it and find it super useful? Also, apparently "All versions of ADD Planner run on Pocket PC 2002 and Pocket PC 2003 PDAs as well." so I'm definitely going to look into getting a Pocket PC. I'm considering this one: http://www.compusmart.com/Product/Default.aspx?SupplierPartNo=612018 (HP iPAQ rz1710) since it's in my price range. or this one: http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/pda?c=ca&cs=CADHS1&l=en&s=dhs (Dell Axim X30). Should it have Bluetooth? Is that really a necessary thing to have? Yeah I totally understand what you mean. I was just referring to the fact that there are only a few options to select from for setting alarms and it is not the easiest thing to move info around on the palm itself. That part is easiest to do on the computer and then hotsync. BEing able to do things like that on the fly on the palm would be cool. I realize that this may be a pipe dream but I had to mention it anyways. There is however a website that is offering something that may fit this need. It's a planner made for people with ADD. www.ADDPlanner.com (http://www.addplanner.com/) ApeMan 05-04-05, 05:59 AM thanks for the tips so far regarding the Dell's. I'm having trouble deciding between the "Dell Axim X30 Handheld 624MHz" and "Dell Axim X30 Handheld 312MHz". Is it worth the extra money for the faster unit? I've been comparing them at: http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/pda?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs But I'm in Canada so I'll likely order from the Dell Canada site: http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/pda?c=ca&cs=CADHS1&l=en&s=dhs which has more expensive prices but they come with: "Microsoft® Streets & Trips!" . Does anyone use that program? For the wireless ones, do you have to subscribe to a service to get Internet? I know my school has many areas with wireless access, so I'm assuming I could use it there, (for free). I'm also really hoping these X30s can run the ADD Planner software that I mentioned in the above post. Can anyone figure out if it can? I'm not familiar with these OS's and which units have which OS... Also, so long as I'm rambling away here... does anyone currently use any journaling software? I really want to make the switch from a paper lab-book to an electronic one, so I can keep track of all my research ideas/notes (I'm a budding young scientist) and be able to search them in the future. I really hate when I forget my brilliant ideas (they don't happen all that often...) and then have to reinvent them later on down the road... So some type of journaling software might do the job here. Of course, I would want it to work on the handheld as well... I found something promising at http://www.portablejournal.com/ but I'm not sure how good it is for my purposes... Ok Thanks for all the tips and info thus far, and thanks in advanced for any answers you can provide. bricktop 05-04-05, 10:04 AM PocketPc, Dell Axim X50 It is a life saver! Oh, If I had to do it over again I would not have spent the extra money for the one that I got because speed is not an issue for me, go with the cheaper one unless their is some feature that the expensive has, that you need. The OS that you are speaking of is Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition which is quite capable for windows  . If a school has wireless network around campus than you should be able to access the internet as long as you have wireless 802.11 xx (xx replaced with some letters, dont worry the letters don't matter for you) built in or in the expansion slot. If you want to utilize this feature make SURE to have 802.11 xx because I know that some of the Axims do not have this. Also you might need to talk to your network administrator for authorization codes so that you can log on to the wireless network and some school you don't need them and can just enjoy reading your email anywhere! P.S. I'll test the ADD planer software on the Axim X50 but I hear there are compatibility differences with the X30 and X50 but usually realating to network cards so this shouldn't be a problem. AltoClariTone 05-04-05, 09:55 PM after the last semester being an organizational disaster, my dad offered to get me a PDA for my birthday. woot! i'm looking at the tungsten E, and tungsten E2. the allure of the E2 is that is has flash memory, so if the battery dies, i don't lose my info. i am TERRIBLE at keeping things recharged.... is the E2 worth the extra 50 bucks? i'm still playing with the idea of a zire.... they're much cheaper. and what i REALLY want is an axim, but they're SO expensive. i just don't know what to choose. i'd like to keep it under 250.... all i'm going to use it for is an MP3 player, and an organizer. i'd REALLY like to have internet capabilities, but that's not a huge deal. bricktop 05-05-05, 02:11 AM I love my axim's wireless but it is an excuse for me to goof off which is something that I do not need. All PDAs are gonna be good for the reason you want, organization. Save money by getting only what you need because eventually being ADD you probably will get bored with it, unless it's not your money ;) . jimmmaaa 05-05-05, 01:17 PM You can get the base Axim for 199(no wireless) and the model up from that for 265 (includes wireless) Here's a link to all the models compared side by side: http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/pda?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs AltoClariTone 05-12-05, 03:35 AM oh man, my Tungsten E2 is on its way.... i can't wait! myside 05-12-05, 10:20 AM I have a Zire 72 and I love it! It doesn't have built in wireless, but you can purchase an 802.11b SDIO card to plug in. I use an application called 'Due Yesterday' to keep track of assignments and grades. The included calendar and e-mail utilities sync with Yahoo which makes it ideal for my needs. All in all it was a good buy. The Tungsten X will be released sometime this month. This machine makes me drool, so it just might be my next PDA. dfac001 05-13-05, 02:10 PM i just ordered the dell axim x50 with wi-fi i know the window mobile 5.0 will be out in this fall...but i can't wait that long...a person with ADD can't wait that long...how am i supposed to remember without a PDA? i haven't talked to anyone before i decided to order...but how does the memory work? will it lose the memory when the battery runs out???? coz i used a really really old palm...and i lost everything when the battery ran out...and didn't remember what to do for that wk... ApeMan 05-13-05, 08:51 PM I see that the Dell Axim X50 416MHz and the X30 624MHz are approximately the same price (on the dell Canada site: http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/pda?c=ca&cs=CADHS1&l=en&s=dhs), and there is currently a sale on the X30s. What are the differences between the X50 & X30? Would you recommend 1 over the other? I've also considered purchasing the X30 312MHz (wireless). I’m sort of jumping between getting the cheaper one, on the assumption that it will be outdated or damaged sooner rather than later...or else spending a little more getting something better which theoretically should last longer... By the way, it appears that I could also purchase a used X30 624MHz on ebay for the same cost as a new 312MHz. It's very hard for me to decide... Any suggestions? Thanks, ApeMan bricktop 05-14-05, 03:52 AM Ok well one of the main feature difference between the X30 @ 624MHz and the X50 @ 416 besides the speed (which most of the time isnt an issue in my experence) is the fact that you can have optional 802.11b with the X30 and none at all with that modle of X50 (416MHz modle). This means that you are not going to be able to connect to wireless networks that you want to with that version of the X50. However the higher modles of the X50 have 802.11b wireless so that is why I chose the one at 520Mhz. If you decide to go with the X30 the same thing applies, the lowest grade modle has no wifi (802.11b) so make sure if that is an issue to go with either of the two modles' two upper grade versions. dfac001 05-14-05, 04:23 PM i actually ordered the refurbished x30 with 624MHz and wifi from the USA dell site...they have 15% off on all refurbished axim...so the price was only 265.07 with tax and shipping...it was really affordable...but then i noticed the window mobile 5 was going to be out this fall...and x30 would not support wm5... so i cancelled that order and went on ebay to get a mid price x50 @520 MHz with wifi for 320 ApeMan 05-14-05, 04:40 PM Thanks guys for all the good info so far. So would you recommend the X50 520MHz over the X30 624MHz? I think I can get either of them on Ebay for roughly the same price. Or actually...the X50 520MHz appears to be slightly cheaper. What would you suggest? By the way, why would it matter if you can upgrade in the future to the wm5 OS? Is there something wrong with wm2003? Also, I hear that the battery life on the X50s is not as good as the X30s. Do you have any experience with this? How long does yours last? I've also seen some comments online about the nice "jog button" on the X30s and this seems to be a major deciding factor between the X30s and X50s. Any comments on this? It's hard for me to know how useful that feature would be... Thanks again, ApeMan dfac001 05-26-05, 11:24 PM Thanks guys for all the good info so far. Irish Mermaid 12-29-06, 02:40 PM I've had an iPAQ 3835 for about 5 years ... it has seriously saved me, especially the ability to sync with my work Outlook so that I always have my schedule, and contact numbers for people at work that I don't put in my personal cell phone. Has come in handy more than once on those all-too-often occasions that I'm running behind. Before, I might not even have remembered I had a meeting, and definitely wouldn't have been able to get in touch with anyone to let them know I was on my way! The biggest problem is remembering to check it at night AND in the morning, since the information that enters my brain before bed "leaks away" somewhere while I'm sleeping and I wake up wondering just why I set the alarm so early! I had last had it when out shopping with my mom, and I went through their car so many times my dad joked that he was going to get up one morning and find it disassembled on the lawn. Sure enough, a week after the new PDA arrived and I was in love with the new features, went to the store with mom, looked down, and there was the old one in the pocket on the door that I had gone through numerous times. But of course I didn't sent the new one back ... <!-- / message --><!-- sig --> Addesso 02-10-08, 05:22 PM I have a Palm TX that I've been using for the past five months. I read David Allen's Getting Things Done (LOVE IT!) and decided that it would be more efficient for me to have something electronic to hold my lists. I considered the iTouch, but it didn't have a note program! Bah. After I did my research, I realized that stand-alone PDAs were becoming super rare. And I really didn't need a phone with it. Seemed kind of expensive just to hold my lists (thankfully I got it used). But it's helped immeasurably to keep everything in one place and organized. A few folks have mentioned paper, pens, and writing: I was a hold out for so long because I was pretty old-fashioned about this as well (love my fountain pen!). For two months after, I kept a separate paper calendar with my lists on the Palm, but I've converted over to using the Palm calendar too: the main reason being that I couldn't find a calendar small enough and with times longer than 6am-7pm. I may end up making my own one day, but the Palm cal is working good for now. Since then, I've started to use the Palm's other functions more, like browsing the web at odd locations when I can grab wi-fi, and using it as a portable photo portfolio when networking. But I still keep a small moleskin and a pen with me at all times. =) Seer-X 03-25-08, 01:54 PM my Palm Treo is officially dead.... it flew off the top of my car the other day and I fear no ammount of duct tape, super glue or voodoo is going to bring it back again this time. :( ustilago 03-25-08, 08:03 PM I bought a Palm m105 with a keyboard and 2 hotsync cradles, from a friend, for $40, 3 years ago. Last year, the raving sociopath at work gave me his old Palm m505 with a cradle. Honestly, I can't live without it. I've got it synced to Outlook 2003 on my laptop and with the Palm desktop on my desktop (dumpster baby. . . Literally assembled from parts I found in a dumpster. . .). I find that if I enter things in my calender immediately, I don't forget them. The audible alarm and vibrate remind me in time (yes, I can change the alarm timing) for most everything I need to do. I got the Palm originally to help keep me organized at work. Now that I've been diagnosed as ADD (predominantly inattentive) I rely on it more than ever to remind me of everything (get out of bed already, feed and clothe the kids, get them to school on time, go to your appointments, get the following items from the grocery store etc. ad nauseum).
