View Full Version : Help finding treatment - adderall loses effectiveness quickly

Each time I change my adderall dosage, it works great for 1-2 weeks, then the distractibility returns. With adderall (currently at 60mgXR once daily) I am able to work on a particular idea for a longer time than before. The problem is that I can't select what idea to work on, or what thought to focus on.

For those of you familiar with Robert Amen's ADD/ADHD subtypes, I identify with Types 2, 3 and 5 very well. These 'types' mean very little to non Amen Psychiatrists, so I am having a hard time in guiding my treatment with the Amen literature.

To top this all off, I seem to be getting essential tremor when I take adderall now (been on it for about 8 months). Any suggestions for treatment options? I've grown so frustrated with everything that I can't seem to focus on my work at all. It almost feels like depression in that I have little desire to work on anything if it isn't a new concept.

Have you have your diagnosis independently confirmed by a psychologist or psyciatrist familiar with ADD? Since you're developing tolerance so rapidly it might be a good idea to check your diagnosis. Anxiety and depression also effect the ability to focus as well as other conditions. What were your childhood symptoms?

I would be concerned about the tremor that is developing -- have you discussed this with your physician?

Take care,

It is hard to say what my symptoms were as a child since I have very poor memory (I am 25). Anxiety is certainly an issue, and perhaps some depression (or overall negative perception of everything). Both of those are also covered in Amen's literature.

What I do remember is constantly having problems carrying out instructions from my parents. Throughout grade school I'd get frequent comments suggesting I was disruptive (too talkative) in class and that I'd not be able to finish high school if I were not able to stay on task.

Almost constant boredom and lack of action for coursework or chores unless a serious deadline was near, such as a final exam on the following day. According to my PDoc, the tremor may have been caused when she tried a whole motherload of drugs about two months ago (Lexapro + Geodon + Adderall + Risperdal) which we have now stopped.

I'm going to see a new PDoc next week and see if I can get better results with a fresh medical perspective.

Sounds like getting a fresh perspective is a good idea -- that was quite a load of medication. I hope you'll be able to find something that works more effectively for you. Have you tried increasing your frequency of exercise? It has been shown to help depression and aid in focusing for up to four hours after exercising.Scattered
