My son is in the middle of exam week (he's a freshman, just diagnosed but not medicated yet). He has done so well so far....but he has his big French exam tomorrow. When I used to have to "big time" study, I'd go to a fast food restaurant and sit for hours....or a sports bar...or whatever as long as there was lots going on so that I could focus on my stuff and not be distracted answering my phone, doing laundry, etc. Jake is a complete roller coaster FREAK. So.....I took him and his French book to a theme park this afternoon (we have season passes). We sat at a picnic table and reviewed a chapter, then rode a roller coaster (no lines, weekday, perfect weather). Then we moved to another area, studied a while, rode a while. I was amazed that he was able to focus for those study periods with roller coasters literally steps away, but he did. I think the "comfort zone" of the park combined with the instant reward for his breaks made him more willing to work. And I wanted to reward him for his excellent work on other subjects so far. When he suggested it, I was skeptical....but it worked!
