View Full Version : Cell Phones? What carrier jimmmaaa 11-03-03, 11:41 PM What Cell Carrier do you have and what type(brand) of phone do you have? Tara 11-03-03, 11:50 PM I use a prepaid Tracfone http://www.tracfone.com so I don't need to worry about any monthy bills. jimmmaaa 11-03-03, 11:59 PM I love SprintPCS! I have it for work and my wife has it for her personal phone. (Unlimited, Free, mobile to mobile minutes!!) I currently have a Motorola Timeport, it is the successor to the Star Tac. I am very hard on phones. I have had 6 or 7 phones at my current job. One advantage I have is that I am the telecom dude. So when people leave I get the phones turned into me. It is very easy for me to call in and swap my phone to a new one, just like that. In all the phones I have had had, I really think that the color phones are over rated. Sure you can down load cool ringers, but when it really comes down to it, a phone is a phone. The phone I wish I had is the Motorola V60, now that is a cool phone, not color, but I really like it. I really like the clam shell type of phone. My latest phone that died is was a Samsung N400. I thought that phone stuck. Sure it had a speaker phone, but that seems a little goofy. The little flip open part lost a screw and then it was just a matter of time for the little circuit wire that went to the ear piece to break, and it did. I could no long hear unless I used a headset or the beloved speaker phone. So I went back to a phone that I had before, the Motorola Timeport. I actually have three of those spare, so I took the best one that still had the antenna tip. I love these polls by the way. Andrew 11-04-03, 12:19 AM I have 2 phones, both on Verizon. I have a Motorola V60i for personal use, and a Motorola 720e for work. In the Northeast, Verizon is truly the KING of coverage. AT&T never got their stuff together, and have huge gaps in coverage in and around the northeast. Wheel1975 11-04-03, 07:36 AM I had Ameritech analog which I loved. Then Sprint (never worked in 98% of Missouri. AT&T could never get a line out.. they over sold. Southwestern Bell which became Cingular, becasue they had a repair center tha fixed my car kit antena... no one else had any service or repair! I hate digital! It drops out and I can't even GUESS what someone is saying! ferrette1976 11-04-03, 09:44 AM Okay, I guess I am the last person on the planet who doesn't have a cell phone and caller ID. But I don't have these things for a very good reason - bill control! The fewer bills I have, the easier it is to organize, and therefore pay them!:p jimmmaaa 11-04-03, 11:31 AM I can see where you are coming from, ferrette, regarding the bills. My cell phone is a work one and I keep it under the alloted minutes per month. Hey Big, do you like the V60i? Wheel, coverage will imrove with time...what' KKchKKcckchhh, I am Kcccchh, going Kkkkccccchh, through a tunnel, are you still there? Wheel1975 11-04-03, 11:35 AM c_n ___ h___ __ _ow? can you hear me Now? I said: c_n ___ h___ __ _ow? jimmmaaa 11-04-03, 11:37 AM Goooood! Are we commercial/marketing junkies maybe, drones, or what? joanrdtobe 11-04-03, 03:59 PM I got a cell phone from my father for graduation.....Verizon it is......:) jimmmaaa 11-04-03, 04:08 PM Cell phones are great....Except at the movies and church! :) joanrdtobe 11-11-03, 01:34 AM True. I went to the movies the other day....and I had forgotten to turn my cell phone off...and it started ringing in the middle of the movie. I wanted to die of embarrassment.... tiggwin 11-15-03, 11:06 PM I finally broke donw and got one. T-mobile - 19.99 per month! Nokia phone. 500 national weekend minutes, 60 weekday minutes per month. It's still more than i need, but I pay no long distance on my landline, and the convenience is terrific. ericcumbee2003 12-03-03, 12:44 PM LG VX4400 with verizon FlakeyGirl 12-03-03, 01:10 PM Nextel service on Motorola i88. Never had one problem. Radio feature is cool b/c you don't waste your minutes. I have not come close to all the numbers I can store. I have dropped (OK, thrown) the darn thing more than once and it is OK. BTW, the bank was making me mad not the phone. Cell phone bill is not a problem b/c I am on DH's business account & partner (normie) pays those. We have gotten rid of our home phone. The only ppl calling were the shakedown artists and my mother in law. ;) ericcumbee2003 12-03-03, 11:15 PM my cell phone has it but they dont offer the software yet healthwiz 12-28-03, 02:14 AM Nextel on the free incoming call plan. I pay for 400 minutes a month plus free nights and weekends. I get unlimited inbound calling, which results in me using about 3000-5000 minutes per month for the cost of a 400 minute plan. I don't like any of the carriers, but since i need unlimited inbound calling freedom, I use this one. I re-route all my business calls to my cell phone, at no charge. But I don't have these things for a very good reason - bill control! The fewer bills I have, the easier it is to organize, and therefore pay them!:p Try using automatic bill pay services offered by banks, and by Yahoo.com . This has saved me late fees and time of writing bills. I just check on my bill pay service once a week to see what I paid, and I adjust payments that are already scheduled, if a bill is a little higher that expected. Talk about the savings on late fees, and perfection added to my credit report! And the saving of time, headache, worry. I even pay debts this way, like overdue medical bills, i just pay $20/mo, and they leave me alone. I have about 5 or 6 of those from a surgery and i didnt want to go broke paying them, so they all get 20/mo and they dont complain, all automatically from my bank. One of my lenders claimed i did not send him a payment and the penalty would have been rather gigantic, in the thousands if i did not pay per a business legal agreement. I proved to him that i did pay it, because my bank keeps records of when and where they sent things. I think the lender was trying to exercise his right to a 5000 extra payment if a payment was not made, and he wrote me back apologizing and coming up with some excuse. So it pays to use this bill pay service for legal proof that payments were mailed. Jonathan healthwiz 12-28-03, 02:25 AM Originally posted by FlakeyGirl We have gotten rid of our home phone. I switched to cell phone only and cable modem a little over a year ago, and it's been great for the most part (battery dies, ect). Except once I moved I was screwed. I live half way up a mountain and I get the worst reception, if i can get any at all. I really don't wamt to go back to a land line and add the expense, but I can't use my phone when I"m home. I litterally have to go outside and walk around until I get any reception what so ever. Half the time i'm in my pajamas bare foot wandering around my apartment complex. I'm pretty sure my neighbors are scared of me. healthwiz 12-28-03, 04:39 PM haha - just dont go around the apt complex in lingerie! You could get more of a reception than you were looking for! There is a device that supposedly increases your cell phone reception, that you insert in the phone. They are sold on intenet. i don't know if they work. Until then, enjoy your pj parties with the residents!! lol You are too funny Angie! spasepeepole 12-28-03, 04:50 PM yeah, I bought an internal phone thing, it only helps so much. I wear mens pj pants and my trogdor tshirt. My neighbors more than likely think I'm some crazed mental hospital escapee. aforceforgood 12-30-03, 12:27 AM I have ATT, because they offered an unlimited anytime minutes plan. It's a bit pricey, $100+ a month, but at least I know what my bill will be, I never have to worry about going over my limit. And I have free long distance, which is really cool since I have friends and family all over. I have the Ericsson T68is, which I really like for a few reasons, (30 minutes of voice recording time, bluetooth, IR, color screen, small size, incredible battery life, 6 hours talk, 200+standby, and a few other things) and didn't like for a few others- (the headset connection kept loosening up, seemed to be a design flaw, I went through 6 phone exchanges before getting this one, which seems to work, no ability to use a recorded sound as a ringtone, and a messaging "service" that apparently can't be turned off... I will find a way, though, they said the same thing about the internet browsing features, but I mucked around with it until I broke it enough to not get extra monthly charges) I almost returned the one I have now until I found out they wanted to give me a nokia 3560. Which has a lot of cool features, but check epinions.com for why I didn't want it. Plus it's about the size of a small childs' head. Spase, you're right, I was going to offer you one of those celphone antennas, they do work, but if the signal's too weak, there's nothing you can do. Well, I shouldn't say that, there's probably something- call radio shack and ask, they may have something... I had T-mobile for 3 days and the phone didn't work at all- and I tried it like 15 times- in my home until I put that little antenna booster sticker on it. The loophole to my coverage is that it's on the GSM network, which means it's not as fully developed as analog or digital, but it's pretty good, despite having a couple holes here and there that I know about. I guess that's at least one good thing about living in socal. spasepeepole 01-02-04, 02:25 PM My husbands phone gets slightly better reception, we use it alot. He has an unlocked att phone, but it picks up all the different services and doesn't do roaming. I'm pretty sure there is something illegal about that, but I don't really care that much. ;) Lattebon 04-15-04, 09:10 PM It looks like it's been awhile since anybody has posted on this thread . . . So, Here's my two cents tossed into the mix: I have had Verizon fo a few years and have been pleased with the service. It was great when I have traveled to Florida, Colorado, and to Missouri to have my cellphone work without a hitch. apcpapergirl 04-15-04, 09:33 PM My company cell phone provider is Verizon We tried the Nextel cell phone/two-way radio, but had no service in almost ALL areas of the state... only had service when on major Hwy here, once off of it... NO service on phone OR radio. My teenage son's cell phone provider is Cricket... unlimited local calls. And I forget how many long distance minutes. (hmmmm) FightingBoredom 04-15-04, 10:56 PM I've had AT&T for 6 years. And I'm looking for a different carrier! I am amazed at how inconsistent and flaky the signals are for my AT&T service. Lattebon 04-16-04, 07:38 AM <I've had AT&T for 6 years. And I'm looking for a different carrier!> Consumer Reports listed verizon as one on if not the best for what it's worth. FlakeyGirl 04-16-04, 04:03 PM Almost too true to be funny Jon! I won't give her my cell phone number, is that mean-spirited of me? She got my real e-mail address somehow, isn't that enough? APC-I do remember that nextel registered no service all the way through your state on the Major Interstate for heaven's sake. Brianne 04-16-04, 04:19 PM I have a motorla and i use cingular. I have had problems with my motorla though. It doesn't always have the best reseption. Esp at my parents house ( they have alot of trees) My phone is just a year old now but I have taken good care of it and always have had a problem with its reseption. My nokia worked better as far as that goes but everything else is better on my motorla. I am not sure what type of motorola i have though. Conlaw 08-17-04, 09:34 AM US Cellular, a Kyocera phone. In this rural area where towers are few and far between, I found that the Kyocera gave me the best reception. Susan ericcumbee2003 08-17-04, 10:10 AM my problem with verizon is that i can barely get a signal between where i live and douglas, which is where i go to school at KMiller 08-18-04, 05:30 PM I use Alltel. They are punks, and I don't get reception at home; but I get perfect reception at school, so I'm keeping them, I guess. They're pretty bad about getting you to pay though, they make it so any outgoing calls route to them if you're behind on your bill, and any incomings say your service is unavailable. I have a Nokia phone. Go Finland! AntyNet 08-19-04, 09:50 AM I use AT&T. SO I call call all you other AT&T people for free (Not that it matters, I have the highest plan they offer since the phone is constantly stuck to the side of my head). I am damn happy with their service, and it works great 99.9% of the time. -Anty paulbf 08-19-04, 10:08 AM I've got verizon with a motorola. CHose it because the coverage is supposed to be the best but I pretty often get bad reception or this horrible annoying echo effect which is very very very disconcerting. Also on friday afternoons or busy times calls won't come through to me & I'll discover later that I just got a message. This is pretty common. I don't know if other services have these problems but it's kinda crappy pretty often IMO. t-bird 08-19-04, 01:26 PM I've had cingular for a long time, my bill is always the same. I love having rollover minutes because I never go over on my minutes and I on the phone quite a bit. I only pay 32.00 a month. charlie 11-18-04, 10:27 AM Tried most cell phones available in our area Verizon, Cellular (lots of family work for them) Cellular One is the ONLY service we can get @ home. Doesn't matter how good a phone you have if there's no towers nearby. Like Angie we're in a mountain range and 2 miles down the road you can pick up Verizon & Cingular but not here paulbf 11-18-04, 11:35 AM Verizon dissapointed me, I was travelling and am not supposed to get roaming charges inside CA & NV but when I came back into NV it was still roaming, straight through downtown las vegas all the way to barstow. I'm going to have to fight them on the calls I made at that time, I asked them & they couldn't offer an answer. BettyBoop 11-18-04, 11:41 AM I have sprint and the phone is a Sanyo 8200 camera phone and I love it! broK 11-18-04, 03:10 PM nokia 3285-probably pretty outdated by todays standards but it still works great, the screen characters are almost large enough for me to read w/out my glasses (boy, that feels wierd saying that) & as long as it works, why fix it. been with verizon since their airtouch days & really dont have much to complain about. here in the mountians there are areas of no coverage, bugt it seems like darn few compared to what some of my coworkers put up with w/other carriers. used sprint with work a few years ago when living in phoenix, & the connections were the main reason why i chose verizon. customer service w/sprint was alright-every complaint was greeted with more free minutes, but i couldent deal a/dropped calls, mis-connected calls, & frustration. i figured sprint cost our business a lot of business in lost customers. RUBICONCOWBOY 11-20-04, 03:31 AM 1. AT$T sucked real bad ,but good in the mnts some times 2. Cincular was great untill the sierria mnts. 3. West something is my cell now ,pretty good i guess for 30.00 mo AT$T store is only like a 1000ft from my house and the GSM network was so bad that after 29 days took the phone back to them and they said you must call custome no service,so i did and got some person in INDIA that english wasn't a popular language to them. I asked to speak with a person that could fix my bill and that could speak english, after hanging up on me for like 3x's they took the phone back but somehow, the $33.00 pr month bill was $68.00 WTF So Verizon will be my next cell co,with a V60i i hope inautumnforfree 01-01-05, 06:00 PM nextel. motorola i90. service isnt bad. i could get service in most buildings where others can't. the time/date on my phone is based on region, ie when i go out of my time zone, it switches to the current time for me RIGHT AWAY. i get the echo effect sometimes. my first phone wouldnt charge after a while. replaced it and havent had problems. it's a bit chunky. i get 500 minutes a month, unlimited two-way. unlimited nights/weekends/ and national wide longdistance . i dont use the two way at all. my sister uses it all the time. nextel sent her a gift card for some nice store (nordstroms i think). i just cant stand people being able to hear my convo with the twoway features. my mom did get me a very easy number from nextel. :) kreetz 02-07-05, 01:56 PM My wife and I were thinking about switching carriers when our contract with U.S. Cellular expired. My wife called them and asked when the contract ended. After that, we contacted Cingular, and were going to get the new service started, before our current contract with USC expired. We had not idea that porting out our number would also terminate our contract with USC. A few weeks later, we got a bill from USC for $300, for early termination. We were never told that we would be charged $300 for porting out our number. USC charged us, when there was less than a month left on the contract. The claimed that they're records indicate that Tessa was told this, but that is an all lie, had we known that they would charge us $300, we would have never gone through with changing carries, until after the contract had expired. I will never recommend USC to anyone. They overcharge, and don't have Customer Care, as they claim! DO NOT USE THEM!!!! jmntysol 02-21-05, 04:42 PM I used to have an old motorola v120, really cool when I bought it. It had a terrific reception everywhere. But now I´m looking for a new one. does anyone know where to buy one without a cell phone contract? it´s better if it is cheap. see you MozFan 04-01-05, 03:40 AM Not sure if anyone is still checking out this forum but here goes... I have Nextel with a motorola i730. I had Sprint for some time but I went over my minutes a lot and of course had issues paying the bill on time so my service was constantly being shut off with no warning. With Nextel I get free incoming which has really saved me...I can always answer the phone. The two way walkie comes in handy at times with the few people I know with it. I do miss easy txt msg and camera phone with Sprint but now that they own Nextel I'm sure they'll come up with something nice down the road. |
