View Full Version : Dexodrine. Should I ask?
Hey everybody,
I was prescribed Adderall recently and it seems to be going pretty well but I would like to give some other medications a try. Before my doctor wrote my prescription he said "There are a couple of medications to treat ADD, Adderall and Ritalin." He gave me 10mg of Adderall IR twice a day to start and said we might consider switching to Adderall XR if I think Adderall is working for me. I am going to ask him on my next visit about trying out Ritalin for a while and see if it works any better for me, just because he had originally mentioned it as a possible treatment. I've read that a lot of people have had good luck with Dexodrine as well but I am worried about bringing it up because I am afraid he will think I am just "drug seeking" which I'm not. I just want to be able to try a few different options before commiting to the first thing that I've tried.
What are your thoughts on this matter? I don't want him to think I have alterior motives and cut me off the meds all together.
Also, if you have had experience with all three of these drugs (Adderall, Ritalin & Dexodrine) can you tell me what worked the best for you and what advantages/disadvantages there are between them?
I appreciate all your help and opions, this site has been the best tool for helping me get through this whole new world.

Matt S. 07-18-06, 10:26 AM Dexedrine worked best for me but the only reason I was able to get my doctor to give me a rx (mine has a similar attitude) for dexedrine is because a) i took it as a child and had the files with "good d-amphetamine responder" written in it and b) i had the jaw grind from ritalin type meds (i.e focalin, concerta, ritalin) and was forced to take it as a kid and adderall is not the same by far... on adderall I was in a perpetual panic attack... if you ask for a different med he'll more than likely do ritalin first and then dexedrine due to dexedrine having the diet pill frenzy as well as the speed freak thing attached to it also plus it is more potent
I started with Ritalin in 1992. After about 6 years of that, and trying many different brands, and generic versions of methylphenidate, I found that it was just too much stimulation for my heart to take. At my suggestion my Dr. tried me on Adderall. In a short time I found Adderall to be too sedating for me. Then we tried Dexedrine, and I was very impressed. After about 5 years of Dexedrine, I became curious about another drug called Desoxyn which I had read online was like a miracle drug for some people with ADD/ADHD. My Dr. had never mentioned Desoxyn as an option because it turned out that he was completely unaware that it even existed, and unfortunately many Dr's are unaware that it does exist. Desoxyn is methamphetamine HCL. It is the most expensive of all the ADD/ADHD drugs, but without a doubt has the least side effects. For some, it is the only thing that really works for them. I stayed on Desoxyn for a few months and then decided that Dexedrine really worked best for me so I switched back to the Dexedrine. After a few more years (last week in fact) I decided to try Desoxyn again. I wish now that I had stayed on the Dexedrine, and will go back on Dexedrine next month. It seems that every few years no matter which of these drugs I am on, I find that I need to break the pattern and try something new, or try something old again just to see if what I think works best actually does.
Do not be afraid to discuss anything at all concerning these drugs with your Dr., or be afraid that you will be looked at as seeking a buzz. The fact is, you have been diagnosed with this dissorder, and these are the drugs that are FDA approved for treating your dissorder. Granted, I would not suggest asking for Desoxyn therapy until you have tried all the other stimulants first like I did. I do not think Desoxyn is appropriate for everyone, and there is a good chance you will find your match in one of the other drugs. However, in time if you find that there is something missing, and you have read enough about how others have found it to work for them after trying all the other stimulants, then perhaps it may be a good idea to talk to your Dr about giving it a try. Just food for thought.

WELL, try aquiring Desoxyn to treat your ADD/HD.
Desoxyn is rated the highest in Remedy finds ADD treatments, and is a very satisfactory treatment for many.
But Psydoc HATE to script it, thanks to it's DEA big brother looking over their shoulder-accounting for every pill-sad.
Thanks

I already have aquired Desoxyn. That is what I am currently taking.
attention 08-06-06, 05:01 AM what dose? I thought you prefered DEX?
What are the differences?
I do prefer Dex, but every few years I like to switch things up. It helps me to ward off any tolerance that I may have to the Dex, and also to re-evaluate what really works best. I know people that switch up twice a year for this same reason.
My dose of Dexedrine was 60 mg a day, but with the Desoxyn I only take 20 mg a day (due to the high cost). I have found though in the past couple of weeks that I actually prefer to take 5 mg of Dexedrine along with 5 mg of Desoxyn at the same time for optimal effect. Even though this is optimal concerning the Desoxyn, the Desoxyn is just too expensive for me as a student, and if I was to take a full dose of Desoxyn like I could if I asked my Dr for it, I would end up paying around $800 a month for 400 of the 5 mg tablets. Desoxyn also has some sedating properties that the Dexedrine never has, which is nice now that school is out, but in a couple of weeks I do not want to feel this sedate. The Dexedrine is much more affordable, as I can get 400 of the 5 mg tablets for about $120.
As far as the differences are concerned, the Desoxyn is somewhat sedating to me like I already stated, but the Desoxyn lacks virtually any other negative side effect. It is the smoothest of them all coming on, and fading off. It is very nice in that respect.

400 Desoxyn monthly!!, thats like 55mgs daily, wow!!
I had read Dex was more 'euphoria' with its potential, but had read that Desoxyn, being methylamphetamine, had a more wide awake feel to, hence why it's the best often in Narcolepsy, where it used to come in.

Thanks
abettersolution 10-12-06, 10:21 AM you're right, many doctors will percieve asking about dexedrine "drug seeking" behavior, due to its high potential for abuse. luckily my doctor tried everything else and nothing worked but dex...i didn't have to ask. i like my doctor...he prefers to prescribe older medicines that have been used for may years and as a bonus, have generics available, which makes them far cheaper. i'm kind of worried about asking my doctor about desoxyn too, though.
i asked him once and he said he's never heard of it, nor had anyone in his practice. oh well. i'll make an appointment and see how it goes. kinda sucks that with all the advances in modern medicine, we're still using addictive meds like amphetamines to treat adhd/add and benzos like xanax and valium to treat anxiety. straterra didn't do crap for me except cost me a butt ton of money.

Its D-methamphetamine, its the same exact chemical as dexedrine only with an extra methyl group attached. This simply means it penetrates the brain blood barrier more efficently. Crystal meth is...well who knows whats in it really...it could be all sorts of horrible stuff.
