I am on 36mg for OCD and fatigue and ADD. Concerta along with Zoloft has been a lifesaver for me. Wish I had this when I was a kid! I suffered thru school because I had anxiety and would obsess over everything. Now, I see my son in myself. :(
My 7yr old started on Concerta in the fall, 18mg for ADD. I felt he was doing wonderfully, even less obsessive. One thing I didn't like was that it made him very quiet and not assertive at all. We originally tried Strattera and he was even worse on that.
On the Concerta, he missed a dose once in awhile with no problem. But, then he missed a weekend and was out of control. I mean raging and violent. So we tried to never miss a dose. Then he did miss a dose one day and the next day took one. The day after that, he was so out of control. Physically hurting himself, trying to hurt me and my dh, his siblings, verbally abusive, etc. He was NOT like this before the concerta and not like this on the concerta.
I kept him on it till school ended and talked to the pediatrician about getting him off of it. I don't like feeling scared if he misses a dose. And his behaviour is very scary when that happens. Ped. said fine, but get him in with a psych.
Pediatrician gave an rx for Ritalin and said to wean with that. I gave it to him one day and 2hrs later he was a complete zombie. Came home and slept for hours. Slept for hours the next day too. Today was the 3rd day w/o concerta or ritalin. He is hyper and nasty, but not hurting himself. We are hoping he will be so busy with fun summer activities, he won't have a chance to.
Is this normal behaviour? I have tried repeatedly to get him in with a psych, but they are all booked. I have calls in again and will put a 2nd call in this week for someone. (We live in a small town and there's not alot of ped. psychs around. Ped. even has a call in)
Has anyone seen this happen before? Is this normal? Will he level off and go back to the way he was pre-concerta?
