Hi again,

Thought we had his meds figured out. I guess I spoke too soon!! Was doing great on dexedrine sr 15 mg. but then when going to sleep he started feeling very sad and depressed. Dr. said it is possible thats because it was the downer of the med wearing off so he started him on Adderall as it lasts longer and is smoother(what he says). Ended up moving from 20 mg to 25 then to 30 now. They all made him so talkative. I like to listen but MY god he just never stops, even when you say OK enough about that!! Give him a break SOMETIMES on the weekends and notice the talking slows down but then we have the other problems which is harder to deal with.
I understand these are stimulants and my husband just started on 10mg of Adderall and he says he can focus and get stuff done but does feel a "buzz" like on speeders but not as strong.Felt the 5mg didn't do anything. He doesn't appear to be talking alot but then he is talking now which he didn't do much before with me so its a good thing!!!!:)
My son doesn't say he feels that but his mouth sure shows it!! He says he feels calmer but he did say the dexedrine sr was much better but not the sadness at the end. I found it very difficult to deal with his "hating himself" attitude at bed time and the sadness of him not knowing why he felt so down.
Thanks for letting me vent but what next? We have another appt on the 6th but I don't have alot of faith in his ped. but no others in our area that are taking new patients. They're all too busy cuz there good I guess??!!!lol

That actually can be sign that the dose is to high. I'm not sure if it's a general side effect or not though. I know when we put my son on 36mg of concerta, along with a few other signs that the dose was to high, he was always talking even more then he normally did, and I didn't think that was possible, lol. When we lowered the dose he became more quiet then he normally is. NOrmally he talks non stop anyway.

Of course everyone reacts differently to meds. Just watch for other signs of the dose being to high. Otherwise I'm really not sure. Definitely talk to his ped though. :)

Thanks Ladym,
I thought of that but with the lower dose he said he wasn't as focussed at school and felt it wasn't doing anything but he still seemed to talk alot. He is not normally a chatterbox like this. He also is very shy outside the home so I wonder if he saves up all his talk for when he gets home!!!

Personally, I found that 30 mg of adderal XR at once was too high a dose for me. yes, speeder, babble stuff.
So I take 20 when I get up and another 10 after lunch so I don't lose steam going into the evening.

Is your son taking adderall XR? Have you tried distributing the dose up across the day?
When I do run out of steam, I get foggy and confused and then bummed out if something is bothering me.
I take other meds at night because they help me sleep and I don't like the mental confusion from them. (anti-depressant, mood-stabilizer)

It sounds like he wants to share his new found clarity with someone. Chatter is good, unless it's redundant or just attention-seeking. Might your son be moderately depressed?

I also found that I had to do a lot of research and introspection to present to my internist so I had to guide him with how I felt and what meds I needed. That kind of attitude drives most doctors batty.
Eventually I went to a psychiatrist and she understood my symptoms and reactions to meds much better.

I also had a difficult time with closed practises. Hopefully, you have resources through insurance that will give you recommendations for mental health specialists?

As you've already noticed between the dex and the Adderall, different stimulant medications have different side effects. There are still others he can try.

My *husband* had a similar reaction on Adderall. Yep, a mid-30s adult talking a mile a minute. Only for a while, though - he'd take the pill (Ir or XR, didn't matter), and 15 minutes later start talking about anything, everything, as quickly as he could. That lasted maybe half an hour, and then he was fine for the rest of the day. Interestingly, he didn't notice his own chattiness himself. He was blown away that I could tell him to the minute when he'd taken his Adderall that morning. (Any smaller of a dose gave him a more "normal" half-hour instead of chattering, but the rest of the day the dose seemed too low. )

In short, it just wasn't the right medication for him. That side effect was livable, though. He had his prescription changed to Concerta for different reasons. I guess I expected the Concerta to be the same with the talkativeness, but it wasn't. Seems much smoother an up and down for him. But other people have the opposite reaction and prefer Adderall to Concerta. It's really interesting to me how much different everyone is in their reactions to medications.

I've read about a few people on here who found their Stimulants gave them verbal hyperactivity.
