ADD & the arts go hand in hand.

I'm so happy!

Anybody else want to share happy news about the career they chose and how it works with their ADD???

If I had to sit in a cubicle all day, I would commit suicide. I'm really happy with the flexibility and creativity of my job, it's great.

I love my job and it works with my ADD because I get to talk alot ;) be in control, every day is different, act like a kid but be an adult, I'm not within 4 walls.

I'm a computer programmer. I've been in a lot of bad situations in the past. Sometimes my job was ridiculously fast-paced; I couldn't sit down and concentrate on one project for 5 minutes without being interrupted by something else. After being interrupted and losing my focus 5+ times in a couple hours, I'd end up getting frustrated and being unproductive for the rest of the day.

Other times, my job involved nothing but mind-numbingly easy tasks. And that was worse. I *hate* doing work that's not challenging or interesting. Every time I'd sit down to do a 15-minute job, I'd constantly think of other interesting things I could be doing instead. I hated those kinds of tasks so much that I'd often put them off for days.

I love my current job. Although I've never told my boss about my personality or ADD or much of anything else, he figured me out almost from day one. As a result, I work on nothing but complicated projects with a lot of weird problems to solve. And he never interrupts me unless it's an absolute emergency. I finally found a place where I fit in. :)

I'm glad to hear that at least a couple of people here have found their niche! ADD can work FOR you if you find the right job, I think.

fasttalkingmom, are you in sales? (you don't have to disclose that info, of course). It sounds like talking a lot, being really active and animated are working out great for you. Awesome!!!

ummagumma, one of my closest friends is a software engineer. He also has worse ADD than I do (probably because he's a guy, for some reason they get it worse, or maybe that's a faulty observation I've made). His job flexibility and his abilities to think creatively make him love his job to pieces ... he's also EXTREMELY analytical ... sounds like you're in the same boat. That's superb, too.

I just wanted to start this thread because I know there's got to be some people out there who got their ADD or ADHD to work FOR them, rather than against them. For example, at my job I need to be creative and industrious, move from task to task quickly, and be able to talk to anyone. All things that I can do well!!! ADHD is not a curse for me, after all.

Keep looking, guys, good jobs for ADD'ers are totally out there!!! On the flip side, I have to say that I MUST keep a calendar and have a great friend for an editor, otherwise I'm screwed!!!! Royally!

Hugs to all,
Clueless
